  • Potential utility of 14 candidate housekeeping genes as normalization reference for RT-qPCR analysis with developmental samples (fertilized eggs to late veliger larvae) in Pacific abalone Haliotis discus hannai was evaluated using four different statistical algorithms (geNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper and comparative ΔCT method). Different algorithms identified different genes as the best candidates, and geometric mean-based final ranking from the most to the least stable expression was as follow: RPL5, RPL4, RPS18, RPL8, RPL7, UBE2, RPL7A, GAPDH, RPL36, PPIB, EF1A, ACTB and B-TU. The findings were further validated via relative quantification of metallothionein (MT) transcripts using the stable and unstable reference genes, and expression levels of MT were greatly influenced according to the choice of reference genes. In overall, our data suggest that RPL5 and RPS18, either singly or in combination, are appropriate for normalizing gene expression in developmental samples of this abalone species, whereas ACTB, B-TU and EF1A are less stable and not recommended. In addition, our findings propose that standard deviations in geometric ranking as well as geometric mean itself should also be taken into account for the final selection of reference gene(s). This study could be a useful basis to facilitate the generation of accurate and reliable RT-qPCR data with developmental samples in this abalone species.

  • A higher penetration of renewable energy sources and adoption of renewable portfolio standard(RPS), the penetration of distributed generators(DGs) into power distribution network is becoming a threat for the safe operation of distribution network. The ground fault current of DGs can cause parasitic trip and mal-trip of protective device in the power distribution network. KEPRI has developed a simulation program for current setting of protective devices in DGs connected distribution network. In this study, we analyzed fault currents of a sample network in two cases, i.e. case 1 is for no DG connection, case 2 for a DG connection. We performed protection coordination for relays installed in the network and analyzed the contribution of a DG.

  • Purpose: Reduced port surgery (RPS) for gastric cancer has been frequently reported in distal gastrectomies but rarely in total gastrectomies. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of 3-port totally laparoscopic total gastrectomy (TLTG) with overlapping esophagojejunal (EJ) anastomosis. Materials and Methods: A total of 81 patients who underwent curative TLTG for gastric cancer (36 and 45 patients with 3-port and 5-port TLTG, respectively) were evaluated. All 3-port TLTG procedures were performed with the same method as 5-port TLTG, including EJ anastomosis with the intracorporeal overlap method using a linear stapler, except for the number of ports and assistants. Short-term outcomes, including the number of lymph nodes (LNs) harvested by station and postoperative complications, were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Clinical characteristics were not significantly different among the groups, except that the 3-port TLTG group was younger and had a lower rate of pulmonary comorbidity. There were no cases of open conversion or additional port placement. All operative details and the number of harvested LNs did not differ between the groups, but the rate of suprapancreatic LN harvest was higher in the 3-port TLTG group. No significant differences were observed in the overall complication rates between the 2 groups. Conclusions: Three-port TLTG with overlapping EJ anastomoses using a linear stapler is a feasible RPS procedure for total gastrectomy to treat gastric cancer.

  • Phytophthora root rot (PRR) is a major soybean disease caused by an oomycete, Phytophthora sojae. PRR can be severe in poorly drained fields or wet soils. The disease management primarily relies on resistance genes called Rps (resistance to P. sojae). This study aimed to identify resistance loci associated with resistance to P. sojae isolate 40468 in Daepung × CheonAl recombinant inbred line (RIL) population. CheonAl is resistant to the isolate, while Daepung is generally susceptible. We genotyped the parents and RIL population via high-throughput single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping and constructed a set of genetic maps. The presence or absence of resistance to P. sojae was evaluated via hypocotyl inoculation technique, and phenotypic distribution fit to a ratio of 1:1 (R:S) (χ2 = 0.57, p = 0.75), indicating single gene mediated inheritance. Single-marker association and the linkage analysis identified a highly significant genomic region of 55.9~56.4 megabase pairs on chromosome 18 that explained ~98% of phenotypic variance. Many previous studies have reported several Rps genes in this region, and also it contains nine genes that are annotated to code leucine-rich repeat or serine/threonine kinase within the approximate 500 kilobase pairs interval based on the reference genome database. CheonAl is the first domestic soybean genotype characterized for resistance against P. sojae isolate 40468. Therefore, CheonAl could be a valuable genetic source for breeding resistance to P. sojae.

  • This paper conducted an analysis of economic effects of offshore wind power in Korea with benefit/cost analysis. The existing feed-on tariff, which was too low to support wind power development, was recently replaced with a Renewable Portfolio Standard(RPS), effective from 2012. According to the new regulatory policy, The Korean government has announced a strategy to draw investments worth for offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 2.5 GW over the next eight years, which is expected the change of cost and benefit. After overview the offshore wind power development status, The effects on cost can be divided by economic, environmental and social factors. Each factor will be calculated and combined by both evaluating index and using Quantification methods. At the end, the implication for the evaluation of feasibility of offshore wind power of Korea will be done.

  • A Renewable Portfolio Standard(RPS) is a regulation that requires the increased generation of energy from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, fuel cell, small hydro, biomass and geothermal. By environmental, technical and these regulatory reasons, the amount of renewable energy sources will be increased in a network. However, it is hard to assess risk of a transmission network with large scale renewable energy sources because the output characteristics of renewable energies are intermittent. This paper evaluates effects of a transmission system with supplemental large scale renewable energies into the existing system. To evaluate these effects, a methodology for risk level of components in a network is proposed considering steady state and contingency N-1 in this paper. We consider line current and bus voltage in each state of a network.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient architecture for 2D IWT using an existing 1D IWT. Lifting based IWT is the architecture of which a multiplier is replaced by adders and shift registers. The structure is relatively simple and modular. The proposed architecture to process an image size with 256x256 pixels consists of 16 adders, 8 shift registers, and some memories. By processing two rows at the same time, 2D sub-band coefficients can be calculated immediately after 1D sub-band coefficients have been processed. The architecture is designed so that each image can be inputted consecutively. The number of adders and shift registers is increased by twice comparing the existing architecture, but the memory size and the execution time are decreased by half. The proposed architecture is implemented using Verilog-HDL and simulated using iSim. It is synthesized and demonstrated at ISE for xc5vlx330 in RPS3K board.

  • Due to its inherent feature of high-resolution satellite, there is strong need in some specific area to minimize the processing time required to get a standard image on hand from downlink signal acquisition. However, in general image processing system, it takes considerable time to get image data up to certain level from raw data acquisition because the huge amount of data is dealt sequentially as input data. This paper introduces the high-speed image processing system which generates the image data only for the area selected by user. To achieve the high speed performance, this system includes Quick Look Image display function with sampling, ROI selection function, Image Line Index function, and Distributed processing function. The developed RPS was applied to KOMPSAT-2 320Mbps downlink channel and its effectiveness was successfully demonstrated. This feature to provide the image product very quickly is expected to promote the application of high resolution satellite image.
