  • The shock tunnel as a hypersonic ground test facility was designed, constructed and its performance test was conducted to reproduce the high speed flow which the hypersonic propulsion system is encountered. The design points were understood and the conceptual design was completed using the quasi one dimensional operation analysis code. After that, the specific performance and compartment design were completed using CFD simulation as the part analysis. The facility was then constructed according to those design results and the performance test was conducted for various operation conditions. In this paper, we suggested the design method of hypersonic shock tunnel including the conceptual and performance design using theoretical analysis and the quasi 1D Multi-species computational fluid dynamics code.

  • The various hazards should be eliminated before operations for the successful launches or tests. Using the contaminated propellants is one of the causes for the launch and test failures. Especially, the systems using liquid oxygen as an oxidizer have risks about fires and explosions not be forecasted if they are contaminated by oil, water and mechanical impurities. The procedure for the quality control of the liquid oxygen and the liquid oxygen filling system and the lessons learned from the first launch preparation with the system are introduced on this paper.

  • Cold flow and ignition tests were performed for a technology demonstration model of a 75-tonf thrust chamber which is a candidate liquid rocket engine for a next Korea Space Launch Vehicle. The test facility was modified to support the new concepts of the thrust chamber such as ignition system, film cooling and LOx leading supply. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the supply pipelines, thrust chamber and igniter as well as the filling time of the propellants were obtained through the cold flow tests on the LOx and kerosene and the ignition cyclogram was determined using the results. The ignition test was successfully accomplished according to the cyclogram and therefore, a basic information was obtained for further hot firing tests.

  • Cooling characteristics of a liner were investigated by a film cooling method using a gas nitrogen in a rocket engine. High temperature gas of this test was made by mixing liquid nitrogen with combustion gas of a liquid rocket. A supply system of gas nitrogen was additionally constructed to the existing test facility of liquid rocket engine, and a new test section consisted of a liner and a gas injection ring was manufactured. A 10 second firing test for finding cooling characteristics of the liner was successfully conducted and liner surface temperatures and hot gas temperature was obtained.

  • As part of the commercialization research of small gas turbine engines, starting and normal operation control logic research of small gas turbine engine was conducted. It was investigated how the igniter, starting motor and fuel pump/valve are controlled during the ignition and normal operation process and it was applied to the prototype engine control unit(ECU) of the small gas turbine engine for commercialization research. Based on the ground test results, an ECU for flight test is being developed, and after completion of the development, an altitude test will be performed through an altitude test facility of Korea Aerospace Research Institute.

  • In Korea, study of monopropellant thruster have been started from 1990s by KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). 5N hydrazine thruster that is a first Koreanized hydrazine thruster, have been used as flight model for several satellite. In parallel, in order to retain core technology for monopropellant thruster, catalyst and test facility development have been carried out and successfully completed. On the basis of these technology, KARI is performing development of 1N/200N hydrazine thruster and basic research of green propellant thruster.

  • The method of decreasing the ecological risk for the LRE(Liquid Rocket Engine) test is developed, working on the cryogenic oxidizer and the high-boiling fuel(Kerosene). This Method is based on the study that contains a technical solution method and an accident occurrence range for decreasing of accident probability and damage. This paper contains schematic on the all risk circumstance bring to accident, block-diagram for an accident growth process in case of the propellant leakage, evaluation method of safety distance from test stand to residential area. It will be used to alternative method for the risk reduction of complex technical systems.

  • The supersonic wind tunnel is a common facility to studies the aerodynamic phenomenon around the high speed vehicle or weapon system whose operating speed is greater than sonic speed. In this study, a design procedure and selecting the components of a new supersonic wind tunnel whose nozzle exit is $125mm{\times}100mm$ is considered. An operating test of this wind tunnel is being conducted to compare the result with the design values, mach number, etc.

  • Firing tests have been carried out for a technology demonstration model of 75-tonf-class combustor which is to be used on the liquid rocket engine of a Korean space launch vehicle. Firing tests were done at 50% of the nominal flow rate because of incapability of the test facility and limit of the test bed strength. Through the low pressure firing tests of 75-tonf-class channel cooling thrust chamber, operability and stability at the ignition and combustion phases were confirmed. Additionally it was foreseen that the 75-tonf-class thrust chamber would satisfy the performance requirements.
