  • In the Taguchi parameter design, the product-array approach using orthogonal arrays is mainly used. However, it often requires an excessive number of experiments. An alternative approach, which is called the combined-array approach, was suggested by Welch et. al. (1990) and studied by others. In these studies, only single response variable was considered. We propose how to simultaneously optimize multiple responses when there are correlations among responses, and when we use the combined-array approach to assign control and noise factors.

Robust Design using Desirability Function to the Combined-Array with Multiple Quality Characteristics

  • Robust design is an approach to reducing performance variation of quality characteristic values in quality engineering. Taguchi has an idea that mean and variation are handled simultaneously to reduce the expected loss in products and processes. In the Taguchi parameter design, the product-array approach using orthogonal arrays is mainly used. However, it often requires an excessive number of experiments. An alternative approach, which is called the combined-array approach, was studied. In these studies, only single quality characteristic (or response) was considered. In this paper we propose how to simultaneously optimize for multiple quality characteristics (or multiresponse) using desirability function when we used the combined-array approach to assign control and noise factors.

Product array approach which is used in the Taguchi parameter design has a number of advantages by considering the noise factor. Taguchi has an idea that mean and variation are handled simultaneously to reduce the expected loss in products and processes. Taguchi has used the signal-to-noise ratio (SN) to achieve the appropriate set of operating conditions where variability around target is low in the Taguchi parameter design. Many Statisticians criticize the Taguchi techniques of analysis, particularly those based on the SN. In this paper we propose a substantially simpler optimization procedure for robust design using desirability function without resorting to SN.

  • 다구찌가 제안한 파라미터설계에서 사용되는 교차배열은 제어인자뿐만 아니라 잡음인자를 동시에 고려한 획기적인 방법으로 많은 장점이 있다. 반면 단점으로는 지나치게 많은 실험수를 필요로 하는 점이다. 실험수를 줄이기 위한 방안으로 통합배열 방법론이 제시되었다. 또 다른 단점으로 다구찌는 최적조건을 찾는데 있어서 신호대 잡음비를 사용하였는데 신호대 잡음비를 사용함에 따라 여러 가지 문제가 발생하였다. 본 논문에서는 파라미터설계에서의 단점을 개선하고자 신호대 잡음비에 의존하지 않으면서도 실험수를 줄이기 위한 대체방안을 제안하고자 한다. 아울러 파라미터설계에서 사용되는 교차배열과 실험수를 줄인 통합배열 두 가지 사례를 들어 비교 연구하고자 한다.

  • In this paper, a new approach for systolic array realizing the discrete cosine transform (DCT) based on discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of an input sequence is presented. The proposed array is based on a simple modified DFT(MDFT) version of the Goertzel algorithm combined with Kung's approach and is proved perfectly. This array requires N cells, one multiplier and takes N clock cycles to produce a complete N-point DCT and also is able to process a continuous stream of data sequences. We have analyzed the output signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) and designed the circuit level layout of one-PE chip. The array coefficients are static adn thus stored-product ROM's can be used in place of multipliers to limit cost as eliminate errors due to coefficients quantization.

Efficient Global Optimization of Periodic Plasmonic Nanoslit Array Based on Quality Factor Analysis

  • An efficient global optimization approach for a periodic plasmonic nanoslit array based on extraordinary optical transmission within an acceptable time range is proposed using 𝚀 factor analysis method. The particle swarm optimization is employed as a global optimization tool. The figure of merit is defined as a product of transmission peak value and 𝚀 factor. The design variables are the slit width, height, and period of the slit array, respectively. The optical properties such as transmission spectrum and bandwidth are calculated rigorously using the finite element method.

  • A study to analyze and solve inherent problems of a pilot cola machine has been presented in this paper. The product considered in this study involves at least 16 variables(factors) which simultaneously affect the product performance. For this multi-variate statistical problem, we first carefully examined their relationships and selected four variables considered as the most important. We have taken Taguchi's parameter design approach, specifically the $L_8\:(2^7)$ orthogonal array, and determined the optimal levels of the selected variables through the analysis of the experimental results. Finally, we conclude this study with providing general comments drawn from the analysis and verification experiments.

Taguchi has dealt with having constraints on both the mean and variability of a characteristic (the dual response problem) by combining information on both mean and variability into an SN. Many Statisticians criticize the Taguchi techniques of analysis, particularly those based on the SN. In this paper we propose a substantially simpler optimization procedure for robust design to solve the dual response problems without resorting to SN. Two examples illustrate this procedure. in the two different experimental design(product array, combined array) approaches.

  • The reliability of the product can be improved by making the product less sensitive to noises. Especially, it Is important to make products robust against various noise factors encountered in production and field environments. In this paper, the phenomenon of degradation assumes a simple random coefficient degradation model to present analysis procedures of degradation data for robust experimental design. To alleviate weak points of previous studies, such as Taguchi's, Wasserman's, and pseudo failure time methods, novel techniques for analysis of degradation data using the cross array that regards amount of degradation as a dynamic characteristic for time are proposed. Analysis approach for degradation data using robust experimental design are classified by assumptions on parametric or nonparametric degradation rate(or slope). Also, a simulation study demonstrates the superiority of proposed methods over some previous works.
