An Improvement Parallel to the Efficiency of Boost Converter for Power Factor Correction (PFC용 부스트 컨버터의 병렬화에 의한 효율 개선)

  • A new technique for improving the efficiency of single-phase high-frequency boost converter is proposed. This converter includes an additional low-frequency boost converter which is connected to the main high-frequency switching device in parallel. The additional converter is controlled at lower frequency. Most of the current flows in the low-frequency switch and so, high-frequency switching loss is greatly reduced accordingly Both switching device are controlled by a simple method; each controller consists of a one-shot multivibrator, a comparator and an AND gate. The converter works cooperatively in high efficiency and acts as if it were a conventional high-frequency boost converter with one switching device. The proposed method is verified by simulation. This paper describes the converter configuration and design, and discusses the steady-state performance concerning the switching loss reduction and efficiency improvement.

  • Today, rapid development and timeliness of introducing a new product be- comes a more influencing factor of determing its competitive power due to a shortened product cycle, while rapid improvement of manufacturing technology makes product design and manufacturing fuse together. This implies that prod- uct usability evaluation and improvement starts right from its design phase, resulting in less development time and cost. To make this possible, proper as- sessment of human reach is one of essential functions for ergonomic product us- ability evaluation, specifically in the platform of computer-aided ergonomic evaluation models or any CAD system with a built-in man model. In this study, an analytic reach prediction algorithm ensuring the posture that human naturally takes, is presented by employing the methods developed for robot kinematics. Among robot kinematic methods for solving the multi-link system, the resolved motion method was found to be effective to solve human reach as a redundant manipulator model. Also, the joint range availability was used as a performance fonction to guarantee human naturalness. The result is expected to be directly applicable to product usability evaluations.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the impact of engine load on the emission characteristics of excavator engines, with the aim of improving the method for calculating the emission inventory of construction machinery. The engine load in excavators is directly correlated with the operational workload, and variations in the load factor (LF) can significantly influence the emission inventory. Thus, on-board diagnostic (OBD) data from an excavator at a construction site were systematically collected to measure engine output and emissions. The results revealed discernible differences in emissions based on engine load, even when the average excavator engine performance remained constant. This highlights the significant influence of the type and characteristics of the work being carried out on emission characteristics. Making realistic adjustments to the LF used in emission calculation formulas emerges as a crucial strategy for environmental improvement. Moreover, the analysis of the effects of engine load on emissions from excavators provides valuable insights for enhancing environmental protection measures.

  • This paper presents a study of the partial circulating current type cycloconverter with a resonant circuit for induction heating. A method of input power factor improvement is proposed. Since the circulating currents flow through the circulating current reactors, the out-put currents are continuous and sinusoid. The proposed cycloconverter can keep the displacement factor at 1.0 by PWM control method regardless of load. The control functions are derived, the operational principles are described and the simulation and experimental results are presented.

  • Modern vehicles require a high degree of refinement including good driveability. Vehicle driveability, which becomes a key decisive factor f3r marketability, is affected by many parameters such as engine control and the dynamic characteristics in drive lines. Therefore engine and drive train characteristics should be considered to achieve a well balanced vehicle response simultaneously. This paper describes experimental procedures which have been developed to measure engine torque and investigate shuffle characteristics. To analyze the vehicle dynamic behavior, fractional torques and inertia mass moment of engine, and drive train were measured. Shuffle characteristics during tip-in condition were investigated in an experimental vehicle at 2nd and 3rd gear stages. It was found that the shuffle characteristics were caused by sudden changes of engine torque and have a different vibration frequency with gear stage variation. Inertia mass moment of engine including flywheel rotation showed a key factor for the shuffle characteristics.

  • A high-performance PWM technique in current-controlled AC to DC converter is introduced. This converter used information about source voltage vectors to make good PWM switching pattern that it can control the DC output voltage with reduced ripple factor and rapid response. In addition to reduction of harmonic current, AC input power factor can be controlled to leading or lagging by current reference. Simulation was made based on analytical approach and it showed a good agreement with theory.

Bayesian analysis of a repairable system subject to overhauls with bounded failure intensity

  • This paper deals with the Bayesian analysis of the failure data of a repairable mechanical system subject to minimal repairs and periodic overhauls. The effect of overhauls on the reliability of the system is modeled by a proportional age reduction model and the failure process between two successive overhauls is assumed to be 2-parameter Engelhardt-Bain process (2-EBP). Power Law Process (PLP) model has a disadvantage which 2-EBP can overcome. On the basis of the observed data and of a number of suitable prior densities, point and interval estimation of model parameters, as well as quantities of relevant interest are found. Also hypothesis tests on the effectiveness of performed overhauls have been developed using Bayes factor. Sensitivity analysis of improvement parameter is carried out. Finally, a numerical application is used to illustrate the proposed method.

Analysis of Electrical Characteristics of CCFL Exit Light (CCFL유도등의 전기적 특성 분석)

  • Purpose: In this study, since the operation principle of the CCFL Exit light is the same as that of general lighting equipment, the characteristics of the CCFL Exit light were analyzed by deriving test items that can affect the characteristics of the light source from the KS standard, which is the standard for lamp ballast performance certification of general lighting equipment. Method: The samples used in the experiment were performed on products of two manufacturers for each size, such as large, medium, and small, and the test items were power factor, crest factor, and current harmonic distortion. Result: As a result of the experiment, the power factor showed a value between 0.4 and 0.6 in all samples, which was smaller than the 0.9 value set by KS. The crest factor ranged from 3.6 to 3.7 for large, 4.4 to 4.7 for medium, and 3.5 to 3.7 for small. It showed a value more than two times higher than the KS standard of 1.7. Current total harmonic distortion ranged from 81% to 110%, and considering that the KS standard was less than 20%, it could be confirmed that all samples had a value significantly exceeding the KS standard. Conclusion: The crest factor and current total harmonic distortion may affect the temperature rise of the light source and the burnout of the device. When developing an exit light, if this item is developed within the scope of the KS standard, the quality improvement and maintenance of the exit light will be greatly improved.
