Abamectin 1.8% EC and emamectin benzoate 2.15% were evaluated the simultaneous control effect of both insect pests on black pine (Pinus thunbergii) against Thecodiplosis japonensis and Matsucoccus thunbergianae. Abamectin 1.8% EC was highly effective against T. japonensis and M thunbergianae, however, emamectin benzoate was highly effective against only M. thunbergianae when abamectin and emamectin benzoate were applied through trunk injection against T. japonensis and M thunbergianae at the rate of 1 ml per cm in diameter of breast height. The rate of gall formation of T. japonensis was 0% at the applied year, but 85% at the following year. However, the rate of gall formation was over 90% at the treatment of emamectin benzoate showing no difference compared with control. Abamectin 1.8% EC and emamectin benzoate 2.15% showed high control efficacy representing 89.1% and 91.4% against M. thunbergiana, respectively.
The pine wilt disease is one of the most serious forest diseases that kill the pine trees, and the study on the invasion and movement of the pine wood nematode within the tree is very important for understanding the inhabitation of pine wood nematode. In this relation, the microscopic observation was carried out to study the place of inhabitation and movement of pine wood nematode within the infested wood. In result, the rays were mainly infested by pine wood nematode and showed dark discoloration due to their necrosis in cross, radial and tangential surface. Also, the intensive damage was found in the resin canals. On the other hand, some traumatic resin canals in tangential band were identified in the sapwood near the cambium. In the ray, the pine wood nematode occurred more commonly in the ray parenchyma cell and fusiform ray with horizontal resin canal than in the ray tracheid and uniseriate ray without horizontal resin canal, respectively. The pine wood nematode was thought to move from ray to tracheid through the large natural opening, window-like pit, in the cross-field, neither through the small natural opening, bordered pit, in the tracheid nor through the tracheid wall by creating a bore hole.
Pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, causes pine wilt disease in a number of Pinus species, which is one of the most serious plant diseases in forest, Korea. In the course of a search for nematicidal substances from endophytic fungi, Fusarium oxysporum EF119 out of the 23 fungal strains tested showed the strongest activity to B. xylophilus. Two nematicidal substances were isolated and identified as bikaverin and fusaric acid. Fusaric acid showed somewhat higher nematicidal activity against B. xylophilus than bikaverin; fusaric acid and bikaverin, at $100{\mu}g/ml$, killed B. xylophilus with mortality values of 50% and 43%, respectively. In addition, both compounds acted synergistically. This is the first report on the nematicidal activity of bikaverin and fusaric acid.
In this study, carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) inputs by the litterfall of Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa Endlicher) planted in pine wilt disease-disturbed forests were determined. The study sites were located in Sacheon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. Eight plots under two regeneration sites (DR: four plots of C. obtusa planted under slightly disturbed Pinus thunbergii stands; CR: four plots of C. obtusa planted following the clear-cutting of severely disturbed pine stands) were established to collect litterfall from December 2018 to December 2019. The growth of diameter at breast height (DBH) was significantly higher in the CR treatment (12.10 cm) than that in the DR treatment (9.42 cm). C and N concentrations and the C/N ratio in C. obtusa leaf litter did not differ significantly between the two regeneration treatments, but the C/N ratio was significantly lower in the leaf litter collected in October (93) relative to that collected in December (143). The C concentration of litterfall components was significantly higher in C. obtusa leaf litter and in P. thunbergii needle litter than in broadleaved and miscellaneous litter, whereas the N concentration in broadleaved and miscellaneous litter was significantly higher than that in the leaf litter of C. obtusa and in branch litter. Thus, the C/N ratio was significantly higher in C. obtusa leaf litter and branch litter compared with that in miscellaneous and broadleaved litter. Respective C and N inputs by leaf litter were 773 kg C ha-1 yr-1 and 6.95 kg N ha-1 yr-1 for the CR treatments, and 78 kg C ha-1 yr-1 and 0.70 kg N ha-1 yr-1 for the DR treatment. Total C and N inputs were higher for the DR treatment (3,765 kg C ha-1 yr-1 and 47.6 kg N ha-1 yr-1, respectively) than for the CR treatment (1,290 kg C ha-1 yr-1 and 17.2 kg N ha-1 yr-1, respectively). These results indicate that, for C. obtusa, the DBH growth in the CR treatment was superior to that in the DR treatment, but the C and N inputs by litterfall were considerably reduced in CR treatments.
As the pine wilt disease spread rapidly over Korea in recent, aerial pesticide spraying to the infected pine stands increased abruptly. The increasing aerial pesticide application for control of the disease would result in disturbance of soil ecosystem in pine stands. This study was conducted to assess the disturbance, using field experiment in pine stands of Hongleong experimental forests in Seoul with BACI experimental design with three sprayed plots and three unsprayed plots of $25m^2$. We sprayed fenitrothion of 0.0335 kg a.i./ha over each of the sprayed plots, being the same as the pesticide residues of litters after aerial spraying. The pesticide had been applied on 4 June, 11 June, and 29 June in 2002, comparable with the dates of the aerial spraying in the previous year in Busan. We monitored population of soil organisms including arthropods, fungi, bacteria, and actinomycetes at two sampling days before pesticide application, at two sampling days during the application season, and at three sampling days after last application for two months since late May in 2002. The pesticide applications did not make any significant effect on the population of arthropods, fungi, bacteria, and actinomycetes in soils and on the structure of soil organism community, showing low probability of significant effects of the aerial pesticide application on soil organisms in pine stands.
This study was aimed to clarify the morphological and ecological characteristics of Dolichomitus cephalotes and Dolichomitus curticornis in order to provide basic data to be used for biological control against Monochamus saltuarius. D. cephalotes and D. curticornis are univioltine in the central region of Korea and overwinters as larval stage inside the cocoon. Both species are ectoparasitoid, and a solitary parasitoid. D. cephalotes adults are emerged from the beginning of April to the middle of May, while D. curticornis adults are emerged from late April to mid-May.

This study was performed to investigate the escape of pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, from two vector species (Monochamus alternatus and M. saltuarius) through oviposition and feeding behavior. First, we checked number of PWNs escaped from M. alternatus emerged from three different cases of pine logs. In case A, healthy pine trees were cut into logs and left in pine forest infected with PWN. In case B, healthy pine trees were cut into logs, left in large screen cage, and let them oviposited by M. alternatus emerged from pine trees infested with PWN. In case C, pine trees which were harboring M. alternatus were cut into logs, and PWN was inoculated artificially. The M. alternatus adults emerged from the above three cases of pine logs were checked in the next year to know how many PWN they were harboring in their bodies. The percentages of M. alternatus harboring PWN (18.3 and 15.6%, respectively) and number of nematodes per vector ($5,713.1{\pm}9,248.3$ and $2,034.1{\pm}4,746.8$ PWNs, respectively) in case A and B logs are similar to each other. However, the percentage and the number in case C (38.3% and $20,083.1{\pm}32,188.3$ PWNs) were higher than those of case A and B. Among 52 M. alternatus adults harboring PWN from all the three cases, 20 adults (38.5%) were harboring more than 5,000 PWNs per beetle. And these 20 adults were harboring 97.9% of the total PWNs in 52 adults. Second, we checked the daily escape of PWNs from M. alternatus and M. saltuarius collected at pine forest infested with PWN. The PWN escaped from their vector body for $34.9{\pm}12.4$ days for M. alternatus, and for $23.9{\pm}16.2$ days for M. saltuarius, reaching at peak escape during the 2nd week of emergence of the two vector species. A 44.5 and 47.2% to the total PWNs escaped from vector body within 2 weeks of vector emergence for M. alternatus and M. saltuarius, respectively. The number of PWNs escaped from each vector was $3,570.6{\pm}5,189.2$ and $1,556.2{\pm}1,710.3$ for M. alternatus and M. saltuarius, respectively.
The pine sawyer, Monochamus saltuarius Gebler (Colepotera: Cerambycidae) was newly known as a vector of pinewood nematode causing the pine wilt disease in Korean white pine (P. koraiensis Siebold & Zucc.) forestry. Recently, it has a serious problem to spread fast and widely throughout Korea by transferring M. saltuarius. For the control of M. saltuarius, this study was investigated the attractants by analyzing from the Korean white pine. Major components of Korean white pine was analyzed as $\alpha$-pinene and ethanol, and reported as an attractant against Monochamus genus. Ipsenol and ipsdienol, the pheromones of Ips genus known as attractant components of woodboring beetles, were tested to the attractive efficacy against Monochamus saltuarius. The attractive efficacy showed 67.9% of Ipsenol plus ipsdienol and ipsenol, ipsdienol mixed with $\alpha$-pinene plus ethanol was showed 67.7% and 79.3%, respectively. Especially, ipsdienol with $\alpha$-pinene and ethanol was shown the high synergy effect, and the attractant effect was higher at M. saltuarius female than male.

Thirty-two actinomycetes isolates from Korean forest soil were screened for their nematicidal and reproduction suppression activity against pine wood nematode (PWN) which is widely spread in Korea. Culture filterates of 21 isolates showed more than 90% mortality at 2-fold concentration. Among them, AM210, SG16, YD116 and YD315 were more effective than others on reproduction of PWN. The YD116 isolate was identified as Streptomyces atratus by morphological and 16S rDNA analyses. Hydrazine hydrate, similar to hydrazidomycin which has cytotoxicity among substances from S. atratus against PWN, was tested for its nematicidal activity. Ten ppm of the hydrate showed 60.8% mortality. Additional studies are needed for practical use of the S. atratus YD116 isolate.
