The Dark Side of Emotional Involvement in Software Development: A Behavioral Economics Perspective

  • Research on information systems and software engineering has often neglected behavioral effects, which may play a role in decision making on software development. The current study addresses this issue by empirically investigating the behavioral roots of over-requirement in the context of a software development project via an experiment. The negative phenomenon of over-requirement refers to specifying a software system beyond the actual needs of the customer or the market, which overload the system with unneeded features. The research question addressed here is whether over-requirement is due in part to the emotional involvement of developers with the software features they developed because of behavioral effects. Previous studies have demonstrated that under the endowment, I-designed-it-myself, and IKEA effects, people become emotionally involved and overvalue physical items that they respectively possess, self-design, or self-create. The findings of our experiment show that participants over-valued features they were assigned to be responsible for, to specify, or to construct, thereby confirming that the three behavioral effects play a role in software development decisions and affect over-requirement. Thus, the study contributes to software development research and practice from the behavioral economics perspective, highlighting the roots of over-requirement.

The Forecasting of Market Size and Additional Requirement of Technical Manpower in Korean Engineering Industry (우리나라 엔지니어링산업의 시장전망과 기술인력 필요공급량 추정에 관한 연구)

  • The engineering industry plays an important role for national competitive, since it has an high impact on other industries. With its importance, the engineering industry development largely depends on its technical manpower ather than capital factor. This study aims at estimating the additional requirement on technical manpower based on the forecasted market size which represents the structure change corresponding to economic growth in related industry. Research scope includes the twelve of fifteen field except three with insufficient historical data and technical manpower above bachelor degree. Specialty, we forecast market size with determinants resulted from historical data analysis on each field. The demand on technical manpower is derived from the forecasted market. We also estimate an additional requirement with the supply analysis. The research results show different patterns over time period. The relative ratio on chemical and construction to total market will steadily grow over short term, while applied, environment, electronic and information will rapidly grow This pattern will be stabilized over mid or long term. The additional requirement on technical manpower represents the similar pattern to market growth. The research result implies manpower policy for having high inflow of technical engineer from educational institute and the related industries through the image improvement.

  • Requirement engineering is being highly required for developing a new system nowadays because systems become more and more complex. System engineers require clear and distinct user requirement to avoid mistakes taking placing and mitigate the risks such over cost, schedule delay, and performance degradation during system engineering activities. The exact requirement elicitation make it possible to develop a systems to meet users need. In this paper, we presented a process and methodology to develop requirement for application to Automatic Train Control System. In the methodology and process presentation. we presented a key words to elicit requirement and showed how to analyse and validate the given requirement for ATC system.

  • IB (immersed boundary) method is one of the prominent tool in computational fluid dynamics for the analysis of flows over complex geometries. The IB technique simplyfies the solution procedure by eliminating the requirement of complex body fitted grids and it is also superior in terms of memory requirement. In this study we have developed numerical code (FOTRAN) for the analysis of 2D flow over a cylinder using IB technique. The code is validated by comparing the wake lengths and separation angles given by Guo et. al. We employed fractional-step procedure for solving the Navier-Stokes equations governing the flow and discrete forcing IB technique for imposing boundary conditions. Also we have developed a 3D code for the backward-facing-step flow and flow over a sphere. The reattachment length in backward-facing-step flow was compared with the one given by Nie and Armaly, which has proven the validity of our code.

  • Software requirement analysis is necessary for successful software development project. Specially, incomplete requirement is the most influential causes of software project failure. Incomplete requirement can bring late delay and over budget because of the misunderstanding and ambiguous criteria for project validation. Software requirement patterns can help writing more complete requirement. These can be a reference model and standards when author writing or validating software requirement. Furthermore, when a novice writes the software scenario, the requirement patterns can be one of the guideline. In this paper proposes an automatic approach to identifying software scenario patterns from various software scenarios. In this paper, we gathered 83 scenarios from eight industrial systems, and show how to extract 54 scenario patterns and how to find omitted action of the scenario using extracted patterns for the feasibility of the approach.

Performance of VoIP Traffics over MANETs under DDoS Intrusions (DDoS 침해가 있는 MANET에서 VoIP 트래픽의 성능)

  • In this paper, Transmission performance over MANET(Mobile Ad-hoc Networks) under DDoS Intrusions is evaluated. Intrusion counterplan requirement, which have to be used for MANET under DDoS intrusions, is suggested through this evaluation. VoIP simulator based on NS-2 network simulator is used for performance measurement. MOS, network delay, packet loss rate and call connection rate is measured with this simulation. Finally, requirement of intrusion continuing time shorter then 10 seconds is suggested for VoIP service over MANETs under DDoS intrusions.

A Study on the Functional Requirement Analysis for the Development of PDM System (제품정보관리 시스템 개발을 위한 기능 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Presented in this study is a top-down functional requirement analysis procedure and the desired functionalities for PDM system development, and the benefits of top-down approach over a conventional bottom-up approach is also shown. For the purpose of top-down requirement analysis for PDM system, this study proposes 4P modeling view. 4P modeling view is defined as a modeling perspective for classifying functional requirements and integrating product-related information objects that must be man-aged within PDM systems. Based on 4P modeling templates, benchmarking analysis of commercially major PDM products is conducted and as a result of this analysis, this study suggests desired functionalities for PDM system.

The dietary requirement for threonine in juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus)

  • This study was conducted to determine dietary threonine (Thr) requirement for juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). A total of 450 juvenile fish (23.2 ± 0.4 g) were randomly distributed to 18 tanks (215 L) with 25 fish per tank. Experimental diets included with graded levels of Thr at 0.0%, 0.4%, 0.8%, 1.2%, 1.6%, and 2.0% were assigned for triplicate groups of fish and fed two times daily to apparent satiation for 12 weeks. Weight gain, specific growth rate, feed intake, feed utilization and survival were significantly (p < 0.05) increased in fish fed with dietary Thr levels over 0.8%, and no significant differences were observed between 0.8% to 2.3% levels. Non-specific immune parameters of serum lysozyme, myeloperoxidase activity, antiprotease activity, and total immunoglobulin were significantly increased by dietary Thr over 0.8%. Based on the broken-line regression analysis, the Thr requirement for the optimum growth and immune response in olive flounder is likely to be 1.03% in the diet.

Pronunciation of Sonorant Clusters in English for Korean Speakers: A Constraint-based Approach

  • This paper discusses why Korean speakers have problems in pronouncing some medial sonorant clusters in English. We argue that the main reasons lie in the sonority sequence requirement difference between the two languages. English does not have any specific sonority sequence preference between the medial sonorant sequences while Korean has a strict requirement between the two sonorants over a syllable boundary. This sonority sequence requirement difference between the two languages acts as an interference for Korean speakers in learning English pronunciation. This barrier for Korean speakers in acquiring correct pronunciation is implemented in a constraint ranking difference in the Optimality Theory, which is not familiar for Korean speakers. Understanding the details of sonorant production mechanisms along with the different constraint ranking will facilitate the learning process of Korean speakers learning English.

  • In the connection of green frame, the bottom rebar of the precast concrete beam needs joint or anchorage to ensure structural integrity. However, given the characteristics of composite precast concrete joint, enough length over which rebar can be anchored or lap-spliced is not secured. In addition, due to issues with constructability, cost or quality, it is difficult to apply welding or mechanical connection techniques. Therefore, this study analyze the requirement for a bolt-type rebar coupler as a solution for the coupling issue between the lower rebars of green frame beam. The requirement for bolt-type rebar coupler proposed herein will provide basic data for development studies of the rebar coupler.
