The characteristics of extra-nasopharyngeal angiofibromas tend to be different from angiofibromas of the nasopharynx according to patient gender, patient age, prevalence, affected site, pathogenesis, and clinical and epidemiological features. We report a case of an extra-nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in a 28-year-old man referred to the ENT Clinic for right-sided epistaxis, airflow impairment and nasal swelling. The right nostril was completely occluded works by a reddish-yellow mass that bled easily. The computed tomography scan revealed an "inhomogeneous solid lesion in the nasal fossa". With the patient under general anesthesia, the formation in the anterior portion of the right side of the nasal septum was removed up to its vascular base. Although electrical cauterization efficiently controlled the bleeding, we abraded the sub-perichondral area to prevent further bleeding as well as recurrence. The histological exam report confirmed the diagnosis of angiofibroma. As in our case, epistaxis is commonly the presenting sign of angiofibroma. Yet its onset was peculiar, given that the bleeding started with a low impact trauma. The nasal swelling was also a relevant feature as well as the breathing impairment. Although uncommon, nasal septal angiofibromas should considered in patients with epistaxis.

Introduction: Fibrous-osseous lesions of the jaws are difficult to diagnose precisely until excised biopsy results are found, so they might be confused with malignant lesions. This clinical study focused on the diagnostic aids of lesions that demonstrate different clinical, radiologic, and histological findings. Materials and Methods: A total of 16 patients with benign fibrous-osseous lesions on the jaws (6 fibrous dysplasias, 6 ossifying fibromas, 3 cemental dysplasias, and one osteoblastoma) were reviewed. Nine patients with malignant fibrous-osseous lesions (8 osteosarcomas and one Ewing's sarcoma) were also retrospectively reviewed. Results: Osteosarcoma patients complained of facial swelling and tooth mobility. The radiographic findings showed the irregular resorption of cortical bone and periosteal reactions. Histological features included cellular pleomorphism and atypical mitosis. An Ewing's sarcoma patient complained of tooth mobility and facial swelling. Onion-skin appearance and irregular expansile marginal bony radiolucency were seen in the radiography. Fibrous dysplasia patients complained of facial swelling and asymmetry. The radiographic features were mostly ground-glass radiopacity. Histological findings showed a bony trabeculae pattern surrounded by fibrous ground substances. Ossifying fibroma patients complained of buccal swelling and jaw pains, showing expanded cortical radiolucent lesions with a radiopaque margin. Histological findings were revealed as cellular fibrous stroma with immature woven bones. In cemental dysplasia, most of their lesions were found in a routine dental exam. Well-circumscribed radiopaque lesions were observed in the radiography, and cementum-like ossicles with fibrous stroma were seen in the microscopy. An osteoblastoma patient complained of jaw pain and facial swelling. Radiographic findings were mottled, dense radiopacity with osteolytic margin. Trabeculae of the osteoid with a vascular network and numerous osteoblasts with woven bone were predominantly found in the microscopy. Conclusion: Our study showed similar results as other studies. We suggest the clinical parameters of diagnosis and treatment for malignant and benign fibrous-osseous lesions of the jaws.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the incidence, location and morphology of antral septa using radiographic exam.(Panorama, CT) in the dentate/non-atrophic and edentulous/atrophic maxillary segments. Material & methods: 232 sinuses were subdivided into two groups(group1 : 175 sinuses were classified as complete & partial dentate maxillary segments, group2 : 57 sinuses were classified as complete edentulous maxillary segments) and were investigated for the incidence, location and morphology of maxillary sinus septa. Results: A total of 80 septa were observed in 232 maxillary sinuses, which corresponded to 30.65% of the sinuses(71 of 232). 67.5% of the total septa was observed in the complete & partial dentate groups, but 32.5% of the total septa was observed in the complete edentulous group. Upon analysis of the anatomical location of the septa, it was seen that 14 septa(17.5%) were located in the P1 area, 15 septa(18.7%) were located in the P2 area, 19 septa(23.8%) were located in the M1 area and 32 septa(40%) were located in the M2 area & dista area of M2. we found 45 septa in the apical lesion of teeth, Group 1. However the remaining 9 septa were found in the edentulous area. Conclusion: CT is a better method than panoramic radiography for detecting the presence of the maxillary sinus septa. Maxillary sinus septa are more commonly detected in complete edentulous maxillary segments than in complete & partial dentate maxillary segments. Also maxillary sinus septa are more commonly detected posteriorly than anteriorly.
This study analyzed the oral status after recording the images by using QLF-D with targets of 38 youth people with hearing impairment and hearing language impairment. In order to investigate the state of oral hygiene, plaque index (O'Leary index) and contents of investigation of the state of the teeth included the number of sound teeth, the number of caries teeth, dental caries experience and the number of filling teeth. The following results were obtained. First, women lacked the management on plaque and had more caries teeth compared with men. In terms of impairment classification, subjects with both hearing and language impairment lacked the management on plaque and had more caries teeth. Second, subjects who did not get an oral exam for one year had more caries teeth. Oral hygiene score was the highest with the brushing time for 3-4 minutes. The number of sound teeth was increased as the brushing time was increased. In addition, the oral hygiene management time was the highest when cleaning the teeth, gums and tongue at the same time. Third, it was shown that the satisfaction of oral health education by using the new equipment was high. As a result of this study, in order to improve the oral health level of impaired students, they shall be trained to manage their teeth by themselves and educated to increase their motivation and practice. Thus, it is thought that various approaches which are differentiated from existing methods are required to be tried.
This research collected the curriculum for Dental Technology from a total of 20 schools-eighteen 3-year colleges and two 4-year colleges all in Korea. We divided 4 groups as regions from 20 colleges, and we compared the credit of university students who finished all the required courses and want to apply for a national examination and the credit to be had from another educational institution. As a result of this analysis, we get the conclusion below: 1. In the curriculum, average credit are shown like this order: Science of Dental materials 5.45 Orthodontics Technology 4.10 Dental Morphology 3.80 Oral Anatomy 3.05 Dental Health Science 2.45 Public Health Science 2.40 These show that the credit of fundamental studies, which is in order to take Dental Prosthetics, is increased. 2. In the curriculum, average credit are shown like this order: Crown and Bridge Technology 7.25 Removable Partial Dentures Technology 6.55 Complete Dentures Technology 6.40 Dental Ceramics 4.95 Inlay Technology 2.30 3. In the curriculum, average credit are shown like this order: Crown and Bridge Technology(Lab) 5.90 Removable Partial Dentures Technology(Lab) 5.35 Complete Dentures Technology(Lab) 5.30 Dental Ceramics(Lab) 4.35 Average points between regions in the subject of a national written exam are mostly similar, but the deviation among Science of Dental Materials, Crown and Bridge Technology, Removable Partial Dentures Technology, and Complete Dentures Technology is large. And in the practical technique exam, the deviation among Crown and Bridge Technology(Lab), Removable Partial Dentures Technology(Lab), and Complete Dentures Technology(Lab) is great.

This study was conducted for 39 patients who are recipients of allogeneic hemopoietic stem cell transplantation at BMT ward of St. Mary's hospital affiliated to Catholic University of Korea from April to September 1999. The subjects were devided into two groups; those who received both TEl and chemo therapy as conditioning regimen (TEl group). and those who used chemo agents as singular conditioning regimen (chemo group). The oral intake status of the two groups were compared through physical assessment and blood chemistry exam of the subjects, and factors influencing their nutritional change and oral intake were explored in each stage of the transplantation (six stages: admission, conditional stage, date of transplantation, one week after transplantation, two weeks after transplantation, and three weeks after transplantation). The prior aim of the study was to provide baseline data to minimize delayed treatment from nutritional deficiency of the subjects. The results were as follows: 1. TBI group was significantly decreased of oral calorie intake in two weeks after transplantation compared to admission and conditioning stage while that of chemo group was significantly decreased on the date of transplantation. 2. TBI group was significantly decreased of protein intake in two weeks after transplantation compared to admission and conditioning stage. In chemo group, protein intake was significantly decreased on the date of transplantation compared to admission. It was remarkable that TBI group showed lesser protein intake than chemo group. 3. Both group were significantly decreased of BMI in one week and three weeks after transplantation compared to admission. TBI group showed significantly higher BMI than chemo group. 4. Both group were significantly decreased of Triceps Skinfold Thickness (TST)on the date of transplantation compared to admission stage. 5. TBI group was significantly decreased of mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC) in two weeks after transplantation compared to admission, conditioning, date of transplantation. 6. TBI group was significantly decreased of albumin level in two weeks after transplantation compared admission stage. In chemo group, it was significantly decreased on the date of transplantation compared to admission, three weeks after the transplantation. 7. TBI group was significantly decreased of transferrin level in two weeks after transplantation compared admission, conditioning, date of transplantation and one week after transplantation. In chemo group, it was decreased of transferrin level in 3 weeks after transplantation. 8. Oral intake of TEl group was impacted by vomiting before transplantation and gingivitis after transplantation. In chemo group, it was impacted by vomiting before transplantation and by two factors, gingivitis and nausea, after transplantation. The results showed oral calorie intake was not different between the two groups while protein intake was significantly lower in TBI group than chemo group. Oral intake was significantly impacted by vomiting before transplantation in both groups, but affected by oral gingivitis in TBI group and gingivitis and nausea in chemo group after transplantation. This findings present that standardized strategies to manage nutrition and gingivitis more effectively are desperately needed to enhance oral intake and protein intake of patients who receive TBI as conditioning regimen.
Purpose: Choukroun's platelet-rich-fibrin (PRF) is composed of platelets, white blood cells and fibrin matrix. It does not induce enough bone formation by itself but it can improve bone formation with calcium. Silk fibroin does not cause inflammatory reactions because it is bio-compatible and degradable. The purpose of this study was to exam the bone formation when a combination of Choukroun's PRF and silk fibroin was used. Methods: In this study, cell reactions to silk powder with differing molecular weights was first tested to select the appropriate silk powder. Then we applied these bone graft materials on defects of skull and in a peri-implant bony defect model in New Zealand rabbits. The results between the experimental and control s (non-grafted) group were analyzed. Results: The small sized silk fibroin powder showed increased cellular proliferation for bone-regeneration. There was no statistically significant difference between the experimental group and the control group at 6 weeks, but more new bone formation was observed in the combination graft group at 12 weeks (P<0.05). And in the dental implant model, the combination bone graft group showed much improved torque test results, which was statistically significant. Histomorphometric analysis showed more regenerated cortical bone and a higher mean bone to implant in the experimental group. Both were statistically significant. Conclusion: The combination graft of Choukroun's platelet-rich-fibrin (PRF) and silk fibroin powder can successfully restore the bony defects in a skull defected model and a peri-implant bony defects model.

4-Tert-Octylphenol (OP) is a surfactant additive widely used in the manufacture of a variety of detergents and plastic products. OP can disrupt endocrine function in humans and animals. This study was carried out to obtain toxicokinetic parameters of OP in male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Male rats were administered with OP by single oral application of 200 mg/kg body weight. Blood, urine and tissues samples were taken at several time intervals after administration. Analysis of samples for OP was performed by column-switching high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In addition, we exam-ined tissue distribution and accumulation of OP after single oral application of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, single intravenous injection of 1, 5 and 10 mg/kg or daily application of 50 mg/kg for 14 consecutive days. After single oral administration of 200 mg/kg, Cmax of 213 $\pm$ 123 ng/ml was reached within the first 1.3 hr (Tmax) in the plasma. AUC was calculated for 1,333$\pm$484 ngㆍhr/ml. The final elimination half-life of plasma was longer than that of urine, but urinary clearance was lower than oral. A very small fraction of OP (Fe < 0.0017%) was excreted in urine within 24 hr. These results indicated that the major excretion route of OP was not urine. The mean maximal tissue distribution of OP was obserbed at 6 hr after treatment and slowly decreased time-dependently. High OP concentrations were detected in fat at 24 hr. The OP in fat was slowly released with longer elimination half-life and lower clearance than that of other tissues. OP was not accumulated in the liver following single oral application but 14-day oral treatments resulted in two-fold accumulation. It was probably due to the saturation of detoxification pathways. On the other hand, the mRNA expression of cytochrome P450 isoforms except CYP2C11 was not affected by OP at any dose. The expression of CYP2C11 mRNA decreased in a dose-dependent manner. This result suggests that OP changes expression of the male-specific cytochrome P450 isoforms in rat liver, and these changes are closely related to the toxic and estrogenic effect of OP.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of antral septa and the accuracy of panoramic radiograph in identifying maxillary sinus septa. In addition, when panoramic radiograph led to a false diagnosis of more than majority, we analyzed findings of the panoramic radiograph. Patients and methods: This study included 180 patients who were radiographically examined before the surgery was done using both panoramic and computerized tomographic radiographs(CT scan), Samsung Medical Center from April 2003 to March 2006, and examined the incidence of antral septa, the false diagnosis rate of panoramic radiograph, and radiographic characters in case of false diagnosis. Only those bone lamellae were considered as septa that showed a height of at least 3.0mm. It was thus possible to exclude the alveolar recess. One oral and maxillofacial surgeon(OMFS) determined the presence or absence of sinus septa in CT scan, and five OMFS determined the presence or absence of sinus septa in panoramic radiograph. Results: The septa were observed in 81 of 360 sinuses(22.5%). All septa were oriented in a buccopalatal plane. More or less greater prevalence was observed in the second molar region(38.2%) but no predominant location was found. Panoramic radiograph led to false diagnosed septa in 361 of 1800 cases(20.1%). In case of false diagnosis of more than majority, superimposed image on zygomatic process was 44.1%, faint image in the region not related to sinus lifting 26.5%, faint image in the region related to sinus lifting 17.6%, and misconception for superimposed image 11.8% Conclusion: In this study we could get clinico-anatomical information of septum in the maxillary sinus. Compared to CT scan, panoramic radiograph can not clearly differentiate the sinus septa, but we consider that panoramic radiograph may improve its usefulness if we take additional modified panoramic radiograph and clinical exam.
