Concept Analysis of the Role in Nursing Profession (간호전문직에서의 역할의 개념분석)

  • Purpose : Nursing profession has been rapidly changed due to the development of bioscience and the change of medical service environment. Nursing profession that has been focused on only care giver's role like mother's in tradition, is required careful reflection new nursing role to cope properly to the change of medical service environment. In nursing profession, the concept of the role was used without an accurate definition, as a results, the concept of the role was mixed with the concept of the "activity", "job" and "function". Therefore, concept analysis of the role in nursing profession is needed to remove conceptual ambiguous and make confirm the true meaning of the role. Concept analysis is a strategy that examine the characteristics of a concept. It is a formal linguistic exercise to determine those defining attributes. The basic purpose of concept analysis is to clarify ambiguous concept in theory, and propose operational definition which reflects the theoretical base of the concept. Method : In this study, the concept of the role in nursing profession which was analyzed based on the steps of concept analysis by Walker & Avant(1988). Results : The attributes of the concept of the role in nursing profession are : 1. Basic factors to construct social structure. 2. Expected attitudes, values, behavior patterns according to the social status and position in social structure. 3. Perceptive attitudes, values, behavior patterns in order to social interaction. 4. Acquiring through continuous communication and learning. 5. Not fixative but changeable. The antecedents of the role in nursing profession are : 1. The social status and position which is possessed by a person. 2. Expected attitudes, values, behavior patterns according to the social status and position in social structure. 3. Acquiring through continuous interaction, communication, and learning process. And the consequences of the role in nursing profession are : 1. The role maintenance and the role expansion as a positive consequences. 2. The role conflict and the role loss as a negative consequences. Conclusion : Through this concept analysis, the concept of the role in nursing profession is defined as As basic factors to construct social structure, person's attitudes, values, behavior patterns which are expected from other social members according to person's social status and position, and perceived and acquired through continuous interaction, communication, and leaning process.

The Factors Influencing Nursing Profession Perception of Nursing Student (간호대학생의 간호직 인식 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the nursing profession perception of nursing students. Methods: Data were collected with a questionnaire distributed to 305 nursing students in U city. Data were collected from March 30 to June 15, 2019. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 22.0 program. Results: There were significant differences in the level of interpersonal trust (F=5.42, p<.001), empathy ability (F=3.13, p=.015), interpersonal relationship ability (F=3.64, p=.006) and nursing profession perception (F=11.95, p<.001) on the major satisfaction. The level of interpersonal trust (r=.21, p<.001), empathy ability (r=.27, p<.001) and interpersonal relationship ability (r=.28, p<.001) were positively correlated with nursing profession perception. Also empathy ability (r=.11, p=.047), interpersonal relationship ability (r=.49, p<.001) with interpersonal trust and correlation of empathy ability with interpersonal relationship ability (r=.32, p<.001) were positively correlated with each other. The significant variables that influence the nursing profession perception were grade, major satisfaction, empathy ability and interpersonal relationship ability. These factors were responsible for 21.3%. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that educational programs are necessary to raise the nursing perception of nursing students and reduce the turnover of nurses.

A Study for Relationship Between the Femininity and the Nursing Image of Nursing Students (일부 간호학생의 여성성과 간호상과의 상관관계)

  • The present research set out to further validate the results that Stromborg (1976) obtained in which a correlation (r= .22, p < .001) was found between the femininity of woman nursing students and their image of nursing. In addition the experimenter set out to elucidate any possible differences in the image of nursing according to (a) religion, (b) the motivation for choosing nursing as well as, (c) the particular area in which the students hoped to work after graduating. The research was conducted by presenting questionnaire type scales including a femininity scale and a nursing image scale, to 301 graduating students attending 4 Three-year nursing schools located within Seoul from November 21st, 1978 to November 30th. The results: 1. There was clearly no relation between femininity and the image of nursing as such (r= .01, p > .43). But upon analyzing the results along five subdimensions of the nursing image variable it was discovered that : (a) if femininity is low, the nursing student tend to view the educational preparation for becoming a nurse in a more positive light (r= -.10, p < .05), and (b) if femininity is high, the students tend to perceive their social role with a positive frame of mind (r= .15, p < .005). 2. There was a significant difference found in the image of nursing as related to the religion of the nursing students, The means ranked as follows (high scores indicate a positive image of the nursing profession). Catholic > Protestant > no religion > Buddhist 3, The difference in the nursing image according to motivation for sellecting the profession emerged as quite significant (F=6.92, p < .001). The rank of the means when the subject group is divided along the dimension of motive is as follows (ranking begins with the most positive nursing image): (a) The profession itself seemed good; (b) after marriage one can do a social type of activity; (c) significant others’advice: (d) the profession matches their high school grade record; (e) it matches the economic situation of the student; (f)no particular reason for their choice: (g) it's easy to get a nursing job after graduation. 4. The particular area of nursing one intended to go into after graduation varied significantly in terms of the image of nursing (F=3.03, p < .005). The means when ranked starting with those having the most positive image of the profession: (a) nurses helping deliveries; (b) hospital nurses: (c) nursing education; (d) school nurses: (e) government nurse supervisors: (f)public health nurses: (g) (students not going into any profession); (h) (students not going into the nursing profession but into some other area).

A study on the relation among attitudes toward unions, views on nursing profession and career commitment (간호사의 노동조합에 대한 태도와 간호전문직관, 헌신몰입에 관한 연구)

  • In studies on the hospital labor-management relations, research about the attitudes of workers and management toward unions was relatively untouched in Korea. This study was investigated to identify the relation among ideal, actual attitudes toward unions, ideal, actual views on nursing profession and career commitment. Data was obtained from a convenience sample of 285 nurses of varying positions, education, career, join union or not. The results of this study were as follows. 1. There was significant differences between ideal attitude toward unions and actual (p < .001). 2. There was significant differences between ideal view on nursing profession and actual (p< .001). 3. There were no correlations between ideal and actual attitude toward unions and nursing career commitment. 4. There were correlation between ideal and actual views on nursing and nursing career commitment(r=.32, r=.46). As the results show, views on nursing profession are more important factor to inhance nursing career commitment than attitude toward union. So the findings of this study suggest that antecedents and moderating variables need to be explored for further theoretical specification and empirical evaluation.

Sociological Evaluation for Nurses (간호원에 대한 사회적인 평가)

  • This is a research on general evaluation of the nursing profession which is a professional job, a suitable calling to women and is developing academically day by day. The author gave some questions to the patients, doctors, people, student nurses-themselves and got the following results; (A) General concept about nursing profession A nurse is a member, of a medical team who works for people′s health promotion(50.8%). The reason that the nursing profession is a good one is that it is a rewarding job to care for sick patients(78.9%). The spirit is the most important factor for the nurse(84.8%) and the nursing profession is a suitable calling to women (76%). The description of nurses as "The angels in white dress" is an appropriate one (44.6%) or only a beautiful expression(47.4%) (B) Nurses as actually seen by doctors and patients. They work only obligatorily (47.8%)-Doctors They try to relieve, the patient′s physical discomforts in all sincerity (65.6%), also they to decrease the patient′s mental apprehension (56.7%). (C) Satisfaction in the nursing profession. Nurses satisfaction in the nursing profession is general(68.8%) and student nurses satisfaction in selecting nursing is fulfilled (50.9%). One reason for dissatisfaction among nurses and student nurses is people's failure to understanding the nursing profession(40.1%), One reason for satisfaction is that it is a rewarding job caring for sick patients(35%). (D) Is the nursing professional job? People think the nursing profession is a professional job like doctors or lawyers (60.2%). (E) Are they academic? People think the nurses are academic(37.8%) but nurses read only interesting items in the "Journal of Korean Nurse"(67.7%). (F) Opinions about nurses′going out of the country. Doctors and nurses agree that after 1-2 years′experience in this country(78.5%) and student nurses want to go out where there is on opportunity(73.1%). Student's purpose of going out is to enrich their stock of information(71.3%), doctors think, it is for training in nursing knowledge and skills (47.8%). (G) Opinions about nurse′s social affairs. They want nurses to be controlled(44.4%) and also think that the nurse's demonstration in the National Conte. was reasonable (36.3%). (H) Would you make your daughter a nurse? They favour their daughter′s becoming a nurse(17.4%) because they think it is a rewarding job to care for sick patients(42.5%).

Comparison of Motivation of Choosing a Teaching Profession, Teacher Efficacy, and Satisfaction of Teaching Class by Motivation of Choosing a Teaching Profession Group among Pre-Health Education Teachers (예비 보건교사의 교직선택 동기, 교사효능감, 교직수업 만족도 연구: 교직선택 동기 그룹별 비교를 중심으로)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the motivation of choosing a teaching profession, teacher efficacy, and satisfaction of teaching class of pre-health education teachers and compare the teacher efficacy, and satisfaction of teaching class by motivation of choosing a teaching profession group. Methods: The participants were 54 pre-health education teachers studying the teaching curriculum in 1 college located in S city. The collected data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, cluster analysis, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis using SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: The average motivation of choosing a teaching profession, teacher efficacy, satisfaction of teaching class were above medium. After cluster analysis, 3 distinct groups emerged: motivation of choosing a teaching profession high group, motivation of choosing a teaching profession middle group, motivation of choosing a teaching profession low group. And the results showed significant differences in teacher efficacy, satisfaction of teaching class according to motivation of choosing a teaching profession group. Conclusion: The findings indicate that motivation of choosing a teaching profession affect the teacher efficacy, satisfaction of teaching class. Therefore It is necessary to identify the variables that influence motivation of choosing a teaching profession.

Development of Standards and Criteria for Accreditation of a Baccalaureate Nursing Education Program: Reflections on the Unique Characteristics of the Nursing Profession (간호학 특성을 반영한 4년제 간호교육 평가인정 표준 및 기준 개발)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine characteristics of nursing science and identify expected outcomes from baccalaureate graduates, and to develop accreditation standards and criteria reflecting the characteristics of the nursing profession. Methods: A methodological research design was utilized in this study. Related literature reviews and the nursing education program goals and objectives of the 99 nursing schools in Korea were analyzed. A cross-sectional survey research design was utilized to test the validity of the developed characteristics of the nursing profession and their accreditation criteria and standards. The face validity was from the advisory committee and public committee hearing. Results: The characteristics of nursing science were defined with five concepts including humanity, scientific knowledge, professionalism, therapeutic relationship, and facilitating well-being. The expected outcomes from graduates were identified as providing holistic nursing, critical thinking, establishing professionalism and leadership, construction of a therapeutic relationship, and skilled nursing practice. Finally6 standards and 14 criteria reflecting the unique characteristics of the nursing profession were developed for accreditation. These proposed accreditation standards and criteria are a challenge to promote the quality of nursing science.

A study on the change of the views on nursing profession of the nursing college students (간호전문대학생의 재학중 간호전문직관의 변화에 관한 연구)

  • The aims of this study are to identify the perceptions and learning needs related to nursing profession of nursing students and to provide the basic data for development of curriculum. The questionnaire used for this study includes 103 items categorized as the fellowing 8 areas : the perception of nursing profession, competency as a nurse, the perception about clients, priorities in nursing activity, the knowledge required for, an ideology about nursing. Data was collected from the same students through their first grade in 1993 to third grade in 1995. The results are as follows : 1) In terms of the views on nursing profession, most of the students responded it as helping treatment of disease. Higher the grade, more significant with regard to health counseling, utilization of nursing and skills, nursing for community people. 2) Asked about competency as a nurse, sufficient professional knowledge on the nursing was responded as the highest. 3) Asked about the clients of nursing, 'patients' was the highest and as the grade was high, the items on 'family', 'community people', 'community' were high. 4) With regard to the points to be considered in the performance of nursing, while 'physical respect', 'psychological respect' were commonly responded, 'spiritual respect' highly responded in the second and third grades. 5) Asked about what nursing activity is, 'to relieve the pain' was high in the first and second grades, 'the promotion of health' was high in the third grade. 6) With regard to the ideology on nursing, the humanity and belief and faith were commonly responded. These results suggest, even though the expanded role of nursing was recognized, there is the tendency of illness oriented, to be need of reinforcement on the curriculum management in nursing education.
