  • A finite element model is developed for the process of squeeze casting of metal matrix composites (MMCs) in cylindrical molds. The fluid flow and the heat transit. are fundamental phenomena in squeeze casting. To describe heat transfer in the solidification of molten aluminum, the energy equation is written in terms of temperature and enthalpy are applied in an axisymmetric model which is similar to the experimental system. A one dimensional flow model simulates the transient metal flow. A direct iteration technique was used to solve the resulting nonlinear algebraic equations, using a computer program to calculate the enthalpy, temperature and fluid velocity. The cooling curves and temperature distribution during infiltration and solidification were calculated fer pure aluminum. Experimentally, the temperature was measured and recorded using thermocouple wire. The measured time-temperature data were compared with the calculated cooling curves. The resulting agreement shows that the finite element model can accurately estimate the solidification time and predict the cooling process.

  • Analyses of flow and heat transfer characteristics and shape optimization of internally finned circular tubes have been performed for three-dimensional periodically fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer. CFD and mathematical optimization are coupled in order to optimize the shape of heat exchanger. The design variables such as fin widths $(d_{1},\;d_{2})$ and fin height (h) are numerically optimized by minimizing the pressure loss and maximizing the heat transfer rate for limiting conditions of $d_{1}=0.2\~1.5\;mm,\;d_{2}=0.2\~1.5\;mm,$ and $h=0.2\~1.5mm$. Due to the periodic boundary conditions along main flow direction, the three layers of meshes are considered. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method and the optimization is carried out by means of the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method which is widely used in the constrained nonlinear optimization problem.

  • Flexible circular cantilever beams when excited externally introduce a lot of dynamic characteristics. The non-linear elements that these flexible beams develop include non-linearity due to inertia terms, spring, and damping. They show different characteristics of motion from each other. In the modes of lower order, the non-linearity due to spring is prevalent, while the non-linearity due to inertia Is prevalent in the modes of higher order. To analyze these effects the non-linear phenomena are analyzed experimentally. When the response characteristics of non-linear vibration are analyzed using autospectrum, it is possible to analyze the subharmonic and superharmonic mot ion by comparison. The phase change is analyzed using the method of phase portrait and the non-linear characteristics of response characteristics that are developed in flexible structures can be predicted and applied to the stage of design.

  • Container ships has a transverse section in the form of an open profile, making it very sensitive to torsion phenomena. To minimize this effect, a structure known as a torsion box exists, which is subject to high stresses influenced by the fatigue phenomenon and the existence of cut-outs, for the passage of the longitudinal stiffeners, acting as stress concentrators. The aim of this study is to propose a two-stage design methodology to aid designers in satisfying the structural requirements and contribute with to a better understanding of the considered structure. The transverse webs of a torsional box structure are examined by comparing different cut-out geometries from numerical models with different regular load conditions to obtain the variables of the fatigue safety factor through linear regression models. The most appropriate geometry of the torsion box is established in terms of minimum weight, from nonlinear multivariable optimization models.

  • The goal of this paper is to describe an advanced method of the fault diagnois using Control Theory with reference to a crack detection, a new way to localize the crack position under infulence of the plant disturbance and white measurement noise on a rotating shaft. As a first step, the shaft is physically modelled with a finite element method as usual and the dynamic mathematical model is derived from it using the Hamilton - principle and in this way the system is modelled by various subsystems. The equations of motion with crack is established by adaption of the local stiffness change through breathing and gaping from the crack to the equation of motion with un-damaged shaft. This is supposed to be regarded as reference for the given system. Based on the fictitious model of the time behaviour induced from vibration phenomena measured at the bearings, a nonlinear State Observer is designed in order to detect the crack on the shaft. This is elementary NL- observer(EOB). Using the elementary observer, an Estimator(Observer) Bank is established and arranged at the certain position on the shaft. In case a crack is found and its position is known, the procedure for the estimation of the depth is going to begin.

  • In 2023, the World Meteorological Organization released a report on climate conditions in Asia, highlighting the region's high vulnerability to floods and the increasing severity and frequency of extreme precipitation events. While previous studies have largely concentrated on broader-scale phenomena such as the Asian monsoon, it is crucial to investigate the substantial characteristics of extreme precipitation for a better understanding. In this study, we analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of extreme precipitation during summer and their affecting factors by decomposing the moisture budgets within specific Asian regions over 44 years (1979~2022). Our findings indicate that dynamic convergence terms (DY CON), which reflect changes in wind patterns, primarily drive extreme rainfall across much of Asia. In southern Asian sub-regions, particularly coastal areas, extreme precipitation is primarily driven by low-pressure systems, with DY CON accounting for 70% of the variance. However, in eastern Asia, both thermodynamic advection and nonlinear convergence terms significantly contribute to extreme precipitation. Notably, on the Korean Peninsula, thermodynamic advection plays an important role, driven by substantial moisture carried by strong southerly mean flow. Understanding these distinct characteristics of extreme rainfall across sub-regions is expected to enhance both predictability and resilience.

  • Recently, an artificial beach has been constructed compensating for loss of the natural one caused by the development of coastal area, as well as serving as a location for recreational activities such as sea bathing. It is well known that some structure should be constructed to protect an artificial beach from the outflow due to wave action of the reclaimed sand. In general, dike is utilized as the structure to protect an artificial beach. And, one of the factors which may need to be taken into consideration for stability of dike on seabed foundation is the ground water behavior behind dike. However, the interrelated phenomena of nonlinear wave and ground water response have relatively little attention although these interactions are important for stability of structure and sand suction to the artificial beach. In this paper, the numerical wave tank was developed to clarify nonlinear wave, dike and ground water dynamic interaction, which can simulate the difference of ground water and mean water level. Using the developed numerical wave tank, the present study investigates how variation of ground water level influences hydrodynamic characteristics in seabed around dike and numerically simulates the wave fields, pore flow patterns, pore water pressures and vorticities according to variation of ground water level. Numerical results explain well how hydrodynamic characteristics in seabed around dike is affected by the variation of ground water level.

  • This paper deals with the dynamical analysis of a two-point mooring vessel under surge excitations. The characteristics of nonlinear behaviors are investigated completely including bifurcation and limit cycle according to particular input parameter changes. The strong nonlinearity of the mooring system is mainly caused by linear and cubic terms of restoring force. The numerical simulation is performed based on the fourth order Runge-Kutta algorithm. The bifurcation diagram and several instability phenomena are observed clearly by varying amplitudes as well as frequencies of surge excitations. Stable periodic solutions, called the periodic windows, can be obtained in succession between chaotic clouds of dots in case of frequency ${\omega}=0.4rad/s$. In addition, the chaotic region is unexpectedly increased when external forcing amplitude exceeds 1.0 with the angular frequency of ${\omega}=0.7rad/s$. Compared to the cases for ${\omega}=0.4$, 0.7rad/s, the region of chaotic behavior becomes more fragile than in the case of ${\omega}=1.0rad/s$. Finally, various types of steady states including sub-harmonic motion, limit cycle, and symmetry breaking phenomenon are observed in the two-point mooring system at each parameter value.

  • The behavior of wave-induced pore water pressure inside the rubble mound and seabed, and the resultant structure failure are investigated, which are used in design of the composite breakwater representing the coastal and harbor structures. Numerical simulation techniques have been widely used to assess these behaviors through linear and nonlinear methods in many researches. While the combination of strongly nonlinear analytical method and turbulence model have not been applied yet, which can simulate these characteristics more accurately. In this study, olaFlow model considering the wave-breaking and turbulent phenomena is applied through VOF and LES methods, which gives more exact solution by using the multiphase flow analytical method. The verification of olaFlow model is demonstrated by comparing the experimental and numerical results for the interactions of regular waves-seabed and regular waves-composite breakwater-seabed. The characteristics of the spatial distributions of horizontal wave pressure, excess-pore-water pressure, mean flow velocity and mean vorticity on the upright caisson, and inside the rubble mound and seabed are discussed, as well as the relation between the mean distribution of vorticity size and mean turbulent kinetic energy. And the stability of composite breakwater are also discussed.

  • For the design of composite breakwater as representative one of the coastal and harbor structures, it has been widely discussed by the researchers about the relation between the behavior of excess-pore-water pressure inside the rubble mound and seabed caused by the wave load and its structural failure. Recently, the researchers have tried to verify its relation through the numerical simulation technique. The above researches through numerical simulation have been mostly applied by the linear and nonlinear analytic methods, but there have been no researches through the numerical simulation by the strongly nonlinear mutiphase flow analytical method considering wave-breaking phenomena by VOF method and turbulence model by LES method yet. In the preceding research of this study, olaFlow model based on the mutiphase flow analytical method was applied to the nonlinear interaction analysis of regular wave-composite breakwater-seabed. Also, the same numerical techniques as preceding research are utilized for the analysis of irregular wave-composite breakwater-seabed in this study. Through this paper, it is investigated about the horizontal wave pressures, the time variations of excess-pore-water pressure and their frequency spectra, mean flow velocities, mean vorticities, mean turbulent kinetic energies and etc. around the caisson, rubble mound of the composite breakwater and seabed according to the changes of significant wave height and period. From these results, it was found that maximum nondimensional excess-pore water pressure, mean turbulent kinetic energy and mean vorticity come to be large equally on the horizontal plane in front of rubble mound, circulation of inflow around still water level and outflow around seabed is formed in front of rubble caisson.
