Domestic Environment Analysis for Building FTB Aircraft with AESA Radar (AESA Radar 탑재 FTB 항공기 구축을 위한 국내환경 분석)

  • Recently, active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, electro-optical and infrared (EO-IR) and infra-red search and track (IRST) sensors are under development in the Korean fighter experimental(KF-X) project, and AESA radar is currently undergoing preliminary research for flight testing. This paper focuses on the flying test bed (FTB) aircraft operation cases of developed countries in accordance with AESA radar development. As a result, we review domestic laws and regulations related to the airworthiness for FTB aircraft to operate in domestic environment and look for ways to operate FTB aircraft. Therefore, we propose how to selecting, airworthiness and operating FTB aircraft suitable for the domestic environment.

A Study on the Dynamic Response Analysis of the Fishery Barge Type Offshore Structure for Fitting Radar Reflector (레이더 리프렉터 장착을 위한 어업용 바지선의 동적 응답해석에 관한 연구)

  • To install a radar reflector on small ships, such as a small fishing vessel, a fishery buoy, and a barge ship for fishery, it is very important to develop the optimal system which may determine a proper installation location. For this, the response characteristics how waves have an effect on the small ships should be accurately analyzed. In this paper, we analyze the dynamic behaviors of small ships, which may be caused by irregular waves. To do this, we investigate how a barge ship responses to wavelength, water depth, and directions of incoming waves. The analyzed results shall be utilized to evaluate an effect on a radar cross section when we install an radar reflector on a barge ship for fishery and a small ship.

Development of High power Threat Signal Simulator and Interfacing Tracking Radar (고출력 위협신호 모의장치 개발 및 추적레이다 연동)

  • In this study, in order to test the performance of the aircraft system, a threat signal simulator that can transmit a signal similar to the actual threat to the aircraft under test with high power was designed. The high-power threat signal simulator should be able to transmit broadband (UHF band, L band, S band, X band) communication signals and radar signals, and control to transmit signals accurately directed to the aircraft through interfacing tracking radar. The signal strength of the developed equipment is 63 dBm to 93 dBm or more depending on type of signal, and the tracking precision is less than 0.1 degree, which satisfies the required performance. And it was confirmed that the antenna of the high-power threat signal simulator can accurately direct the signal to the aircraft position through the tracking radar interfacing.

  • With the recent prediction of 'Cycle 25', the importance of space weather research increases. Accordingly, the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC)-23 has adopted Agenda Item 9.1a) and carried out sharing researches between active/passive space weather observation systems and existing services. Therefore, in this paper, in order to increase the precision of space weather environment data and secure the frequency spectrum for observation systems, the direct interference effect from the weather radar in Gosan, Jeju on the space weather observation receiver in Hallim, Jeju, and the indirect interference on the observation receiver by diffraction and scattering from the radar target have been analyzed. As a result, it can be known that the radar direction, the propagation direction diffracted and scattered from the target, and the Rradar Cross Section (RCS) of the radar target, the reception area of the space weather observation antenna, and the antenna off-boresight are important parameters for the interference effect analysis.

  • AESA radar is able to instantaneously and adaptively position and control the beam, and this enables to have interleaved mode in modern airborne AESA radar which can maximize situational awareness capability. Interleaved mode provides two or more modes simultaneously, such as Air to Air mode and Sea Surface mode by time sharing technique. In this interleaved mode, performance degradation is inevitable, compared with single mode operation, and effective resource allocation is the key component for the success of interleaved mode. In this paper, we identified performance evaluation items for each mode to analyze interleaved mode performance and proposed effective resource allocation methodology to achieve graceful performance degradation of each mode, focusing on detection range. We also proposed beam scheduling techniques for interleaved mode.

  • To detect targets for autonomous navigation of unmanned ground vehicle, mounted sensors are required to work all-weather condition. In this point of view, the FMCW radar is quietly appropriate. In this paper, we present development results of target signal simulator for multi-beam type FMCW radar. A target signal simulator make pseudo target signals which simulates multiple moving targets. And we describe how to make hit information for each target in multi-beam type radar. The developed methods are utilized for target tracking device. Moreover it can be applied to similar target signal simulator.

  • This paper describes the system for evaluating the sea wave informations such as wave direction and wave length in real time, by using image data obtained from the marine X-band radar. We proposed here a method for automatic selection of the partial image data without the user's individual selection at the radar. We also discussed that the wave direction could be obtained by a 2-dimensional discrete Fourier transform algorithm. We carried some evaluation works on the algorithm through computer simulation. The obtained thirteen radar image data under several sea surface conditions were analyzed by the method described and the result was presented.

  • ARPA(Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) is a device to calculate CPA(closest point of approach)/TCPA(time of CPA), true course and speed of targets by vector operation of relative courses and speeds. The purpose of this study is to develop target acquisition and tracking technology for ARPA Radar implementation. After examining the previous studies, applicable algorithms and technologies were developed to be combined and basic ARPA functions were developed as a result. As for main research contents, the sequential image processing technology such as combination of grayscale conversion, gaussian smoothing, binary image conversion and labeling was deviced to achieve a proper target acquisition, and the NNS(Nearest Neighbor Search) algorithm was appllied to identify which target came from the previous image and finally Kalman Filter was used to calculate true course and speed of targets as an analysis of target behavior. Also all technologies stated above were implemented as a SW program and installed onboard, and verified the basic ARPA functions to be operable in practical use through onboard test.

  • The radar installed on an aircraft has various operating modes depending on tactical purposes, allowing for the configuration of search areas according to each mode's operational objectives. active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar emits search beams sequentially according to a predefined search beam grid within the designated search area specified by the pilot to detect targets within it. It is crucial that the radar can stably search the area designated by the pilot for target detection, even as the aircraft's attitude changes. This paper focuses on stabilizing the search pattern in the air-to-air operational mode of aircraft-mounted radar to ensure stable target detection during roll and pitch maneuvers of the aircraft. The paper demonstrates its performance by simulating aircraft maneuvers and targets in a system integration laboratory (SIL) test environment.
