  • The Mongolian ger is ideally suited to the mongol's steppe climate and the nomadic way of life. This is a multipurpose dwelling which can be easily collapsed, transported to another place and put up again fully preserving its original shape. The pastoral nomadic ger has two key components: the wooden framework and the felt cover. The wooden parts are the walls(khana), the long poles(un), the smoke escape(toono) and its supports(bagana). One wall consists of 10-15 branches of willow tree. each about 1.5m high bound together in a way making it possible to fold it for transportation and then unfold it like an accordion. The unfolded walls are connected to form a circle. The long poles(un) are fastened to the upper part of the walls, with the other end passed through the toono hole, the only sky window and smoke escape through it from the ger. The toono is propped up by two posts, called bagana. All this forms the wooden framework of the ger, which is covered with felt. When the herders fire up their metal stoves, the temperature inside the ger becomes quite comfortable. Because the nomads live in a climate where there is only one growing season in a year, they do not make long migrations to new pastures. Livestock subsist on standing vegetation for eight months of the year. The basic pasture migration strategy is to leave enough standing vegetation at the end of the growing season in September to suffice until the new growth appears the following May. Mongolians use a type of compressed tea leaf that is called "brick" tea in English because it is rock solid and roughly the shape of a brick. And they consume a larger percent(88%) of fat from animal products such as meat, milk, butter, and cheese than any other people in the world. Milk products made from the milk of sheep, yak, and goats are major foods in the nomad's diet, but they are produced mainly in summer when all the animals are lactating. Mongolians made their special nomadic food culture on the steppe.

  • Radiation protection aims to prevent a deterministic effect and minimize a stochastic effect. Overestimating a deterministic effect and a stochastic effect can result in an inaccurate assessment of the risks that will occur in the future, and thus accurate evaluation of the absorbed dose of these fundamental amounts is especially important. This study was intended to measure Kerma using PCXMC 2.0 based on Monte Carlo simulations and to assess the exact absorbed dose by comparing doses produced using multipurpose dosimeter and glass dosimeter. It has been decided to conduct experiments for skull, abdomen and pelvis, and Kerma measured PCXMC 2.0 based on Monte Carlo simulations. The absorbed dose was measured using muli purpose dosimeter and glass dosimeter. The results for the experiments conducted in skull, abdomen, pelvis show that the difference in dose appears great in the order of PCXMC 2.0, muli purpose dosimeter, and the glass dosimeter, and muli purpose dosimeter showed a value closer to that of Kerma. As a result, it has been found that the glass dosimeter was the most advantageous in measuring the actual absorbed dose.

  • The main payload of STSAT-3 (Science and Technology Satellite 3), MIRIS (Multipurpose InfraRed Imaging System) is the first Korean infrared space mission to explore the near-infrared sky with a small astronomical instrument, which is being developed by KASI. The 8-cm passively cooled telescope with a wide field of view (3.67 deg. $\times$ 3.67 deg.) will be operated in the wavelength range from 0.9 to $2{\mu}m$. It will carry out wide field imaging and the emission line survey. The main purposes of MIRIS are to perform the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) observation at two wide spectral bands (I and H band) and to survey the Galactic plane at $1.88{\mu}m$ wavelength, the Paschen-$\alpha$ emission line. CIB observation enables us to reveal the nature of degreescale CIB fluctuation detected by the IRTS (Infrared Telescope in Space) mission and to measure the absolute CIB level. The Pashen-$\alpha$ emission line survey of Galactic plane helps us to understand the origin of Warm Ionized Medium (WIM) and to find the physical properties of interstellar turbulence related to star formation. Here, we also discuss the observation plan with MIRIS.

  • The Korea Academia-Industrial cooperation Society. The Korea Academia-Industrial cooperation Society. In Korea, the territory has east high west low type and the rainfall is concentrated in the summer season. A nation having these topography and precipitation condition like Korea has to basically needs support of hardware alternatives. However, the right places decrease gradually and the resistance of the public opinion for national water resources policy stiffens gradually. The climate change has an effect in water resources fields and has a close relation. In the present study, therefore, future inflow of Miryang multipurpose dam basin is estimated by using SWAT model applied RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios of "Korea Meteorological Administration" and considering the results, the future direction is purposed to operate the dam. As a result, the rainfall pattern is changed from traditional peak form to flat form. The dam operation rule in accordance with changing precipitation pattern has to be modified from the conventional operation rule and a new plan has to be established to meet a situation.

  • In this paper, we present an application layer protocol to support secure wireless Internet services, called Application Layer Security(ALS). The drawbacks of the two traditional approaches to secure wireless applications motivated the development of ALS. One is that in the conventional application-specific security protocol such as Secure HyperText Transfer Protocol(S-HTTP), security mechanism is included in the application itself. This gives a disadvantage that the security services are available only to that particular application. The other is that a separate protocol layer is inserted between the application and transport layers, as in the Secure Sockets Layer(SSL)/Transport Layer Security(TLS). In this case, all channel data are encrypted regardless of the specific application's requirements, resulting in much waste of network resources. To overcome these problems, ALS is proposed to be implemented on top of HTTP so that it is independent of the various transport layer protocols, and provides a common security interface with security applications so that it greatly improves the portability of security applications. In addition, since ALS takes advantages of well-known TLS mechanism, it eliminates the danger of malicious attack and provides applications with various security services such as authentication, confidentiality integrity and digital signature, and partial encryption. We conclude this paper with an example of applying ALS to the solution of end-to-end security in a present commercial wireless protocol stack, Wireless Application Protocol.

  • Youngju multipurpose dam is planned to minimizing the damage by flood and obtaining the water for industrial use in Nakdong river region. Faults in rock mass have strong influences on the behaviors of dam structure. Thus, it is very important to analyse for the characteristics of fault rocks in dam design. However, due to the limitation of geotechnical investigation in design stages, engineers have to carry out the additional geological survey including directional boring to find the distribution of faults and the engineering properties of faults for stability of dam. Especially, the selection of location of dam and type of dam considering fault zone must be analyzed through various experimental and numerical analysis. In this study, various geological survey and field tests were carried out to analyse the characteristics of the large fault zone through the complex dam is designed in foundation region. Also, the distribution of structural geology, the shape of faults and the mechanical properties of fault rock were studied for the reasonable design of the location and type of dam for long-term stability of the complex dam.

  • The existing field survey and aerial photography involve the waste of manpower and economic loss in the coastline survey. To minimize these disadvantages, the digitization for efficient coastline extraction was conducted in this study using the points extracted from the standard coastline of the approximate highest high water and the diverse satellite images (KOMPSAT-3, SPOT-5, Landsat-8 and Quickbird-2), and the comparative accuracy analysis was conducted. The differences between the standard coastline points of the approximate highest high water and the coastline of each satellite were smallest for KOMPSAT-3, followed by Quickbird-2, SPOT-5 and Landsat-8. The significant probability from between the multipurpose applications satellite and Quickbird-2 (significant probability two-tailed) was statistically significant at 1% significance level. Therefore, high-resolution satellite images are required to efficiently extract the coastline, and KOMPSAT-3, from which images are easily acquired at a low cost, will enable the most efficient coastline extraction without external support.

  • Geostationary Ocean Color Imager(GOCI-I), the world's first space-borne ocean color observation geostationary satellite, will be launched on June 2010. Development of GOCI-I took about 6 years, and its expected lifetime is about 7 years. The mission and user requirements of GOCI-II are required to be defined at this moment. Because baseline of the main mission of GOCI-II must be defined during the development time and early operational period of GOCI-I. The main difference between these missions is the global-monitoring capability of GOCI-II, which will meet the necessity of the monitoring and research on climate change in the long-term. The user requirements of GOCI-II will have higher spatial resolution, $250m{\times}250m$, and 12 spectral bands to fulfill GOCI-I's user request, which could not be implemented on GOCI-I for technical reasons. A dedicated panchromatic band will be added for the nighttime observation to obtain fishery information. GOCI-II will have a new capability, supporting user-definable observation requests such as clear sky area without clouds and special-event areas, etc. This will enable higher applicability of GOCI-II products. GOCI-II will perform observations 8 times daily, the same as GOCI-I's. Additionally, daily global observation once or twice daily is planned for GOCI-II. In this paper, we present an improved development and organization structure to solve the problems that have emerged so far. The hardware design of the GOCI-II will proceed in conjunction with domestic or foreign space agencies.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate changes in water quality and aquatic ecosystem health by additional dam release of stream maintenance flow from multipurpose dams in Han river basin ($34,148km^2$) using SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool). The period of additional release was spring (April to June) and autumn (August to October) to evaluate the changes with the data of aquatic ecosystem health survey. The amount of additional release was set proportional to the present dam release, and the maximum release amount was controlled not to exceed the officially notified stream maintenance flow from dam. The 10 percent to 50 percent additional releases showed that the stream water quality (T-N, $NH_4$, T-P, and $PO_4-P$) concentrations except $NO_3-N$ decreased in spring while increased in autumn period. Using the stream water quality results and applying with Random Forest algorithm, the grade of aquatic ecosystem health index (FAI, TDI, and BMI) was improved for both periods especially in the downstream of basin. This study showed that the additional release of stream maintenance flow was more effective in spring than autumn period for the improvement of water quality and aquatic ecosystem.

  • The Seosan-Daesan Port is a representative trade port in Chungnam, and has the sixth largest total cargo throughput and the third largest oil cargo throughput in Korea. However, research on this port's development is lacking relative to that for Busan Port, Incheon Port, and Gwangyang Port, and no study exists that suggests the direction of the development strategy for Seosan-Daesan Port. This study discusses the future role of Seosan-Daesan Port in preparation for a rapidly changing future and the development strategy that should be established. Using the AHP, a development strategy is provided for Seosan-Daesan Port from short/mid-term and long-term viewpoints for three aspects: operation activation, infrastructure construction, and policy support. Operation activation is chosen as the most significant factor from a short/mid-term viewpoint, whereas infrastructure construction is recognized as important from a long-term viewpoint. Specifically, from a short/mid-term viewpoint, sustainable container cargo attraction, multipurpose dock construction, management pier construction, and opening of international passenger ferry lines are important factors while from the long-term viewpoint, hinterland construction, petrochemical industry cluster construction, automobile industry cluster construction, and management improvement system are important. Establishing action plans for each strategy and a cooperative network for sharing goals and strengthening cooperation is necessary.
