The Response Surface Methodology is frequently used for building an approximation model. However, its approximation errors often occur in engineering problem, because of the use of the Least Square Method. Therefore, this paper introduces the Moving Least Square Method to obtain the more accurate Response Surface Model, and then the detent force of a Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor is applied to verify the accuracy of the introduced method.

In this paper, beam forming using moving least squares method (MLSM) is studied. In the previous research, the least squares method (LSM), one of the data interpolation methods, was used to determine the desired beam pattern and obtain a beam pattern that minimizes the square of the error with the desired beam pattern. However, LSM has a disadvantage in that the beam pattern can not be formed to satisfy the exact steering angle of the desired beam pattern and the peak sidelobe level (PSLL) condition. To overcome this drawback, MLSM is used for beam forming. In order to verify, the proposed method is applied in beam forming of Bezier platform array antenna which is one of conformal array antenna platform.

We present a new global-local analysis with the aid of MLS(Moving Least Square) variable-node finite elements which can possess an arbitrary number of nodes on element master domain. It enables us to connect one finite element with a few finite elements without complex remeshing. Compared to other type global-local analysis, it does not require any superimposed mesh or need not solve the equilibrium equation twice. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme, we will show several examples in relation to capturing highly local stress field using global-local analysis.

In this paper, a polyhedral element is presented to solve three-dimensional problems by developing shape functions based on Wachspress coordinates and moving least square approximation. A subdivision of polyhedrons into tetrahedral domains is performed for the construction of shape functions of polyhedral elements, and numerical integration of the weak form is carried out consistently over the tetrahedral domains. The weight functions for moving least square approximation are defined by solving Laplace equation with boundary values based on Wachspress coordinates on polyhedral element faces. Polyhedral elements presented in this paper have similar properties to conventional finite element regarding the continuity, the completeness, the node-element connectivity and the inter-element compatibility. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the present method for solving three-dimensional problems using polyhedral elements.
The ordinary least squares based estiamte $S^2$ of the disturbance variance is considered in the linear regression model when the disturbances follow the first-order moving-average process. It is shown that $S^2$ is weakly consistent estimate for the disturbance varaince without any restriction on the regressor matrix X. Also, simple exact bounds on the relative bias of $S^2$ are given in finite sample sizes.
The gridless (or meshfree) methods, such as MPS, SPH, FPM an so forth, are feasible and robust for the problems with moving boundary and/or complicated boundary shapes, because these methods do not need to generate a grid system. In this study, a gridless solver, which is based on the combination of moving least square interpolations on a cloud of points with point collocation for evaluating the derivatives of governing equations, is presented for two-dimensional unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes problem in the low Reynolds number. A MAC-type algorithm was adopted and the Poission equation for the pressure was solved by successively in the moving least square sense. Some weighing functions were tested in order to investigate the up-winding effect for the convection term. Some typical problems were solved by the presented solver for the validation and the results obtained were compared with analytic solutions and the numerical results by conventional CFD methods, such as FVM.
A Voltage Instability Predictor(VIP) estimates the proximity of a power system to voltage collapse in real time. Voltage Instability Index(Z-index) from VIP algorithm is estimated using LS(Least Square) method. But this method has oscillations and noise of result due to the system's changing conditions. To suppress oscillations, a larger data window needs to be used. In this paper. I propose the new other method which improves that weakness. It uses RLS(Recursive Least Square) to estimate voltage instability index without a large moving data window so this method is suitable for on-line monitor and control in real time. In order to verify effectiveness of the algorithm using RLS method, the method is tested on HydroQuebec system in real time digital simulator(HYPERSIM).

This study is focused on reliability based design optimization (RBDO) using moving least squares. A response surface is used to derive a limit-state equation for reliability based design optimization. Response surface method (RSM) with least square method (LSM) or Kriging will be used as a response surface. RSM is fast to make the response surface. On the other hand, RSM has disadvantage to make the response surface of nonlinear equation. Kriging can make the response surface in nonlinear equation precisely but needs considerable amount of computations. The moving least square method (MLSM) is made of both methods (RSM with LSM+Kriging). Numerical results by MLSM are compared with those by LMS in Rosenbrock function and six-hump carmel back function. The RBDO of engine duct of smart UAV is pursued in this paper. It is proved that RBDO is useful tool for aerospace structural optimal design problems.

This paper presents a description of the point collocation method and its application to the electromagnetic field computation. The interpolation scheme is based on the fast moving least square reproducing kernel approximation. In the method, the integration cell is not required and the essential boundary conditions can be enforced directly. Numerical simulations on 1-D and 2-D problems are carried out to validate the method. It is found that computational efficiency is higher than the general mesh-free methods.

The element-free Galerkin (EFG) method is one of meshless methods, which is an efficient method of modeling problems of fluid or solid mechanics with complex boundary shapes and large changes in boundary conditions. This paper discusses the theory of the EFG method and its applications to modeling of groundwater flow. In the EFG method, shape functions are constructed based on the moving least square (MLS) approximation, which requires only set of nodes. The EFG method can eliminate time-consuming mesh generation procedure with irregular shaped boundaries because it does not require any elements. The coupled EFG-FEM technique was introduced to treat Dirichlet boundary conditions. A computer code EFGG was developed and tested for the problems of steady-state and transient groundwater flow in homogeneous or heterogeneous aquifers. The accuracy of solutions by the EFG method was similar to that by the FEM. The EFG method has the advantages in convenient node generation and flexible boundary condition implementation.
