  • A quadruped monitoring robot is introduced. The robot has several features that poses arbitrary position thanks to a 4-wheel hive mechanism, transmits an image and command data via RF wireless communication, and moreover, the imaged date are transferred through a network communication. The robot plays a role in monitoring what is happening around the robot and covers wide range due to a moving camera operated by the 4-wheel mechanism. The robot system can be applied k versatile models based the distinguished techniques introduced in this paper

  • In this paper, we consider a mobile sensor network for monitoring a polluted area where human beings cannot access. Due to the limited sensing range of individual unmanned vehicles, they need to cooperate to achieve an effective sensing coverage and move to a more polluted region. In order to address the limitations of sensing and communication ranges, we propose a hazardous substance monitoring network based on virtual force algorithms, and develop a testbed. In the considered monitoring network, each unmanned vehicle achieves an optimal coverage and move to the highest interest area based on neighboring nodes sensing values and locations. By using experiments based on the developed testbed, we show that the proposed monitoring network can autonomously move toward a more polluted area and obtain a high weighted coverage.

  • The IoT-based sensor network is one of the methods that can be efficiently applied to maintain the facilities, such as bridges, at a low cost. In this study, based on LoRa LPWAN, one of the IoT communications, sensor board for cable tension monitoring, data acquisition board for constructing sensor network along with existing measurement sensors, are developed to create bridge structural health monitoring system. In addition, we designed and manufactured a smart sensor node for LoRa communication and established a sensor network for monitoring. Further, we constructed a test bed at the Yeonggwang Bridge to verify the performance of the system. The test bed verification results suggested that the LoRa LPWAN-based sensor network can be applied as one of the technologies for monitoring the bridge structure soundness; this is excellent in terms of data rate, accuracy, and economy.

  • This paper presents a web-based real-time monitoring system for a photobioreactor using an WiFi wireless network. An WiFi interface can support high speed data transfer, up to 11Mbps and it can be compatible with commercial wireless LAN environment. Thus, the proposed cell culture based on WiFi network can be easily applied to the reconfigurable system and real-time monitoring system. In this paper, we integrate the commercial WiFi module to the various bio-sensors and sensor control board to configure the wireless network. After we evaluate application S/W for monitoring the environment within incubator, we verify the proposed sensor networks for a cell culture system and its monitoring system. This result can be applicable for various bio-applications that require the network configuration and real-time monitoring system.

  • To analyze the usage information of system and network resources to the each grid application by measuring the real time traffic and calculating the statistic information, we suggested the kernel-based monitoring methods by researching the efficient monitoring method. This method use small system resourcesand measure the monitoring information accurately with less delay than the usual packet capture methods such as tcpdump. Also we implemented the monitoring systems which can monitor the used resources of system and network for grid application using the suggested kernel-based monitoring method. This research can give the useful information to the development of grid application and to grid network scheduler which can assign the proper resources to the grid application to perform efficiently. Network administrator can decide whether the expansion of network is required or not using the monitoring information.

  • Network virtualization is an emerging technology for solving the rigidity of the physical network infrastructure. The innovative technique virtualizes all resources in the network, including the network links and nodes, and provides a number of virtual networks on a single network infrastructure. In order to realize a virtual network, a thorough and complete monitoring of all resources in the network should be performed firstly. OpenFlow is an open source stack for network virtualization. However, it is impossible to apply OpenFlow to AP-based legacy wireless LAN environment because OpenFlow targets ethernet-based LAN environment. In this paper, we implement an adaptor-styled virtual switch for AP-based wireless LAN through customizing the Open vSwitch which is a virtual switch of OpenFlow. The evaluation test results show that the implemented OpenFlow stack operates successfully. The implemented OpenFlow stack can now be plugged immediately in existing AP-based wireless LAN environment and plays network resource monitoring. In the future, we can develop wireless LAN virtualization applications on the wireless OpenFlow stack.

  • In laser surface hardening processes, the geometrical parameters such as the depth and the width of a hardened layer can be utilized to assess the hardened layer quality. However, accurate monitoring of the geometrical parameters for on-line process control as well as for on-line quality evaluation is very difficult because the hardened layer is formed beneath a material surface and is not visible. Therefore, temperature monitoring of a point of specimen surface has most frequently been used as a process monitoring method. But, a hardened layer depends on the temperature distribution and the thermal history of a specimen during laser surface hardening processing. So, this paper describes the estimation results of the geometric parameters using multi-point surface temperature monitoring. A series of hardening experiments were performed to find the relationships between the geometric parameters and the measured temperature. Estimation results using a neural network show the enhanced effectiveness of multi-point surface temperature monitoring compared to one-point monitoring.

  • The rapid water pollution in stream, river, lake and sea in recent years raises an urgent need for continuous monitoring and policymaking to conserve the global clean environment. In particular, the increasing water pollution in coastal marine areas adds to the importance of the environmental monitoring systems. In this paper, the mobile server is designed to gathers information of the water quality at coastal areas. The obtained data by the server is transmitted from field servers to the base station via multi-hop communication in wireless sensor network. The information collected includes dissolved oxygen(DO), hydrogen ion exponent(pH), temperature, etc. By the information provided the real-time monitoring of water quality at the coastal marine area. In addition, wireless sensor network-based flooding routing protocol was designed and used to transfer the measured water quality information efficiently. Telosb sensor node is programmed using nesC language in TinyOS platform for small scale wireless sensor network monitoring from a remote server.

  • Bridges are critical to the civil engineering infrastructure network as they facilitate movement of people, the transportation of goods and services. Given the aging of bridge infrastructure, federal officials mandate visual inspections biennially to identify necessary repair actions which are time, cost, and labor-intensive. Additionally, the expansion joints of bridges are rarely monitored due to cost. However, expansion joints are critical as they absorb movement from thermal effects, loadings strains, impact, abutment settlement, and vehicle motion movement. Thus, the need to monitor bridge expansion joints efficiently, at a low cost, and wirelessly is desired. This paper addresses bridge joint monitoring needs to develop a cost-effective, real-time wireless system that can be validated in a full-scale bridge structure. To this end, a wireless expansion joint monitoring was developed using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) sensors. An in-service bridge was selected as a testbed to validate the performance of the developed system compared with traditional displacement sensor, LVDT, temperature and humidity sensors. The short-term monitoring campaign with the wireless sensor system with the internet protocol version 6 over the time slotted channel hopping mode of IEEE 802.15.4e (6TiSCH) network showed reliable results, providing high potential of the developed system for effective joint monitoring at a low cost.
