  • The activities of Maxi-K channels were recorded using inside-out patches. The application of 30 nM of non-specific G protein activator, GTP $\gamma$S, to the intracellular side of the channels increases the channel activities about 3-fold, indicating that there exist some G proteins within the patch membranes to regulate the channel activities. • Large conductance $Ca^{2+}$-activated $K^{+}$ channels (Maxi-K channel) have been implicated in many important physiological processes such as co-ordination of membrane excitability in neurons. Modulation of these channels are archived by the activity of various protein kinases. The most widely studied example of Maxi-K channel regulation by protein phosphorylation has been obtained using plasma membranes from the rat brain incorporated into lipid bilayers.(omitted)

  • This study was carried out to obtain informations regarding the effect of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine in the LEY (lactoseegg yolk) diluent according to incubation time in 5 ml maxi-straw and the effects of freezing rate, thawing temperature and thawing time in the LEN (lactose-egg yolk and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine) diluent on acrosome morphology and motility of frozen-thawed boar sperm. The study showed that the LEN diluent was higher post-thaw NAR (normal apical ridge) acrosome than the LEY diluent for 0.5 h incubation at 37$^{\circ}C$. However, there were no differences between the LEN and LEY diluents on post-thaw sperm motility according to incubation time. The straws frozen from 5.0 cm (20$^{\circ}C$/min) to 17.0 cm (1$^{\circ}C$/min) above the liquid nitrogen surface did not show any significant differences on post-thaw sperm motility. However, the straws frozen above 5.0 cm from the liquid nitrogen surface were higher NAR acrosome than those frozen above 17.0 cm. The post-thaw percentages of motile sperm and NAR acrosome were significantly higher (p<0.05) for the maxi-straws submerged for 40 or 45 sec in a 52$^{\circ}C$ water bath than for 30, 35, 50 or 55 sec. The mean sample temperatures of maxi-straws after 40 or 45 sec submersion were 20.7 or 26.4$^{\circ}C$. In conclusion, the sample temperature of the thawed semen was very important for post-thaw sperm survival in the LEN diluent of 5 ml maxi-straw. When the temperature of the thawed semen was 20.7$^{\circ}C$, the percentages of motile sperm and NAR acrosome were highest.

  • This study was carried out to compare the agronomic characteristics, forage yield, and feed value of nine sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass hybrids at paddy field cultivation. The nine recommended sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass hybrids used in this study were P877F, Cow pow, Turbo gold, Maxi graze, Jumbo, G7, Sweet home, Honey chew BMR and Green star. Plant height, leaf number, stem diameter, and stem hardness were higher in Jumbo than other varieties (P<0.01). Sugar content (brix) was higher in order of P877F > Sweet home > maxi graze > Green star > Cow pow > G7 (P<0.01). Fresh (86,199kg/ha) and dry matter yield (16,206 kg/ha) of Jumbo were higher than other varieties (P<0.01). Crude protein was the highest in Maxi graze (6.5%), but crude fat was the highest in Honey chew BMR as 2.1% (P<0.01). NDF and ADF of Jumbo and G7 were higher than other varieties (P<0.01). TDN was higher in order of Maxi graze > Sweet home > P877F > Honey chew BMR > Green star, but no significant differences were found among the varieties. Minerals were the highest in Cow pow (15,020.5 mg/kg), and Sweet home (6,222.6 mg/kg) was the lowest as compared to other varieties (P<0.01). Total amino acids were higher in order of Maxi graze > Sweet home > Turbo gold > Honey chew BMR > Jumbo (P<0.01). Crude protein yield and crude fat yield were the highest in Turbo gold (814.6 kg/ha) and Honey chew BMR (309.8kg/ha), respectively (P<0.01). Mineral yield was the highest in Cow pow as 207.6 kg/ha (P<0.01). Amino acid yield (592.2 kg/ha) and TDN yield (10,194 kg/ha) were the highest in Sweet home. Based on the above results, sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass hybrid varieties should be selected on the basis of the purpose of use. Because, each varieties showed various growth characteristics and nutrition yield (protein, fat, mineral, amino acid, TDN).

  • We present our analysis results for an updated orbital ephemeris for the dipping low mass X-ray binary 4U 1624-49, using the light curve collected by the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the Monitor of All-Sky X-ray Image (MAXI). To make clear dip profiles, the light curve from the ASM and the MAXI were divided into ten 500d segments and four 400d segments for ASM and MAXI light curves, respectively, and folded with the linear ephemeris proposed by Smale et al. (2001). The phases of dip centers were determined by the method adopted from Hu et al. (2008). The phase drift was then fitted with a linear function. We obtained an updated orbital period of 0.869896(1) d and a phase zero epoch of JD 2450088.6618(57). No clear orbital period derivative is detected with a 2-sigma upper limit of $1.4{\times}10^{-6}(yr)^{-1}$ from a quadratic curve fitting of the dip phase evolution.

  • We have investigated whether NO affects the activities of the rat brain Maxi- K channels reconstituted into the lipid bilayer. In order to introduce NO, we utilized an antibiotic, streptozotocin (STZ), which releases NO upon illumination. While adding STZ itself did not affect the channel activity, turning on the light in the presence of STZ induced an increase in the open probability (Po) of the channel.(omitted)

  • Combining the AKARI Point Source Catalog and the 37-month Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) catalog, the infrared and X-ray properties of nearby active galactic nuclei were investigated. The 37-month MAXI catalog tabulates 100 nearby Seyfert galaxies, 73 of which are categorized into Seyfert I galaxies. Among these Seyfert galaxies, 69 ones were found to have an AKARI infrared counterpart. For the Seyfert I galaxies in this sample, a well-known correlation was found between the infrared and X-ray luminosities. However, the observed X-ray luminosity of the Seyfert II galaxies tends to be lower for the infrared luminosity than the Seyfert I galaxies. This suggests that the X-ray absorption is significant in the Seyfert II galaxies. The Seyfert II galaxies seem to have a bimodal distribution of the IR color between $18{\mu}m$ and $90{\mu}m$. Especially, a large fraction of the Seyfert II galaxies exhibits a redder IR color than the Seyfert I galaxies. A possible origin of the redder IR color is briefly discussed, in relation to the star formation activity in the host galaxy, and to the X-ray absorption.

  • Objectives: This study was produced to examine the effects of moxibustion that had been played important role to traditional oriental medical treatment on disease. Recently, it was reported that moxi-tar which is generated in the process of moxibustion as burning combustibles decreased nitric oxide(NO) and inducible NO synthase (iNOS) generation in cellular experiments. Methods: Carrageenan-induced arthritis rat model was used to test the effect of moxi-tar as a chronic pain model. Diluted moxi-tar was single injected in several acupoints or combined with electroacupuncture (l ms, 2 Hz, and 2 mA) into contralateral ST36 acupoint for 30 min to assess the synergic effects. After the treatment, behavioral tests measuring stepping force were periodically conducted during the next 12 hours. Endogenous NO and iNOS, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and c-Fos protein expression in the spinal cord were examined on a rat model of carrageenan-induced arthritis. Results : After the induction of arthritis, rats subsequently showed a reduced stepping force of the affected limb for at least the next 4 days. The reduced stepping force of the limb was presumably due to a painful knee, since oral injection of indomethacin produced temporary improvement of weight bearing. Maxi-tar produced significant improvement of stepping force of the hindlimb affected by the arthritis lasting at least 9 hours. The magnitude of this improvement was equivalent to that obtained after an oral injection of 3 mg/kg of indomethacin and this improvement of stepping force was interpreted as an analgesic effect. Maxi-tar produced the improvement of stepping force of the affected hindlimb in a dose-dependent manner. Both NO production and iNOS, COX-2 protein expression increased by arthritis were suppressed by maxi-tar. Moxi-tar on combination with electroacupuncture (EA) produced more powerful and longer lasting improvement of stepping force of the hindlimb affected by the arthritis than either moxi-tar or EA did. Conclusion : The present study suggest that maxi-tar produces a potent analgesic effect on the chronic knee arthritis pain model in the rat and that moxi-tar-induced analgesia modulate endogenous NO through the suppression of iNOS/COX-2 protein expression.
