FPGA Implementation of Real-time 2-D Wavelet Image Compressor (실시간 2차원 웨이블릿 영상압축기의 FPGA 구현)

  • In this paper, a digital image compression codec using 2D DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) is designed using the FPGA technology for real time operation The implemented image compression codec using wavelet decomposition consists of a wavelet kernel part for wavelet filtering process, a quantizer/huffman coder for quantization and huffman encoding of wavelet coefficients, a memory controller for interface with external memories, a input interface to process image pixels from A/D converter, a output interface for reconstructing huffman codes, which has irregular bit size, into 32-bit data having regular size data, a memory-kernel buffer to arrage data for real time process, a PCI interface part, and some modules for setting timing between each modules. Since the memory mapping method which converts read process of column-direction into read process of the row-direction is used, the read process in the vertical-direction wavelet decomposition is very efficiently processed. Global operation of wavelet codec is synchronized with the field signal of A/D converter. The global hardware process pipeline operation as the unit of field and each field and each field operation is classified as decomposition levels of wavelet transform. The implemented hardware used FPGA hardware resource of 11119(45%) LAB and 28352(9%) ESB in FPGA device of APEX20KC EP20k600CB652-7 and mapped into one FPGA without additional external logic. Also it can process 33 frames(66 fields) per second, so real-time image compression is possible.

Analysis on the Performance and Temperature of the 3D Quad-core Processor according to Cache Organization (캐쉬 구성에 따른 3차원 쿼드코어 프로세서의 성능 및 온도 분석)

  • As the process technology scales down, multi-core processors cause serious problems such as increased interconnection delay, high power consumption and thermal problems. To solve the problems in 2D multi-core processors, researchers have focused on the 3D multi-core processor architecture. Compared to the 2D multi-core processor, the 3D multi-core processor decreases interconnection delay by reducing wire length significantly, since each core on different layers is connected using vertical through-silicon via(TSV). However, the power density in the 3D multi-core processor is increased dramatically compared to that in the 2D multi-core processor, because multiple cores are stacked vertically. Unfortunately, increased power density causes thermal problems, resulting in high cooling cost, negative impact on the reliability. Therefore, temperature should be considered together with performance in designing 3D multi-core processors. In this work, we analyze the temperature of the cache in quad-core processors varying cache organization. Then, we propose the low-temperature cache organization to overcome the thermal problems. Our evaluation shows that peak temperature of the instruction cache is lower than threshold. The peak temperature of the data cache is higher than threshold when the cache is composed of many ways. According to the results, our proposed cache organization not only efficiently reduces the peak temperature but also reduces the performance degradation for 3D quad-core processors.

  • World Wide Web is not more meaningless sea of information but is becoming the Semantic Web that provides many users with meaningful information. The starting point is the XML and metadata, RDF is a stopover which gives technique to relate arbitrary web resources. And now, the semantic and logic of web resources can be settled in the Ontology. A lot of educational multimedia web resources in Korea have produced their metadata with KERIS's KEM(Korea Educational Metadata). Therefore our country have to start the study of the semantic and logic in web resources. But, many researchers in Korea are more eager to study Dublin Core's DC and SCORM's LOM metadata specification than KEM. Thus the study of method about sharing and integrating these three metadata specifications should be performed before the study of semantic and logic in web resources in Korea. We design the Ontology to integrate these three metadata specifications and implement the prototype system using this Ontology. These three metadata have some elements that have same labels and meanings, and other elements have different labels and same meanings. To match these different labels which have same meanings, we adapted the one-to-one mapping technique in designing our Ontology. This designed Ontology was imported as "integrated schema" in our prototype searching system to integrate three different metadata in databases. Moreover we know that the more specific property design of class in Ontology was needed in order to provide users with more informed searching results such as synonym, antonym, hierarchy and associations.

Digital Modulation Types Recognition using HOS and WT in Multipath Fading Environments (다중경로 페이딩 환경에서 HOS와 WT을 이용한 디지털 변조형태 인식)

  • In this paper, the robust hybrid modulation type classifier which use both HOS and WT key features and can recognize 10 digitally modulated signals without a priori information in multipath fading channel conditions is proposed. The proposed classifier developed using data taken field measurements in various propagation model (i,e., rural area, small town and urban area) for real world scenarios. The 9 channel data are used for supervised training and the 6 channel data are used for testing among total 15 channel data(i.e., holdout-like method). The Proposed classifier is based on HOS key features because they are relatively robust to signal distortion in AWGN and multipath environments, and combined WT key features for classifying MQAM(M=16, 64, 256) signals which are difficult to classify without equalization scheme such as AMA(Alphabet Matched Algorithm) or MMA(Multi-modulus Algorithm. To investigate the performance of proposed classifier, these selected key features are applied in SVM(Support Vector Machine) which is known to having good capability of classifying because of mapping input space to hyperspace for margin maximization. The Pcc(Probability of correct classification) of the proposed classifier shows higher than those of classifiers using only HOS or WT key features in both training channels and testing channels. Especially, the Pccs of MQAM 3re almost perfect in various SNR levels.

  • Recently, people are getting more interested in green energy resource and environment friendly energy resource due to the lack of energy and global warming. This study produced a solar energy resource map using LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging) data to check if it is utilized for spatial information technology and solar energy sectors that people pay more attentions to as new recycling energy. This study assigned Ulleungdo(Island) located in Gyeongsangbuk-do as a target area. This study created the contour line with 1 meter by newly photographing LiDAR and data processing. And using this contour line, this study built DEM(Digital Elevation Model) data with 1 meter. The incidence range depending on the altitude and azimuth of sun using DEM data is used to evaluate solar energy resource. This is expected to suggest an accurate method to evaluate more reliable and more precise information of new recycling energy resource by producing solar energy resource map based on accurate and precise spatial resolution data with 1 meter level.

Study on the Annealing Effect and Magnetic Properties of a Zn0.7Mn0.3O Film (열처리 효과에 따른 Zn0.7Mn0.3O박막의 자기 특성 연구)

  • We report on the annealing effect and ferromagnetic characteristics of Zn$_{0.7}$Mn$_{0.3}$O film prepared by sol-gel method on the silicon (100) substrate using field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry. Magnetic measurements show thatZn$_{0.7}$Mn$_{0.3}$O films exhibit ferromagnetism at 5 K revealing the coercive field of ∼110 Oe for as grown sample and 360, 1035 Oe for samples annealed at 700, 800 $^{\circ}C$, respectively. Our experimental evidence suggests that ferromagnetic precipitates of a manganese oxide may be responsible for the observed ferromagnetic behaviors of the film.he film.

  • Fifty ancient Korean coins originated in Yi Dynasty have been determined for 9 elements such as Sn, Fe, As, Ag, Co, Sb, Ir, Ru and Ni by instrumental neutron activation analysis and for 3 elements such as Cu, Pb, and Zn by atomic absorption spectrometry. Bronze coins originated in early days of the dynasty contain as major constituents Cu, Pb and Sn approximately in the ratio 90 : 4 : 3, whereas, those in latter days contain in ratio 7 : 2 : 0. Brass coins which had begun in 17 century contain as major constituents Cu, Zn and Pb approximately in the ratio 7 : 1 : 1. The multivariate data have been analyzed for the relation among elemental contents through the variance-covariance matrix. The data have been further analyzed by a principal component mapping method. As the results training set of 8 class have been chosen, based on the spread of sample points in an eigen vector plot and archaeological data such as age and the office of minting. The training set and test set of samples have finally been analyzed for the assignment to certain classes or outliers through the statistical isolinear multiple component analysis (SIMCA).

  • Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques allow the enumeration of chromosome abnormalities and from a great potential for many clinical applications. In order to produce quantitative and reproducible results, expensive tools such as a cooled CCD camera and a computer software are required. We have developed a Chromosome Image Processing System (Chips) using FISH that allows the detection and mapping of the genetic aberrations. The aim of our study, therefore, is to evaluate the capabilities of our original system using a black-and-white video camera. As a model system, three repetitive DNA probes (D18Z1, DXZ1, and DYZ3) were hybridized to variety different clinical samples such as human metaphase spreads and interphase nuclei obtained from uncultured peripheral blood lymphocytes, uncultured amniocytes, and germ cells. The visualization of the FISH signals was performed using our system for image acquisition and pseudocoloring. FISH images were obtained by combining images from each of probes and DAPI counterstain captured separately. Using our original system, the aberrations of single or multiple chromosomes in a single hybridization experiment using chromosomes and interphase nuclei from a variety of cell types, including lymphocytes, amniocytes, sperm, and biopsied blastomeres, were enabled to evaluate. There were no differences in the image quality in accordance with FISH method, fluorochrome types, or different clinical samples. Always bright signals were detected using our system. Our system also yielded constant results. Our Chips would permit a level of performance of FISH analysis on metaphase chromosomes and interphase nuclei with unparalleled capabilities. Thus, it would be useful for clinical purposes.

Sentinel Lymph Node Identification Using $^{99m}Tc$-Neomannosyl Human Serum Albumin in Esophageal Cancer; Comparison with $^{99m}Tc$-Phytate (식도암 환자에서 $^{99m}Tc$-Neomannosyl Human Serum Albumin과 $^{99m}Tc$-Phytate를 이용한 감시림프절 탐색의 비교)

  • Background: The aim of this study was to compare a novel mannose receptor-binding agent(Technetium-99m human serum albumin, $^{99m}Tc$-MSA) with $^{99m}Tc$-phytate for sentinel node mapping in patients with esophageal cancer. Material and Method: Twenty patients with clinical stage T1N0m0 or T2N0M0 esophageal cancer that were candidates for esophagectomy were enrolled. Endoscopic injection of $^{99m}Tc$-MSA or $^{99m}Tc$-phytate was administered at the peri-tumor region before surgery in 10 patients. The radioactive lymph nodes were identified with a handheld gamma probe after lymph node dissection. Results: The patient's age and the sex ratio of both groups were similar. The clinical stage, tumor location, and operative technique did not differ. The total number of dissected lymph nodes did not differ ($28.5{\pm}9.12$ in MSA group, $32.2{\pm}11.24$ in phytate group, p=0.430). The sentinel node was identified in all cases in both groups. The number of sentinel nodes per patient was $2.7{\pm}1.57$ in the MSA group, which was significantly greater than the $1.7{\pm}0.88$ in the phytate group (p=0.036). Five out of 20 patients whose sentinel nodes could be identified had metastases; however, neither group had any false-negative results for sentinel node identification. Conclusion: Sentinel nodes were detected more frequently with MSA than with phytate.

Robust Vision Based Algorithm for Accident Detection of Crossroad (교차로 사고감지를 위한 강건한 비젼기반 알고리즘)

  • The purpose of this study is to produce a better way to detect crossroad accidents, which involves an efficient method to produce background images in consideration of object movement and preserve/demonstrate the candidate accident region. One of the prior studies proposed an employment of traffic signal interval within crossroad to detect accidents on crossroad, but it may cause a failure to detect unwanted accidents if any object is covered on an accident site. This study adopted inverse perspective mapping to control the scale of object, and proposed different ways such as producing robust background images enough to resist surrounding noise, generating candidate accident regions through information on object movement, and by using edge information to preserve and delete the candidate accident region. In order to measure the performance of proposed algorithm, a variety of traffic images were saved and used for experiment (e.g. recorded images on rush hours via DVR installed on crossroad, different accident images recorded in day and night rainy days, and recorded images including surrounding noise of lighting and shades). As a result, it was found that there were all 20 experiment cases of accident detected and actual effective rate of accident detection amounted to 76.9% on average. In addition, the image processing rate ranged from 10~14 frame/sec depending on the area of detection region. Thus, it is concluded that there will be no problem in real-time image processing.
