  • Self-organizing map (SOM), a unsupervised learning neural network, has been developed by T. Kohonen since 1980's. Main application areas were pattern recognition and text retrieval. Because of that, it has not been spread to statisticians until late. Recently, SOM's are frequently drawn in data mining fields. Kohonen's SOM, however, needs improvements to become a statistician's standard tool. First, there should be a good guideline as for the size of map. Second, an enhanced visualization mode is wanted. In this study, principal components self-organizing map (PC-SOM), a modification of Kohonen's SOM, is proposed to meet such needs. PC-SOM performs one-dimensional SOM during the first stage to decompose input units into node weights and residuals. At the second stage, another one-dimensional SOM is applied to the residuals of the first stage. Finally, by putting together two stages, one obtains two-dimensional SOM. Such procedure can be easily expanded to construct three or more dimensional maps. The number of grid lines along the second axis is determined automatically, once that of the first axis is given by the data analyst. Furthermore, PC-SOM provides easily interpretable map axes. Such merits of PC-SOM are demonstrated with well-known Fisher's iris data and a simulated data set.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the satisfaction of the adolescents' school backpack bag and the important criteria when purchasing for developing comfort and functional backpack. The questionnaire was composed and surveyed with 245 middle school students and the data were analyzed through SPSS 13.0. Purchasing criteria were grouped into 5: practical, shop environment, comfort, aesthetic and maintenance. Satisfaction factors were function/comfort, fashion/aesthetic and durability/A.S. 50.2% of students recognized the inappropriate wearing backpack might cause the deformation of body shape. And the wrong habit of wearing bag was found to affect the body posture of students. Main symptoms caused by wearing it for long time are ‘sweating around shoulder and back' and ‘feeling stiff in shoulders and waist'. Needs arise to develop the bag which could prevent them and to educate students how to wear bags. According to the result from MDS of purchasing criteria, one axis is product vs. environment, and other is functional vs. psychological aspects. According to the result from MDS of bag satisfaction, one axis is function/durability vs. fashion/appearance, and other is gestalt quality vs. part quality. They wanted the improvement in the aspects of shape/design, material, maintenance, comfort and usability of the bags. Specially it is required that we research the adolescent customer-oriented way and develop the new materials or shapes pursuing both shoulder comfort and characteristics.

  • This paper deals with six degree-of-freedom HILS(hardware-in-the-loop-simulation) of KSR-III rocket using a TAFMS(three axis flight motion simulator). This TAFMS HILS test is accomplished before main HILS tests in order to verify the control stability in the presence of TAFMS dynamic effects. The TAFMS HILS test includes initial attitude holding tests for INS initial alignment procedures, timer synchronization tests with an auxiliary lift-off signal, real-time calibration tests using an external thermal recorder, open-loop TAFMS operating tests, and final closed-loop TAFMS HILS tests using the TAFMS attitude measurements as inputs to the closed control loop. The HILS tests are accomplished for several flight conditions composed with nominal flight condition, TWD effect added condition, slosh modes and/or bending modes existing condition, and windy condition, etc.

  • A two-axis gimbal-type X-band antenna is widely used to transmit bulk image data from high-resolution observation satellites. However, undesirable microvibrations induced by driving the antenna should be attenuated, because they are a main cause of image-quality degradation of the observation satellite. In this study, a pseudoelastic memory alloy (SMA) gear was proposed to attenuate the microvibrations by driving the antenna in an azimuth angle. In addition, the proposed gear can overcome the limitations of the conventional titanium blade gear, which is not still enough and is vulnerable to plastic deformations under excessive torque. To investigate the basic characteristics of the proposed SMA mesh washer gear, a static load test was performed on the thickness of the SMA mesh washer and the rotation of the gear. Moreover, The microvibration measurement test demonstrated that the SMA mesh washer gear proposed in this study is effective for microvibration attenuation.

  • In Korea, the direction of houses are typically determined by considering the directional orientation and shape of the mountain range rather than ignoring the geographical feature of the mountain range. Traditional villages of Korea are known to have very particular ways of adopting the geomantic surroundings of natural environment. This is very true especially have a high mountain in the back and a lower mountain in front. At the same time, most of the houses tend to prefer south as a man direction so that they can receive more sun light. However, if the mountain range faces north, it will not be easy to determine the directional orientation of houses. This paper, therefore, tries to identify how the houses of villages facing north, direst the orientation. This, the northern village, solves the problem by facing all direction rather than one major direction. The houses of the villages facing north, tend to revise the direction by changing the back mountain(주산) or front mountain(인산) that helps them change the direction towards he range of eastern or western direction. As a result, the houses tend to the direction towards east and wes compared to north and south. The directional orientation of houses was clearly distributed or concentrated by depending of the shape and directional orientation of the mountain range. This kind of research let us know the relationship between the natural north direction, the direction of geomantic surrounding, and the direction of houses in traditional Korean villages.

  • Transmission cross section characteristics as a measure of transmission efficiency has been analyzed numerically for the H-shaped and C-shaped small apertures in the infinite conducting plane when illuminated by a plane wave. It has been found that C-shaped aperture has the larger transmission cross section than that of H-shaped aperture under the condition of the same perforated aperture area. Main attention has been focused on studying the mutual coupling effect between two C-shaped apertures on the transmission cross section characteristic. Parallel configuration which is composed of two C-shaped apertures arranged along the x-axis and collinear configuration which is composed of two C-shaped arrayed along the y-axis have been investigated from the viewpoint of enhanced transmission cross section characteristics.

  • So far, the main threat to South Korea was North Korea. That is why South Korea established a strategy based on the threat of North Korea and most of the budget on defense was used to deter North Korea. Even though the neighboring countries(China, Japan, and Russia) are growing as a real threat with abilities and intentions based on their powerful naval forces, South Korea has not yet been able to establish a strategy that regards neighboring countries as a threat. But the decades-old structural mechanism of the Korean security environment is undergoing a radical change on April 27, 2018, through the South-North summit and the Panmunjom Declaration. Under the changing security environment, South Korea was placed in a complicated dilemma that had to deal with threats of two axes(China), three axes(China, Japan), and four axes(Japan, Russia). If the one axis threat(North Korea) is dominated by land threats, the second, third and fourth axis threats are threats from the sea. This paper analyzed the maritime strategy of Korea within the framework of maritime-geopolitics, in other words recognition and expansion of the sphere of maritime. I have designed that the maritime defense space that we can deny from threats is divided into three lines of defense: 1 line (radius 3,000km), 2 lines (2,000km), and 3 lines (1,000km). The three defense zones of the three lines were defined as an active defense(1 line), defensive offense(2 line), active offense(3 line). The three defense zones of the three lines were defined as the sphere of core maritime, As a power to deny the sphere of core maritime, it was analyzed as a maneuvering unit, a nuclear-powered submarine, the establishment of missile strategy, and the fortification of islands station. The marine strategy of South Korea with these concepts and means was defined as 'Offensive Maritime Denial Strategy'.

  • A compact imaging spectrometer (COMIS) for use in the STSAT3 microsatellite is currently under development. It is scheduled to be launched into a low Sun-synchronous Earth orbit (${\sim}700km$) by the end of 2010. COMIS was inspired by the success of CHRIS, which is a small hyperspectral imager developed for the ESA microsatellite PROBA. COMIS is designed to achieve nearly equivalent imaging capabilities of CHRIS in a smaller (65 mm diameter and 4.3 kg mass) and mechanically superior (in terms of alignment and robustness) package. Its main operational goal will be the imaging of Earth's surface and atmosphere with ground sampling distances of ${\sim}30m$ at the $18{\sim}62$ spectral bands ($4.0{\sim}1.05{\mu}m$). This imaging will be used for environmental monitoring, such as the in-land water quality monitoring of Paldang Lake, which is located next to Seoul, South Korea. The optics of COMIS consists of two parts: imaging telescope and dispersing relay optics. The imaging telescope, which operates at an f-ratio of 4.6, forms an image (of Earth's surface or atmosphere) onto an intermediate image plane. The dispersion relay optics disperses the image and relay it onto a CCD plane. All COMIS lenses and mirrors are spherical and are made from used silica exclusively. In addition, the optics is designed such that the optical axis of the dispersed image is parallel to the optical axis of the telescope. Previous efforts focused on manufacturing ease, alignment, assembly, testing, and improved robustness in space environments.

  • This paper presents a more general model for T-shaped combined footings that support two columns aligned on a longitudinal axis and each column provides an axial load and two orthogonal moments. This model can be applied to the following conditions: (1) without restrictions on its sides, (2) a restricted side and (3) two opposite sides restricted. This model considers the linear soil pressure. The recently published works have been developed for a restricted side and for two opposite sides restricted by Luévanos-Rojas et al. (2018a, b). The current model considers the uniform pressure distribution because the position of the resultant force coincides with the center of gravity of the surface of the footing in contact with the soil in direction of the longitudinal axis where the columns are located. This paper shows three numerical examples. Example 1 is for a T-shaped combined footing with a limited side (one column is located on the property boundary). Example 2 is for a T-shaped combined footing with two limited opposite sides (the two columns are located on the property boundary). Example 3 is for a T-shaped combined footing with two limited opposite sides, one column is located in the center of the width of the upper flange (b1/2=L1), and other column is located at a distance half the width of the strip from the free end of the footing (b2/2=b-L1-L). The main advantage of this work over other works is that this model can be applied to T-shaped combined footings without restrictions on its sides, a restricted side and two opposite sides restricted. It also shows the deficiencies of the current model over the new model.
