In order to study correlation of the propeller cavitation performance between a full-scale ship and a model ship for the MR Tanker, the full-scale ship and the model tests were conducted. The full-scale ship test is composed of cavitation observation, pressure fluctuation and noise measurements, which are conducted using 2 observation windows and 8 pressure transducers installed inside the full-scale ship above the propeller. The model test in the Large Cavitation Tunnel(LCT) was conducted at the same conditions as that of the full-scale ship and its results are compared with those of the full-scale ship. Through the model-ship correlation analysis, it is considered that the experimental technique for the MR Tanker class ship was verified in LCT.
This paper is concerned with an experimental research to control of random vibration caused by external loads specially in cable-stayed bridges which tend to be structurally flexible. For the vibration control, we produced a model structure modelled on Seohae Grand Bridge, and we designed a shear type MR damper. On the center of its middle span, we placed a shear type MR damper which was to control its vibration and also acquire its structural responses such as displacement and acceleration at the same site. The experiments concerning controlling vibration were performed according to a variety of theories including un-control, passive on/off control, and clipped-optimal control. Its control performance was evaluated in terms of the absolute maximum displacements, RMS displacements, the absolute maximum accelerations, RMS accelerations, and the total power required to control the bridge which differ from each different experiment method. Among all the methods applied in this paper, clipped-optimal control method turned out to be the most effective to reduces of displacements, accelerations, and external power. Finally, It is proven that the clipped-optimal control method was effective and useful in the vibration control employing a semi-active devices such MR damper.
When viewed using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, invasive materials inside the human body, in many cases, severely distort the MR image of human tissues. The degree of the MR image distortion increases in proportion not only to the difference in the susceptibility between the invasive material and the human tissue, but also to the intensity of the magnetic field induced by the MRI system. In this study, by blending paramagnetic Ti particles with diamagnetic graphite, we synthesized $Ti_{100-x}C_x$ composites that can reduce the artifact in the MR image under the high-strength magnetic field. Of the developed composites, $Ti_{70}C_{30}$ showed the magnetic susceptibility of ${\chi}=67.6{\times}10^{-6}$, which corresponds to 30% of those of commercially available Ti alloys, the lowest reported in the literature. The level of the MR image distortion in the vicinity of the $Ti_{70}C_{30}$ composite insert was nearly negligible even under the high magnetic field of 4.7 T. In this paper, we reported on a methodology of designing new structural materials for bio-applications, their synthesis, experimental confirmation and measurement of MR images.
Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are capable of changing their rheological properties under the application of external fields. When MR fluids operate in the so-called squeeze mode, in which displacement levels are limited to a few millimetres but there are large forces, they have many potential applications in vibration isolation. This paper presents an experimental and a numerical investigation of the performance of an MR fluid under tensile and compressive loads and oscillatory squeeze-flow. The performance of the fluid was found to depend dramatically on the strain direction. The shape of the stress-strain hysteresis loops was affected by the strength of the applied field, particularly when the fluid was under tensile loading. In addition, the yield force of the fluid under the oscillatory squeeze-flow mode changed almost linearly with the applied electric or magnetic field. Finally, in order to shed further light on the mechanism of the MR fluid under squeeze operation, computational fluid dynamics analyses of non-Newtonian fluid behaviour using the Bingham-plastic model were carried out. The results confirmed superior fluid performance under compressive inputs.
In this paper, implementation of obstacle avoidance of a nonholonomic mobile robot in unstructured environment is introduced. To avoid obstacles, first, a reference collision-free path for the MR is generated off-line using HJB-based optimal path planning method. A controller is designed using integrator backstepping method for tracking the generated reference path. To implement the designed controller, a control system are needed and composed of camera system and PIC-based controller. The workspace is observed by a ceiling-mounted USB camera as part of an un-calibrated camera system. Thus the positional information of the MR is updated frequently and the MR can get the useful inputs for its tracking controller. The whole control system is realized by integrating a computer with PIC-based microprocessor using wireless communication: the image processing control module and path planning module serve as high level computer control while the device control serves as low level PIC microprocessor control. The simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the designed control system.
Long steel stay cables, which are mainly used in cable-stayed bridges, are easy to vibrate because of their low inherent damping characteristics. A lot of methods for vibration reduction of stay cables have been developed, and several techniques of them have been implemented to real structures, though each has its limitations. Recently, it was reported that smart (i.e. semi-active) dampers can potentially achieve performance levels nearly the same as comparable active devices with few of the detractions. Some numerical and experimental studies on the application of smart damping systems employing an MR fluid damper, which is one of the most promising smart dampers, to a stay cable were carried out; however, most of the previous studies considered only one specific control algorithm in which they are interested. In this study, the performance verification of MR fluid damper-based smart damping systems for mitigating vibration of stay cables by considering the four commonly used semi-active control algorithms, such as the control algorithm based on Lyapunov stability theory, the maximum energy dissipation algorithm, the modulated homogeneous friction algorithm and the clipped-optimal control algorithm, is systematically carried out to find the most appropriate control strategy for the cable-damper system.
Vibration is an undesirable phenomenon in a dynamic system like lightly damped aerospace structures and active vibration control has gradually been employed to suppress vibration. The objective of the current investigation is to introduce an active torsional magneto-rheological (MR) fluid based damper for vibration control of a typical nose landing gear. They offer the adaptability of active control devices without requiring the associated large power sources. A torsional damper is designed and developed based on Bingham plastic shear flow model. The numerical analysis is carried out to estimate the damping coefficient and damping force. The designed damper is fabricated and an experimental setup is also established to characterize the damper and these results are compared with the analytical results. A typical FE model of Nose landing gear is developed to study the effectiveness of the damper. Open loop response analysis has been carried out and response levels are monitored at the piston tip of a nose landing gear for various loading conditions without damper and with MR-damper as semi-active device. The closed-loop full state feedback control scheme by the pole-placement technique is also applied to control the landing gear instability of an aircraft.
In this paper, a new opposition based charged system search (CSS) is proposed to be used as a parameter identification of highly nonlinear semi-active magneto-rheological damper. By replacing the opposition particles with current solutions, the mentioned strategy is used to enhance the search space and to increase the exploration of CSS. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a nonlinear modified Bouc-Wen model of MR damper is considered to find its parameters, and compare it with those achieved from experimental model of MR damper. Also, by exploiting the sensitivity analysis and using the importance vector, the less importance parameters in the Bouc-Wen model are eliminated which makes the MR damper model simpler. Results demonstrate the new proposed algorithm (OBLCSS) has a high ability to tackle highly nonlinear problems. Based on the results of the α importance vector, a simplified model is proposed and its parameters are identified by using the presented OBLCSS algorithm. The simplified proposed model also has a high capability of estimating damper responses.
Experimental Investigations were carried out to remove NOx, SOx simultaneously from simulated flue gas[NO(0.02%)-SO$_2$(0.08%)-$CO_2$-Air-$N_2$] by using a plasma chemical reaction. Ammonia gas(14.81%) balanced by argon was diluted by all and was Introduced to mall simulated flue gas duct through NH$_3$ Injection system which is in downstream of reactor. The NH$_3$ molecular ratio(MR) was determined based on (NH3) to [NO+S0$_2$]. MR is 1, 1.5, 2.5. The NOx removal rate significantly increased with increasing NaOH bubble quantity. The SO$_2$ removal rate was not significantly effected by applied voltage, however it fairly Increased with increasing NH$_3$ molecule ratio. By-product aerosol particle was observed by XRD(X-ray diffraction) after sampling, The NOx, SOx removal rates, when H2O vapour bubbled by dry all was injected to plasma reactor, were better than those of other cases. When aqueous NaOH solution(20%) bubbled by 2.5( ι /min) of $N_2$ and 0.5 ( ι /min) NH$_3$(MR=1.5) were injected to simulated flue gas, The NOx. SOx removal rate was 95 ~ 100[%]
