Purpose: Metabolic liver disease (MLD) often progresses to life-threatening conditions. This study intends to describe the outcomes of liver transplantation (LTx) for MLD at a living donor-dominant transplantation center where potentially heterozygous carrier grafts are employed. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the medical records of 54 patients with MLD who underwent LTx between November 1995 and February 2012 at Asan Medical Center in Seoul, Korea. The cumulative graft and patient survival rates were analyzed according to patient age, and living or deceased donor LTx. Recurrence of the original disease was also investigated. Results: The post-transplant cumulative patient survival rates at one, five, and 10 years were 90.7%, 87.5% and 87.5%, and the graft survival rates were 88.8%, 85.5%, and 85.5%, respectively. There were no differences in the patient survival rates according to the recipient age, human leukocyte antigen matching, and living or deceased donor LTx. There were also no differences in the patient survival rates between the MLD and the non-MLD groups for children. Recurrence of the original metabolic disease was not observed in any patient during the follow-up period. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the living donor-dominant transplantation program is well-tolerated in MLD without recurrence of the original MLD using all types of transplantation.
The aim of this descriptive study was to identify the impact of chronic illness on children and their families. Mothers of 177 children with chronic disease were recruited from aged one to 17 years hospitalizing the pediatric nursing unit at one university hospital. 28 questions. a self-complete maternal questionnaire developed by researchers based on literatures and 'The Impact of Childhood Illness Scale' (Hoare & Russell, 1995) assess four aspects of the child's and family's lifestyle with two dimensions for each question. the frequency of the problem and its importance of concern that it cause. In the data analysis. Pearson correlation coefficients and analysis of variance were used to test any association and a statistical comparisons. between individual variables and the impact on child's and family's lifestyle. The results were as follows: 1) There were the higher mean scores on the importance dimension than on the frequency dimension on total impact on child's and family's lifestyle. On the importance dimension. mothers had much higher levels of concern about impact on child's development and adjustment among subscales. On the frequency dimension, mothers had much higher levels of concern about impact on the family daily living on subscales. 2) The impact on child's and family's lifestyle related on individual variables were: (1) On the importance dimension. there was statistically significant low in the impact on child's development and adjustment among subscales in older parent group compared with it of younger parent group. (2) On the frequency dimension. there were statistically significant high in the impact on child's development and adjustment among subscales in the children with leukemia or cancer compared with it of the other children who had another chronic illnesses. And there were statistically significant high in the impact on child's development and adjustment among subscales in less than high school educated mothers compared with it of mothers who was educated college level. (3) On the frequency dimension. There were statistically significant high in the impact on family's daily living among subscales and total impact on child's and family's lifestyle in female children. (4) There was positive correlation between impact on parents daily living and frequency of child's hospitalization on the frequency dimension. but there was negative correlation between the two variables on the importance dimension. (5) There was positive correlation between impact of chronic illness and its treatment and duration of child's hospitalization on the frequency dimension. In conclusion. these results were reflected by the high level of concerns about impact on child's development and adjustment although mothers had frequently responded about the impact on the family daily living. We suggest consistent intervening program that help the family empowering to make children live with and adjust to their chronic illnesses from the point of diagnosis and after discharge from the hospital. We also suggest these results can be utilized as a useful data in the practice of home health nursing for children who have chronic illnesses and their families.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between attentional networks according to sex and reflection-impulsivity in the cognitive styles of young children. The subjects of the study were 78 5-year-old children from the kindergarten or daycare center in Busan(with 40 in the reflection group, and 38 in the impulsivity group). The tests were conducted by using the Mating Familiar Test and the Attentional Network Test for young children. The study has used two independent t-tests to find out the differences between attentional networks according to sex, and reflection-impulsivity in the cognitive styles of young children. The results of this study were as follows. First, the boys with reflection cognitive style were significantly slower than the girls with the same style(t=2.18, p<.05). Second, young children with reflection cognitive style were significantly faster in the case of alerting effects than those with impulsivity cognitive style(t=-2.53, p<.05). The young children with reflection cognitive style were slower than those with impulsivity cognitive style in the case of orienting effect(t=2.04, p<.05). Children with a combination of both conflict effect and reflection cognitive style were significantly faster than those with impulsivity cognitive style(t=-2.89, p<.01). The results of the study suggested that there was a difference between attentional networks according to sex and reflection-impulsivity cognitive styles of young children.
This study analyzes whether children's independent picture book reading affects their reading activities and whether the mother-child interaction during this reading improves their reading activities. The study provides basic data and policy implications for developing children's reading ability. Data were collected from a sample of 192 children aged 4 and 5 in Seoul and Anseong, where a survey of their mothers as well as their nursery school teachers was conducted. Variables of interest were analyzed through a correlation analysis and a hierarchical regression analysis, First, children's reading recognized by their mothers was bipolarized as "very high" or "very low". Second, children's reading activity had a significant positive relationship with independent reading, indicating that children active in independent reading were likely to develop their, reading ability. Third, in addition to independent reading, the mother-child interaction had a significant positive effect on children's-reading ability, indicating the importance of the mother's role in developing the child's reading ability.
This study examines the effects of parental leadership and verbal control modes on preschool children's leadership. The sample included 202 children between the ages of 4 and 5 and their mothers, and data were collected using an index of parental leadership, an index of parental verbal control, and an inventory of preschool children's leadership. A statistical analysis was conducted using a t-test, a correlation analysis, and a multiple regression analysis. According to the results, there were significant differences in preschool children's leadership according to the child's age. According to a correlation analysis, parental leadership and verbal person-oriented control modes had significant positive correlations with preschool children's leadership, and imperative control and position-oriented control modes had negative correlations. In addition, parental leadership and verbal control modes were significant predictors of preschool children's leadership. In particular, parents' communication skill, relationship skill, group activity skill, person-oriented control mode, and position-oriented control mode were significant predictors of preschool children's leadership.
This study was carried out to investigate the nutritional status of physically handicapped children with cerebral palsy in order to contribute to their welfare by studying their healthy status, nutrient intake, daily energy expenditure, and living environment. The survey was conducted at two rehabilitation institutions from May 25 to June 30, 1981. A special questionnaire was designed to investigate the living environment. The 24 hr. recall method was used in evaluation the nutrient intake of 67 children. Anthropometric measurement was made of height, weight, chestgirth, upper-arm circumference, and triceps skinfold thickness. The biochemical status of the children with cerebral palsy was assessed with measurement of hemoglobin and hematocrit. The results may be summarized as follows : 1. The children with cerebral palsy, the intakes of all nutrients except vitamin A, thiamin, and ascorbic acid were lower than Korean recommend dietary allowances (1980). They had significantly higher intakes of vitamin A and calcium than the normal children, but the calcium intake was low as 62% of the Korea RDA. 2. All the children with cerebral palsy were very short and low weight in comparison with the accepted standards, but chestgirth was above the accepted standards for Korean school children. 3. The average hemoglobin value was 12.2gm%, hematocrit 39.3%, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) 31.1%. 4. The possible etiological factors of cerebral palsy were, prenatal factors 16%, natal 44.9%, postnatal 27.5%, and unknown 11.6%. Eighty four percent of the children showed their first symptoms within the first year after birth. 5. Thirty percent of the parents said that the handicapped children lead to marital problems, and 84.1% of the parents mentioned that medical expenses for the children influenced their family finances.
This paper examined the effects of children's interests and attitudes toward mother's native culture and use of mother's native language on satisfaction of the mother-child relationship in multi-cultural families. Data from the 2012 National Survey of Multi-cultural Families demonstrate that for children aged between 9 and 12 years, their fluency and desire to speak well in the mother's native language as well as father's encouragement for using the mother's native language at home were positively associated with satisfaction of the mother-child relationship. For those aged between 13 and 18 years, mother's nationality (i.e. Southeast or South Asia) was negatively related with mother-child relationship satisfaction. Both mother's and children' communication skills, children's interests in mother's native culture, pride for mother being a foreigner, and desire to speak well in the mother's native language were positively associated with mother-child relationship satisfaction. Therefore, there is a need for foreign wives to be educated in Korean language and culture as well as opportunities for children to learn their mother's native culture and language.
「아동복지법 제16조 1항」에 의거 아동의 연령이 만18세가 되면 퇴소조치 되는 등 전국적으로는 매년 보호종료아동이 2,500명 가량 발생하고 있다. 하지만 중앙정부와 지자체의 효율적인 지원태세를 갖추기 위해서는 보호종료아동에 관한 명확한 실태조사가 필요한 바, 금번 연구에서 천안시에 거주 중인 보호종료아동의 주거, 건강, 교육, 취업, 사회적 관계 등 가장 기초적인 조사를 실시하였다. 결과적으로 전국 보호종료아동 대비 천안시 거주 보호종료아동의 주거와 사회적 관계는 양호한 것으로 나타났으나 정신과 질환비율이 높거나 취업, 창업비율이 상대적으로 낮게 나타나 이에 대한 관계기관과의 면밀한 협력체계 구축이 시급한 것으로 나타났다.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of father's child rearing behavior and child rearing involvement perceived by their children to children's self-esteem and school adjustment. The subjects were 300 elementary school children selected from two elementary schools in Incheon area. The instruments included the father's child rearing behavior index, father's child rearing involvement index, children's self-esteem inventory, and children's school adjustment inventory. The statistics used from this data were correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. This study showed that father's child rearing behaviors of autonomy, achievement, concern and affection behavior were positively correlated to children's general, social, family and school self-esteem. Correlation analysis also indicated that a father's child rearing involvement, that is family activities, day to day guidance, household affairs and home education involvement were positively correlated to children's general, social and family self-esteem, and school self-esteem was positively correlated to family activities and day to day guidance involvement. Father's child rearing behaviors also indicated positive correlations with children's teachers, friends, studies and rule adjustments. A father's child rearing involvement also indicated positive correlations with all of the schools adjustment variables. The relationships between children's self-esteem and school adjustment indicated positive high correlations in all sub-variables. It was also found that autonomy behavior, family activities involvement, affection behavior and concern behavior were significant predictors of children's self-esteem. Also, day to day guidance involvement and family activities involvement were significant predictors of children's school adjustment, but in addition to children's self-esteem variables, children's social, school, general, and family self-esteem were significant predictors of children's school adjustment.
Purpose : In this study, we applied a computerized cognitive rehabilitation program (CoTras-C) for children with cerebral palsy. Research was conducted to investigate the impact of upper limb function, sensory function, and activities of daily living. Methods : The study period lasted 10 weeks from October 2019 to December 2019. The study subjects were 12 subjects according to the selection criteria, and a computerized cognitive rehabilitation program (CoTras-C) was conducted twice a week for 30 minutes before and after the application of basic occupational therapy. Results : As a result of the computerized cognitive rehabilitation program, scores of upper limb function (QUEST), sensory function (SSP-2), and daily life activity (WeeFIM) were significantly improved (p>.05). From the result of examining the motor area, improvement in fine-motor function and protective extension through touch pad or controller operation was found. It also showed improvement in activities of daily living including motor and activities of daily living including social cognition. In the sensory function evaluation, it was not significant in movement sensitivity. Significant differences were shown in the items excluding olfactory/taste sensitivity. Conclusion : The application of the computerized cognitive rehabilitation program (CoTras-C) showed significant results in upper limb function, sensory function, and daily life activities of children with brain lesions. Based on these results, future studies need to generalize the study by expanding the age or population of children with brain lesions, or by expanding the diversity of diseases and environments.
