  • The purpose of this research is to analyze priority of the elderly user interface (UI) evaluation criteria based on user's lifestyle. Since the elderly population will occupy over 20% of the all Korean population in the near future, we need to know older users' needs and information because elderly users will be main customers in the super-aged society. This paper investigated the definition of elderly users and characteristics demographically, socio-economically, and physically/cognitively. A total of 238 questionnaires from older users were analyzed based on a segmentation table for the elderly developed by the previous study. According to factor analysis and cluster analysis, 6 types of lifestyle and 4 groups of the elderly users were classified, respectively. The priority of UI evaluation criteria for large electronic home appliances and mobile products was analyzed by analyses of variance (ANOVAs). The results indicated that the priority of (physical, emotional, and cognitive) UI criteria was significantly different among elderly users' lifestyles for both home appliances and mobile products. Consequently, the results of this study may help the company develop some competitive silver products and give higher satisfaction to the elderly users by suggesting different priority of UI evaluation criteria according to the target elderly group. The results may also contribute to revitalize national economy by significantly increasing senior market shares.

  • This research investigates and characterizes lifestyles and housing preferences of Korean-American Baby Boomers in the USA, and proposes future housing design and planning directions to meet their needs. A questionnaire survey was conducted from June to September 2012 examining lifestyles and preferred characteristics of postretirement homes. We targeted Korean-Americans born from 1955 to 1963 in either Korea or the USA who currently reside in New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids, and San Francisco. To analyze the 247 responses, we employed factor analysis, cluster analysis, one-way ANOVA, and crosstabs. Respondents preferred three-bedroom, singlefamily housing types with a size of 26-35 pyong, favoring city outskirts or suburbs over urban areas. Four groups having different lifestyle types were identified: innovators, believers, fashion experiencers, and makers. Housing preference differed depending on lifestyle types. The 'innovator' group desired homes 56 pyong or larger, while the other groups preferred 26-36 pyong. The four lifestyle groups did not show statistically significant differences in most of preferred housing features, community facilities, or indoor environmental characteristics. Each group still showed slightly different preferences in some housing planning characteristics, which future planners can refer to when providing postretirement homes for them.

  • The Lifestyle-DEPER (Decision, Execution, Personal Factors, Environment, Resources) model explains lifestyle formation. Lifestyles are shaped through the decision, execution, and habituation stages. Factors influencing the establishment of a lifestyle are categorized as environmental, resource, and personal. The environment encompasses our surroundings and social, physical, cultural, and virtual environments. Resources refer to what individuals possess, such as health, time, economic, and social resources. Personal factors include competencies, needs, and values. At the lifestyle establishment stage, each of these factors influences a different stage. These collective processes are referred to as events, encompassing both personal and social events. Health-related lifestyle factors include physical activity, nutrition, social relationships, and occupational participation. These are the goals of lifestyle intervention. The intervention strategy based on the Lifestyle-DEPER model, called KEEP (Knowledge, Evaluation, Experience, Plan), is a comprehensive approach to promoting a healthy lifestyle by considering lifestyle formation stages and their influencing factors. This study introduces the Lifestyle-DEPER model and presents a lifestyle intervention strategy (KEEP) to promote health. Further research is required to validate the practicality of the model after applying interventions based on the lifestyle construction model.

  • Securing fire safety using only fire-fighting facilities is difficult because causes of modern fire vary, such as architectural structures and building use patterns. In order for fire safety to be guaranteed by enacting and revising fire regulations reflecting the fire hazard characteristics and user's characteristics, the introduction of fire influence evaluation (fire risk assessment) system needs to be considered in a timely manner to be adopted but unfortunately two attempts before have failed. In this study, a fire case of urban lifestyle housing was surveyed to introduce a fire influence evaluation system and a field survey on the actual condition of the 414 urban lifestyle housing buildings and fire & evacuation simulation results of one representative building in Suyoung-gu and Nam-gu District of Busan Metropolitan City were analyzed. The necessity, procedures and implementation method of fire influence evaluation system were questioned and tested by the professional fire experts, fire officers and firefighters and architects. On the basis of these facts, introduction of (fire influence evaluation system) should be absolutely adopted and the fire department and fire regulation are eligible to implement the system. Therefore, fire regulation needs to be enacted or revised in accordance with the new fire environment and fire safety system that needs to be built up. Accordingly, aggressive promotion through public hearings on the necessity of fire impact assessments, consensus among departments and fostering experts to carry out fire influence evaluation system will be the core.
