  • The late Professor Lee CB (1915~1967) was one of the pioneers in the early stages of thoracic surgery in Korea while he was in charge of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Seoul National University hospital as the first director from 1957 until he died of liver cancer in 1967. He was a graduate from the old Seoul National University, and he dedicated himself to the field of lung surgery after he joined the army during the Korean War, which broke out in 1950. Among his many contributions to pulmonary surgery, he performed the first partial lung resection in Korea in 1953. His lecture notes were recently found. These lecture notes for medical students were written by hand in late 1950s, Considering the content and form of the lecture notes, they are thought to have very significant historical value. The lecture notes were a total of 277 pages on general thoracic surgery and cardiovascular surgery with 75 self-drawn figures. This study was intended to facilitate a better understanding of the history of thoracic surgery in Korea, and especially for young thoracic surgeons. These notes may well contribute to the field of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in Korea.

  • Network expansion has been an inevitable method for most traffic equilibrium assignments to consider intersection movements such as intersection delays. The drawback of network expansion is that because it dramatically increases network sizes to emulate possible directional movements as corresponding links, not only is complexities for building network amplified, but computational performance is shrunk. This paper Proposes a new variational inequality formulation for a user-optimal traffic equilibrium assignment model to explicitly consider directional delays without building expanded network structures. In the formulation, directional delay functions are directly embedded into the objective function, thus any modification of networks is not required. By applying a vine-based shortest Path algorithm into the diagonalization algorithm to solve the problem, it is additionally demonstrated that various loop-related movements such as U-Turn, P-Turn, etc., which are frequently witnessed near urban intersections, can also be imitated by blocking some turning movements of intersections. The proposed formulation expects to augment computational performance through reduction of network-building complexities.

  • Twenty four weaner lambs, eight each of Marwari, Patanwadi and Merino${\times}$Patanwadi breeds (9.9 to 10.8 kg) were randomly divided into two dietary treatments on body weight basis Viz. $T_1$-conventional (Maize-38%, GN Cake-25%, Rice Polish-24%, Jaggery solution-10%, Mineral mixture-3%) and $T_2$-supplemented non conventional group (GN Cake-25%, Rice Polish-14%, Mango seed kernel-25%, Babul Pods chuni-23%, Jaggery solution-10%, Mineral mixture-3%). The Jaggery solution was prepared by mixing 6.5 kg Jaggery and 3.5 kg water. The average final body weight at the end of the experiment was recorded to be $19.33{\pm}0.76$ and $19.72{\pm}0.8kg$ in conventional and non-conventional groups, respectively. The total dry matter intake (DMI) during the entire experiment period was recorded to be $89.56{\pm}5.19$ and $95.08{\pm}1.06$ (kg/head) and $532.83{\pm}9.94$ and $566.75{\pm}10.49g/d$ in conventional and nonconventional groups, respectively. The body weight gain and body measurements did not influenced by diet. The ration effect was found to be significant when the DMI was expressed in terms of g/d. The crude protein (CP) and digestible crude protein (DCP) intake/head and per kg gain observed during experiment under conventional and non-conventional treatment group did not differ from each other. However, the total digestible nutrients (TDN) intake per kg gain was significantly (p<0.05) higher in supplemented non-conventional group. The intake values of DCP and TDN were more or less in agreement with Indian Council Agricultural Research (1985) recommendations. The estimated total feed cost (Rs./animal) for experimental lambs was $274.16{\pm}8.57$ and $242.67{\pm}5.10$ in conventional and non- group, respectively. The non-conventional group had significantly (p<0.05) lower feed cost (11.6%). The return as percent of feed cost and feed cost/kg dressed weight were $92.89{\pm}5.58$ (%) and Rs. $35.40{\pm}1.11$ and $122.61{\pm}5.06$ (%) and Rs.$30.47{\pm}1.71$ in conventional and non-conventional group (p<0.05), respectively which is the reflection of significantly lower total feed cost incurred during feeding in non-conventional group. Lambs fed non-conventional based diet had similar live weights as those fed conventional diets but costed less money to achieve those weights.

  • Influence of several dehydration treatments on original structure and water behavior in the process of drying were investigated employing three hawaiian volcanic ash soils and four synthetic minerals. These three soils were developed under different rainfall condition and contained three different amount of amorphous materials in them. Measurement of water losses by oven drying at $105^{\circ}C$, $P_2O_5$ drying, freeze drying, and critical point drying revealed that more water losses were noted by oven drying than by three other drying techniques and the differences of water losses between oven and $P_2O_5$-drying were closely related to amoun: of amorphous materials in them, showing the order of Kaiwiki > Hilo > Kawaihae. This indicates that dehydration of amorphous materials by elevated temperature ($105^{\circ}C$) excluded water beyond that in the adsorbed (hygroscopic) state. The effect of dehydration treatments on initial structure was visualized by scanning electron microscopy. The micrographs showed that oven-and $P_2O_5$-dried samples formed into large mass of sub-angular blocky, dense, and closed crumbs, while the freeze dried and critical point dried samples resulted in less shrinkage, and small, fluffy and open spongy structure. However, critical point drying technique produced bulkier, softer, and greater open structure samples than even freeze drying. Additional Index Words: original structure, synthetic minerals, critical point drying, $P_2O_5$ drying. 1. • This paper develops a theory of the demand for insurance. The present model incorporates insurance demand time value of insurance premium, and demand for listless and risky assets simultaneously within the expected utility framework. For a special case of CARA, an insurance decision can be made separately from other portfolio decisions. However, in general, the interactions of both decisions cannot be ignored even when insurable and speculative risks are stochastically independent. In particular, the role of risky investment in hedging insurable risk is demonstrated and it is shown that this role cannot be duplicated by an insurance contract. When the investment decision is made simultaneously with the insurance decision, some of the classic theory on insurance should be modified. As an example, the authors characterize the sufficient conditions, under which the Bernoulli criteria (without and with premium loadings) hold or are violated in terms of the net gain of risky investment, the net cost of insurance, and the stochastic relationship between insurable and speculative risks. The authors interpret the results using the Rothschild and Stiglitz's (1970) notion of 'increase in riskiness'.

  • Stamped-Roof Tiles, the characteristics of Baekje Tiles are one of the most frequently excavated tiles in Iksan. Considering the types and amount of excavation of the Stamped-Roof Tiles unearthed in Iksan area, it seems that these are closely related with a Royal family. The tiles might be manufactured by a particular gorup of file maker since they are produced with same way. Referring the Ganji carved in the Stamped-Roof Tiles, I suppose that the tiles were produced and used in two time periods, the time around enthronement of The King Mu and the second quarter of the 7th century around Gichuk, AD. 629. In addition, Convex Tiles used in Wanggung-ri Site and Mireuk Site was also produced in same time as the Stamped-Roof Tiles, considering there pattern and the amount of excavation. The social background of tile production was analogized based on the technology and the time of the tile manufacture as well as the characteristics of the Stamped-Roof Tiles which represent the Obu and the Ohang. The production of the tiles was supported by Obu which aided the King Mu-oriented construction project the economic capacity of the Royal family was not enough to promote. The tile production system was totally controled by the Royal family and the inspector, neither producer nor donator, examined the quantitation of the tiles and generated the imprint of a seal with the Stamped-Roof Tiles.
