  • Bahunia racemosa family, Caesalpiniaceae, is one of the precious resources of the earth. It has played a significant role in human civilization since ancient times. It is tall sized tree growing throughout India, Ceylon, China, and Timor. The different part of this plant contains β-sitosterol and β-amyrin, flavonols (kaempferol and quercetin) and two coumarins (scopoletin and scopolin), tannins etc. Various part of this plant has great pharmacological potential with a great utility and usage as folklore medicine as analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and antimicrobial activity. This review mainly focus on the exclusive review work on the traditional, phytochemical and pharmacological activities of this plant.

  • In the present study, the hydro alcoholic extract of Moringa concanensis and their different fractions were evaluated for it's anti implantation, abortifacient, estrogenic and antiestrogenic activity. Hydro alcoholic extract of Moringa concanensis has showed potent antiimplantation and abortifacient activity at 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg respectively and marked estrogenic activity when administered individually and anti estrogenic activity was observed when administered along with ethinyl estradiol (1 ${\mu}g/rat/day$) as well as their different fractions of Moringa concanensis showed significant antiimplantation and abortifacient activity at 100 mg/kg. Moreover, all tested fractions showed significant anti estrogenic activity when administered simultaneously with ethinyl estradiol.

  • This paper discusses the inter fiber cohesion in man made and blended yarns. The fiber parameters such as fiber length and fineness influence the cohesion. Studies have been focused on polyester and viscose spun yarns. Though polyester and viscose yarns show similar trend in cohesion, viscose yarns exhibit better cohesion clue to their serrated cross section. Studies on the effect of blend proportion of polyester cotton and polyester viscose yarns reveal that increase of polyester and viscose in the respective blends improve the inter fiber cohesion.

Interband optical properties in wide band gap group-III nitride quantum dots

  • Size dependent emission properties and the interband optical transition energies in group-III nitride based quantum dots are investigated taking into account the geometrical confinement. Exciton binding energy and the optical transition energy in $Ga_{0.9}In_{0.1}N$/GaN and $Al_{0.395}In_{0.605}N$/AlN quantum dots are studied. The largest intersubband transition energies of electron and heavy hole with the consideration of geometrical confinement are brought out. The interband optical transition energies in the quantum dots are studied. The exciton oscillator strength as a function of dot radius in the quantum dots is computed. The interband optical absorption coefficients in GaInN/GaN and AlInN/AlN quantum dots, for the constant radius, are investigated. The result shows that the largest intersubband energy of 41% (10%) enhancement has been observed when the size of the dot radius is reduced from $50{\AA}$ to $25{\AA}$ of $Ga_{0.9}In_{0.1}N$/GaN ($Al_{0.395}In_{0.605}N$/AlN) quantum dot.

  • This paper investigates the influence of raw material and process parameters in spinning that affect the inter fiber cohesion in yams. An instrument has been developed for measuring the minimum twist of cohesion. With regard to the raw material parameters, the influence of different cotton fiber mixings for a given count of yarn is investigated. Also the effect of spinning to varying counts for a given cotton variety is studied. With regard to the process parameters, studies have been carried out to investigate the influence of noil extraction in comber, number of draw frame passages, draft pressure in ring frame and direction of twist. Cohesion improved with increase in the noil extraction percentage in the comber. Increase in the number of draw frame passages also improved the cohesion. Draft pressure in ring frame improved the fiber cohesion in yarn up to a pressure of $2.1kg/cm^2$. Direction of twist had no effect on the cohesion.

Effect of cover cracking on reliability of corroded reinforced concrete structures

  • The reliability of reinforced concrete structures is frequently compromised by the deterioration caused by reinforcement corrosion. Evaluating the effect caused by reinforcement corrosion on structural behaviour of corrosion damaged concrete structures is essential for effective and reliable infrastructure management. In lifecycle management of corrosion affected reinforced concrete structures, it is difficult to correctly assess the lifecycle performance due to the uncertainties associated with structural resistance deterioration. This paper presents a stochastic deterioration modelling approach to evaluate the performance deterioration of corroded concrete structures during their service life. The flexural strength deterioration is analytically predicted on the basis of bond strength evolution caused by reinforcement corrosion, which is examined by the experimental and field data available. An assessment criterion is defined to evaluate the flexural strength deterioration for the time-dependent reliability analysis. The results from the worked examples show that the proposed approach is capable of evaluating the structural reliability of corrosion damaged concrete structures.

Nonlinear identification of Bouc-Wen hysteretic parameters using improved experience-based learning algorithm

  • In this paper, an improved experience-based learning algorithm (EBL), termed as IEBL, is proposed to solve the nonlinear hysteretic parameter identification problem with Bouc-Wen model. A quasi-opposition-based learning mechanism and new updating equations are introduced to improve both the exploration and exploitation abilities of the algorithm. Numerical studies on a single-degree-of-freedom system without/with viscous damping are conducted to investigate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed algorithm. A laboratory test of seven lead-filled steel tube dampers is presented and their hysteretic parameters are also successfully identified with normalized mean square error values less than 2.97%. Both numerical and laboratory results confirm that, in comparison with EBL, CMFOA, SSA, and Jaya, the IEBL is superior in nonlinear hysteretic parameter identification in terms of convergence and accuracy even under measurement noise.

Swelling Controlled Delivery of Antibiotic from a Hydrophilic Macromolecular Matrix with Hydrophobic Moieties

  • A hydrophilic macromolecular network containing hydrophobic moieties has been prepared by free radical copolymerization of acrylamide and styrene in the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and its potential as controlled drug delivery carrier was evaluated with tetracycline as a model antibiotic drug. The amount of drug was assayed spectrophotometrically. The network was characterized by optical microscopy, infra-red spectroscopy and structural parameters such as average molecular weight between cross1inks ($M_c$), cross1ink density (q) and number of elastically effective chains ($V_e$) were evaluated. It was found that with increasing concentration of PVA, ST and MBA in the hydrogel, the release rate initially increases but after definite concentrations of the above components the release rate falls. In the case of AM, release rate constantly decreases with increasing AM concentration in the hydrogel.

Dehydrodivanillin: Multi-dimensional NMR Spectral Studies, Surface Morphology and Electrical Characteristics of Thin Films

  • The complete structural characterization of dehydrodivanillin, an important natural product of interest to the food, cosmetics and aroma industries, has been carried out using multi-dimensional NMR spectroscopic techniques, and its previously $reported^{13}$C-NMR values have been reassigned. Dense and granular thin films of dehydrodivanillin have been grown by sublimation under high vacuum and studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), electrical and optical techniques. The transmittance spectra of the films indicate a wide optical band gap of more than 3 eV. Typical J-V characteristics of Glass/ITO/dehydrodivanillin/Al structure exhibited moderate current densities ${\sim}10^{-4}\;A/cm^2$ at voltages > 25 V with an appreciable SCLC mobility of the order of $10^{-6}\;cm^2$/V-s.
