  • A collision avoidance algorithm based on a heuristic graph search and subgoals is presented. The joint angle space is quantized into cells. The evaluation function for a heuristic search is defined by the sum of the distance between the links of a manipulator and middle planes among the obstables and the distance between the end-effector and the subgoals on desired trajectory. These subgoals reduce the combinatorial explosion in the search space. This method enables us to avoid a dead-lock in searching. Its effectiveness has been verified by simulation studies.

  • It is very important to have exact informations on the properties and characteristics of the sintered steel as a new material of machine elements. The bending fatigue tests are performed for the sintered steel bend specimens of various densities 6.6 to 7.0 g/$cm^3$ and the sintered spur gear to consisted of Fe-Cu-C. The fatigue test at a constant stress amplitude is performed by using an electrohydraulic servo-controlled pulsating tester. Consequently, the S-N curves are obtained. The fatigue strength S for fatigue life N of the specimen with the initial length of crack ai is simulated, and they are shown as N-S-A curves. This study investigate the crack growth characteristics by experiments and present crack growth simulation method for sintered gear

  • We studied local anodization on permalloy $(Ni_{80}Fe_{20})$ thin film with an atomic force microscope (AFM), which was performed by applying a voltage between the permalloy sample and conductive AFM tip. Comparing with anodization on Si (100) substrate, nano-structures on the permalloy thin film was fabricated with low processability. In order to improve the processability on the permalloy thin film, we used dot-fabrication method, thatis, a conductive AFM probe was kept at a position on the film during the anodization process.

  • We fabricated new one-dimensional magnetophotonic crystal (1D-MPC) utilizing the second and third photonic band gaps where localized modes existed. Structure of the 1D-MPC was $(Ta_{2}O_{5}/SiO_{2})_{5}/Bi:YIG/(SiO_{2}/Ta_{2}O_{5})_{5}$ with optical thicknesses of 3$\lambda$ /4 for $Ta_{2}O_{5} and $SiO_2$ dielectric layers and $\lambda$ /2 for Bi:YIG defect layer, where $\lambda$ is a wavelength of a localized mode in the second photonic band gap. Faraday rotation at the localized mode in the second photonic band gap was enhanced, which was confirmed by calculation using 4${\times}$4 matrix method.

  • In highly reliable and durable systems, failures due to aging might result in catastrophes. Aging monitoring techniques to prevent catastrophes by predicting such a failure are required. This paper presents a scan-based on-line aging monitoring scheme which monitors aging during normal operation and gives an alarm if aging is detected so that the system users take action before a failure occurs. We illustrate our modified scan chain architecture and aging monitoring control method. Experimental results show our simulation results to verify the functions of the proposed scheme.

  • In order to obtain fundamental knowledge of atomization, the three dimensional unsteady phenomenon of pinch off was numerically studied by developed method. Not only liquid shapes but also velocity distributions of numerical results were compared with corresponding experimental ones. They showed satisfactorily good agreement at least in a qualitative sense. The liquid jet shapes, the pressure and velocity distributions, and the inner flow structures were clarified through the comparisons of distinctly different flow fields due to presence or absence of surface tension. The condition of pinch off, which had close correlation with fluid acceleration at injection, was clearly specified.

  • This paper is concerned with a reaction-diffusion logistic model. In [17], Lou observed that a heterogeneous environment with diffusion makes the total biomass greater than the total carrying capacity. Regarding the ratio of biomass to carrying capacity, Ni [10] raised a conjecture that the ratio has a upper bound depending only on the spatial dimension. For the one-dimensional case, Bai, He, and Li [1] proved that the optimal upper bound is 3. Recently, Inoue and Kuto [13] showed that the supremum of the ratio is infinity when the domain is a multi-dimensional ball. In this paper, we generalized the result of [13] to an arbitrary smooth bounded domain in ℝn, n ≥ 2. We use the sub-solution and super-solution method. The idea of the proof is essentially the same as the proof of [13] but we have improved the construction of sub-solutions. This is the complete answer to the conjecture of Ni.

  • This article presents a straightforward hybrid arch technique for treating residual type B aortic dissecting aneurysms following type A repair (replacement of the ascending aorta) that employs a frozen elephant trunk (FET) straight vascular prosthesis. The debranch-first method involves only cutting and sewing the previous ascending graft, inserting the FET from zone 0, and debranching the arch vessels using a trifurcated graft. This technique is less invasive as it eliminates the need to manipulate the dissected distal arch aneurysm. We successfully applied this technique to 3 patients, with no instances of in-hospital death, stroke, or paraplegia. The debranch-first technique, combined with zone-0 FET insertion, simplifies the redo repair of residual type B aortic dissection.

  • We present a method to estimate a dense and sharp depth map using multiple cameras for the application to flexible video production. A key issue for obtaining sharp depth map is how to overcome the harmful influence of occlusion. Thus, we first propose to selectively use the depth information from multiple cameras. With a simple sort and discard technique, we resolve the occlusion problem considerably at a slight sacrifice of noise tolerance. However, boundary overreach of more textured area to less textured area at object boundaries still remains to be solved. We observed that the amount of boundary overreach is less than half the size of the matching window and, unlike usual stereo matching, the boundary overreach with the proposed occlusion-overcoming method shows very abrupt transition. Based on these observations, we propose a hierarchical estimation scheme that attempts to reduce boundary overreach such that edges of the depth map coincide with object boundaries on the one hand, and to reduce noisy estimates due to insufficient size of matching window on the other hand. We show the hierarchical method can produce a sharp depth map for a variety of images.

  • Bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Bi:YIG, $Bi_{0.5}Y_{2.5}Fe_5O_{12}$) films were deposited with aerosol deposition method and their magnetic and optical properties were investigated as a function of annealing temperature. Since the ceramic films deposited with aerosol deposition method have not a perfect crystal structure due to non-uniform internal stress occurred by mechanical collision during their deposition, the post annealing could be a key process to release its internal stress and to improve its micro structure for optimizing the magnetic and magneto-optic properties of films. The crystallinity of Bi: YIG film was improved with increase of annealing temperature, and the saturation magnetization increased up to 87 emu/cc at $800^{\circ}C$. The Faraday rotation increased up to $1.4deg/{\mu}m$ by annealing at $700^{\circ}C$ around the wavelength of $0.5{\mu}m$. The optical transmittance of the Bi:YIG film was also improved in visible region.
