  • The absorption characteristics of hazardous materials onto human body and defense mechanism differ from each other region within the respiratory tracts, thus adverse health effects of inhaled smokes are associated with not only the concentration but also the location of the particles deposited. In this work, the deposition fraction per surface area and the deposition sites of the smoke particles in human respiratory tracts for each rest and light exercise conditions together with oral and nasal breathing were calculated by using segmental volume tracking method. The results would be used for deriving the amount of absorption of hazardous materials onto human body, thus contribute to the health risk assessments of inhaled fire smokes.

  • Atmospheric environmental problems have a major impact on human health and lifestyle. In humans, inhalation of nitrogen oxides causes respiratory diseases, such as bronchitis. In this paper, thermal analysis of a gas sensor was carried out to design and fabricate a wearable nylon-yarn gas sensor for the detection of NOx gas. In the thermal analysis method, the thermal diffusion process was analyzed while operating the sensors at 40 and 60℃ to secure a temperature range that does not cause thermal runaway due to temperature in the operating environment. Thermal diffusion analysis was performed using the COMSOL software. The thermal analysis results could be useful for analyzing gas adsorption and desorption, as well as the design of gas sensors. The thermal energy diffusion rate increased slightly from 10.05 to 10.1 K/mm as the sensor temperature increased from 40 to 60℃. It was concluded that the sensor could be operated in this temperature range without thermal breakdown.

  • There is an increasing interest in monitoring of specific biomarker for determining progression of a disease or efficacy of a treatment. Conventional method for quantification of specific biomarkers as enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has high material costs, long incubation periods, requires large volume of samples and involves special instruments, which necessitates clinical samples to be sent to a lab. This paper reports on the development of an electrochemical biosensor to measure total immunoglobulin E (IgE), a marker of asthma disease that varies with age, gender, and disease in concentrations from 0.3-1000 ng/mL with consuming 20 µL volume of whole blood sample. The sensor provides rapid, accurate, easy, point-of-care measurement of IgE, also, sequential monitoring of total IgE with ovalbumin (OVA) induced mice is another application of sensor. Taken together, these results provide an alternative way for detection of biomarkers in whole blood with low volumes and long-term ex-vivo assessments for understanding the progression of a disease.

  • Specialized hearing tests for pets are currently in demand. A brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) test is an objective, non-invasive, and practical electrophysiological method that records electric signals from the peripheral auditory system to the brainstem when an auditory stimulation is provided. In veterinary medicine, sedation or anesthesia is essential for a successful examination. In human medicine, research has established the indications for various sedatives, anesthetics, and drugs according to the depth of anesthesia required. However, in veterinary medicine, there are very few comparative studies on propofol or isoflurane, which are the most common anesthetics used. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze the difference in BAER test results between sedation with medetomidine, anesthesia using propofol, and inhalation anesthesia with isoflurane after propofol administration. The test was conducted on four healthy adult dogs. There was no statistically significant difference in latency, interpeak latency, or amplitude between the various drugs. The results suggest that a sedative or anesthetic for the administration of a BAER test can be selected according to the patient's needs.

  • During outages at nuclear power plants, much more care for radiation workers against internal exposure should be ensured given that more hot particles exist relative to the amount during normal operation. If fuel-type hot particles (FTHP) are inhaled, they can cause more severe health risks compared to activation-type hot particles (ATHP), which contain 60Co, due to the alpha-emitting nuclides within FTHPs. The activities of difficult-to-measure nuclides within FTHPs inhaled by workers are inferred by the age-dating technique using a141Ce/144Ce ratio as measured by whole-body counters. However, this method may be limited to outages that last for only a few months due to the short half-life (32.5 days) of 141Ce. We studied the feasibility of utilizing 241Am, a nuclide with a long half-life of 432.6 years, as an alternative to 141Ce. Additionally, we improved the performance of a stand-type whole-body counter for low-energy gamma spectroscopy to meet the criterion (RMSE ≤0.25) specified in ANSI/HPS N13.30-2011 by employing an artificial neural network (ANN). This study can contribute to more rapid and accurate internal dose assessments for workers who have inhaled FTHPs during long-term outages at nuclear power plants.
