We designed the experiments to elucidate the anti-inflammatory effect of low power laser stimulation on acupoint or non-acupoint using arthrogenic solution induced poly arthritis animal model. In order to achieve the experimental purpose, change in body weight paw edema, pathological changes in inflammed pint and the serum interlukin-6 level were measured after arthritis induction in acupoint later stimulated group, non acupoint laser stimulated group and non treated control animal. The results were summerized as follows: 1. The consistent increase in body weight was observed in the normal animal during whole experimental period, while the induction of arthritis significantly suppressed increase in body weight from the 15 day after arthritis induction. Especially, non treated animal group showed more suppressive effect on increase in body weight as compared to that of low power laser stimulated groups (P<0.05). 2. Low power laser stimulation on acupoint (Zusanli) significantly inhibited edema in the left side paw from the 12th day after arthritis induction as compared to that of non treated animals. This suppressive effect on paw edema was maintained until the end of experiment. 3. Laser treatment on acupoint dramatically suppressed the radiological change (i.e. new bone proliferation and soft tissue swelling) caused by arthritis as compared to that of non treated group animals. 4. Low power laser treatment reduced the increase in serum interlukin-6 caused by arthritis induction to levels observed in the normal animals. In conclusion, the results of the present study demonstrated that low power laser stimulation on acupoint has potent anti-inflammatory effect on arthritis. Thus it is recommended that low power laser be used for long term treatment of arthritis induced inflammation. However, further study is necessary to clarify the possible side effect of laser treatment depending upon intensity and duration of stimulation.
The purpose of this study was is to investigate the arthritis treatment and prevention of the effects the herbral administration to experimental animals induces arthritis 4 weeks for medicinal herbs (Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, Acanthopanacis cortex, Achyranthis Radix). To investigate the prevention of histopathological examination and molecular biological examinations for arthritis improvement in vivo New Zealand, white rabbits were divided into a normal (Normal, n = 7), or a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA, n = 7), or a collagenase injection and medicinal herbs (SAA, n = 7). It was confirmed that induced arthritis was treated with Gross examination, and the measurement of average arthritis index (MAI) and improved arthritis by medicinal herbs. TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-$1{\beta}$ were significantly increased in the CIA and SAA groups, compared to the normal group (p < 0.05). MMP-1 and TIMP-2 were significantly increased in the CIA, compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). MMP-1 and TIMP-2 were significantly decreased in the SAA group, compared to the CIA group (p < 0.05). As a result, Herbal administration used in this study might be able to help in the treatment of arthritis induced by inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects, that which can be expected.

Objective. Rebampide is a gastroprotective agent used to treat gastritis. It possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritis effects, but the mechanisms of these effects are not well understood. The objective of this study was to explore mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of rebamipide in inflammatory arthritis. Methods. Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) was induced in DBA/1J mice. DBA/1J mice were immunized with chicken type II collagen, then treated intraperitoneally with rebamipide (10 mg/kg or 30 mg/kg) or vehicle (10% carboxymethylcellulose solution) alone. Seven weeks later, plasma samples were collected. Plasma metabolic profiles were analyzed using ultra performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry-based metabolomics study and metabolite biomarkers were identified through multivariate data analysis. Results. Low dose rebamipide treatment reduced the clinical arthritis score compared with vehicle treatment, whereas high dose rebamipide in CIA aggravated arthritis severity. Based on multivariate analysis, 17 metabolites were identified. The plasma levels of metabolites associated with fatty acids and phospholipid metabolism were significantly lower with rebamipide treatment than with vehicle. The levels of $15-deoxy-^{{\Delta}12,14}$ prostaglandin J2 and thromboxane B3 decreased only in high dose-treated groups. Certain peptide molecules, including enterostatin (VPDPR) enterostatin and bradykinin dramatically increased in rebamipide-treated groups at both doses. Additionally, corticosterone increased in the low dose-treated group and decreased in the high dose-treated group. Conclusion. Metabolomics analysis revealed the anti-inflammatory effects of rebamipide and suggested the potential of the drug repositioning in metabolism- and lipid-associated diseases.
This study evaluated the anti-inflammatory potential of the crude alkaloidal fraction (CAF) of methanol extract of Solanum trilobatum Linn. (Solanacea) root in animal models of inflammation. Crude alkaloidal fraction at doses of 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg significantly (p < 0.01) reduced carrageenan induced rat paw volume at 3 h after carrageenan challenge as compared to control group of animals. CAF (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg) significantly (p < 0.01) and dose dependently suppressed cotton pellet induced granuloma formation. Topical application of CAF (1, 5 and 10 mg/ear) markedly inhibited multiple application of TPA in mice. CAF elicited pronounced inhibitory effects on formaldehyde and adjuvant induced arthritis in rats. These results indicate that CAF of methanol extract of the Solanum trilobatum has anti-inflammatory activity in acute and chronic inflammation.

Head of Panax ginseng indicates its growth number of years and it has been widely used for supplying energy to weak person. However, the underlying mechanisms are not sufficiently reported. Thus, we inclined to study head of Panax ginseng in rheumatoid arthritis and inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an organ-specific inflammatory disease of human, is characterized by a chronic and destructive inflammatory reaction and possibly autoimmune in etiology. It is occurred when the synobial membranes of joints and many other tissues of the body is attacked which induces significant health problem in terms of numbers of sufferers (U.S. incidence 23.7/100,000), and the synobial inflammatory is dominated by activated macrophage.
The anti-inflammatory activity of SEO-KYONG-TANG extract(SKTWE) was examined by using carrageenin- and acetic acid-induced edema, croton oil-induced granuloma pouch, and adjuvant arthritis in rats. In addition, the acute toxicity, analgesic and antipyretic effects of SKTWE were investigated by using general experimental methods in mice. SKTWE did not show acute toxicity at 2400 mg/kg(p.o.) nor 1200 mg/kg(i.p.). After oral administration of the SKTWE to rats, significant anti-inflammatory activity was observed on 1% carrageenin- and 5% acetic acid-induced edema. Also, it significantly inhibited granuloma and exudation in these. In the adjuvant arthritis experiment, the SKTWE decreased the hind paw edema after 3 days of oral administration. In addition, it inhibited the writhing syndromes induced by 0.7% acetic acid in mice. The antipyretic activity of SKTWE was also observed through the typhoid vaccine experiment. These results suggest that SKTWE has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic action.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to investigate the feasibility for the early diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis by the reconstruction of three-dimensional photoacoustic imaging with a tissue phantom. Methods: Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (l = 532 nm) was applied to a tissue phantom to generate photoacoustic waves, and the acquired photoacoustic signals at different positions around the sample were used to recombine the distribution of the optical absorption and the images were subsequently generated through a reconstruction algorithm. Results: From the acquired photoacoustic signals, the surface andinner core of the phantom was clearly distinguished. Furthermore, the back-projection algorithm was able to reconstruct two-dimensional and three-dimensional photoacoustic images that contained the optical absorption property information of the tissue phantom. Conclusion: The results indicate that the photoacoustic imaging technique has many advantages such as high optical contrast and high acoustic resolution. The acquired images can be used for the early diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis by the structural information obtained from the region of interest.

Asthma is traditionally regarded as a chronic airway disease, and recent literature proves its heterogeneity, based on distinctive clusters or phenotypes of asthma. In defining such asthma clusters, the nature of comorbidity among patients with asthma is poorly understood, by assuming no causal relationship between asthma and other comorbid conditions, including both communicable and noncommunicable diseases. However, emerging evidence suggests that the status of asthma significantly affects the increased susceptibility of the patient to both communicable and noncommunicable diseases. Specifically, the impact of asthma on susceptibility to noncommunicable diseases such as chronic systemic inflammatory diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), may provide an important insight into asthma as a disease with systemic inflammatory features, a conceptual understanding between asthma and asthma-related comorbidity, and the potential implications on the therapeutic and preventive interventions for patients with asthma. This review discusses the currently under-recognized clinical and immunological phenotypes of asthma; specifically, a higher risk of developing a systemic inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis and their implications, on the conceptual understanding and management of asthma. Our discussion is divided into three parts: literature summary on the relationship between asthma and the risk of rheumatoid arthritis; potential mechanisms underlying the association; and implications on asthma management and research.
Objectives : The present study was undertaken to evaluate whether Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba ethanol (ARA-E) extract, which is the pericarp of $Atractylodes$$japonica$ Koidz. has an effect on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in mice. Methods : Male DBA/1J mice were induced by intradermal injection of bovine collagen-II in Freund's incomplete adjuvant (IFA). The CIA mice in the onset of arthritis were treated daily with oral administration of ARA-E extract at dose of 50 mg/kg/bw for 28 days. Arthritis index, histopathological changes and the levels of anti-type II collagen (CII) IgG and inflammatory cytokine, TNF-${\alpha}$ in sera of mice were measured to evaluate the antiarthritic effect of ARA-E. Results : ARA-E extract significantly decreased the arthritic scores and inhibited pathological changes of knee joint tissues in CIA mice. ARA-E extract also significantly decreased the serum levels of anti-CII IgG and TNF-${\alpha}$ in CIA mice. These results indicate that ARA-E extract may effectively prevent arthritic damages in CIA mice, at least partially, by inhibiting the production of autoantibodies and inflammatory cytokine. Conclusions : This studies suggest that ARA-E has a therapeutic potential in inflammatory joint diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Piroxicam is known to be a new nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug which has anti-inflammatory, antiedema, antigranuloma and analgesic activities through the mechanism of inhibition of prostaglandin synthetase. Clinical survey for piroxicam was carried cut on 40 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and 30 cases of degenerative arthritis who visited University Hospital from Feb. to June, 1979. Following results could be obtained: 1) In rheumatoid and degenerative arthritis, the effect of piroxicam was significant in decrease of joint pain, shortening of duration of morning stiffness, decrease in number of swollen joints, improvement of joint stiffness, decrease of E.S.R., increase of mean grip strength and decrease of articular index. 2) Side effects, almost all in G-I troubles were encountered in 6 cases in 40 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and 4 cases in 30 cases of degenerative arthritis.
