  • The elliptic functions have transmission zeros on the imaginary axis and exhibit equal ripples in the stopband as well as in the passband. As a consequence they can be made optimal in the sense that the transition band is minimal. However the time domain behaviors turned out to be inferior to those of Chebyshev and Butterworth responses. This paper investigates the unit step responses and impulse responses in order to analyze the effects of various parameters such as passband attenuation, stopband frequencies M. etc., The following are the prominent features. Step responses of elliptic filters rise faster and produce larger overshoots and undershoots with higher natural frequencies. In the case of even functions, the initial values are non-zero which decreases as $\omega$s increases. Unlike Butter-worth or Chebyshev cases the impulse responses start with nonzero valses which also decrease as $\omega$s or order of the function increases. Eight figures are included to illustrate above analysis.

  • The use of digital filters in the signal processing field is increasing rapidly with development of the modem industrial society, and generally digital filter is classified into FIR (infinite impulse response) fillers and FIR (finite impulse response) filters. The FIR digital filter has the phase linearity and the easiness of creation. In the design of the FIR digital filter, the window function is used to alleviate ripples caused by Gibbs Phenomenon around the cut-off frequency of the passband. In this paper, we designed a new window function and compared with existing Manning, Hamming and Blackman window functions. And we used peak side-lobe and transient characteristics as standard of judgement.

  • The nonlinearity of hemodynamic response in the somatosensory cortex was investigated with vibrotactile stimulation. The stimuli consisted of a train of 25 Hz, each tasting five different duration periods, 2 s, 4 s, 8 s 12 s, or 16 s with 20 sec periods of no vibration in a pseudo-random order. In order to understand the linearity on the change of stimulus duration for somatosensory cortex, two different tests- checking the linearity of system and finding the impulse response function from gamma-variate function were applied to analyze the hemodynamic response functions. They have produced nearly same results. The BOLD response in the somatosensory cortex Is nonlinear for stimuli of less than 8 seconds, but nearly linear for stimuli greater than 8 seconds. The amplitude, area, TTP, and FWHM as functions of the stimulus duration were calculated and showed a significant downward trend with Increasing stimulus duration for the amplitude and the area. It supports the ranges of nonlinearity are less than 8 seconds.

  • Conventional cepstrum has been widely used to detect echo and fault signals embedded in noise. One of the problems of finding impulse signals using the conventional cepstrum in that it is normally very sensitive to signal to noise ratio (SNR). This paper proposes a signal processing method to detect impulse signal in noisy environment. Because the proposed method minimizes the variance of signal power at a cepstrum domain, it is suggested to be called as minimum variance cepstrum (MV cepstrum). Computer simulations have been performed to understand the characteristics of the MV cepstrum. Both mathematical approach and computer simulations confirmed that the MV cepstrum is a useful technique to detect impulse in noisy environment.

  • In this paper, the analysis model of a composite electromagnetic interference environment is proposed, and the composite interference consists of three types, i.e., impulse, sinusoidal, and rectangular type. Also, we have derived the p.d.f of the amplitude of the composite interference. And using a derived p.d.f, we have evaluated the performance of 16QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) system in a composite electromagnetic interference environment. From the results, it is known that when impulse type interference is weaker than the others, the shape of p.d.f is dominantly governed by the power component ratio of sinusoidal and rectangular type interference. On the other hand, when impulse type interference is stronger, the effect of the other two interference becomes insignificant. Also, It is shown that the smaller both impulsive index (A) and the mean power component ratio ($\Gamma$') in impulse type interference are, the worse the performance of 16QAM system is.

  • The use of digital filters in the signal process field is increasing rapidly with development of the modern industrial society. Especially, detail processors, Y/C separators, ghost removing filters, standard converters (NTSC to PAL or PAL to NTSC) and noise reducers, all of which use digital filters, tend to be used in digital video and audio processing, CATV and various communication fields. Generally, there are two different digital filters, the Rf (infinite impulse response) filter and the FIR (finite impulse response) filter in digital filter. In this paper, we have designed FIR filter which has the phase linearity and the easiness of creation. In the design of the FIR digital filter, the window function is used to alleviate the ripples caused by Gibbs Phenomenon around the cut off frequency of the band pass. But there're some problems to choose proper window function for the design destination due to its fixed values. Therefore, in this paper, we designed a modified Hanning window with new parameter which is adaptively chosen corresponding to design objectives. The digital filter was simulated to prove the validity of the model and it was compared with the Hamming, the Manning, the Blacknan and the Kaiser window function. And we have used peak side-lobe and transient characteristics as standard of judgement.

  • In complex noise environment, digital filter is being used to obtain, transport and storage original voice or image signal. Digital filter can be largely separated FIR(Finite duration impulse response) filter and IIR(Infinite duration impulse response) filter. Among FIR filter, window function has characteristic of linear phase and as can be easily set pass-band frequency, cutoff frequency and so on. In this paper, We compared with established method using transient characteristic and peak side-lobe in order to check filter characteristics after we designed the existing variants of the window function.

  • As a method of obtaining pulse transfer function. transfer function of discrete-time from input-output data, there are method of obtaining unknown parameter of pulse transfer function from estimated impulse response before(1-3). There is no need to approximate to several meanings because of not being established algebraical relations between impulse response for estimation error and parameter of transfer function exactly. In this paper, I inquire the method[4] of obtaining the optimal pulse transfer function as a meaning of Hankel norm approximation from impulse response data and examine estimated property as computer simulation from this method.

  • Selection or generation of appropriate input ground motion is very important in performing a dynamic analysis. In Korea, it is a common practice to use recorded strong ground motions or artificial motions. The recorded motions show non-stationary characteristics, which is a distinct property of all earthquake motions, but have the problem of not matching the design response spectrum. The artificial motions match the design spectrum, but show stationary characteristics. This study generated ground motions that preserve the non-stationary characteristics of a real earthquake motion, but also matches the design spectrum. In the process, an impulse function-based algorithm that adjusts a given time series in time domain such that it matches the target response spectrum is used. Application of the algorithm showed that it can successfully adjust any recorded motions to match the target spectrum and also preserve the non-stationary characteristics. The modified motions are used to perform a series of nonlinear site response analyses. It is shown that the results using the adjusted motions result in more reliable estimates of ground vibration. It is thus recommended that the newly adjusted motions be used in practice instead of original recorded motions.

  • A principal components analysis (PCA) of the median head-related impulse responses (HRIRs) in the CIPIC HRTF database reveals that the individual HRIRs can be adequately reconstructed by a linear combination of 12 orthonormal basis functions. These basis functions can be used generally to model arbitrary HRIRs, which are not included in the process to obtain the basis functions. To clarify whether these basis functions can be used to model other set of arbitrary HRIRs, an numerical error analysis for modeling and a series of subjective listening tests were carried out using the measured and modeled HRIRs. The results showed that the set of individual HRIRs, which were measured in our lab using different measurement conditions, techniques, and source positions, can be well modeled with reasonable accuracy. Furthermore, all subjects reported not only the accurate vertical perception but also the front-back discrimination with the modeled HRIRs based on 12 basis functions. However, as less basis functions were used for HRIR modeling, the modeling accuracy and localization performance deteriorated.
