Rebinning-Based Deterministic Image Reconstruction Methods for Compton Camera (컴프턴 카메라를 위한 재배열 기반 확정론적 영상재구성법)

  • While Compton imaging is recognized as a valuable 3-D technique in nuclear medicine, reconstructing an image from Compton scattered data has been of a difficult problem due to its computational complexity. The most complex and time-consuming computation in Compton camera reconstruction is to perform the conical projection and backprojection operations. To alleviate the computational burden imposed by these operations, we investigate a rebinning method which can convert conical projections into parallel projections. The use of parallel projections allows to directly apply the existing deterministic reconstruction methods, which have been useful for conventional emission tomography, to Compton camera reconstruction. To convert conical projections into parallel projections, a cone surface is sampled with a number of lines. Each line is projected onto an imaginary plane that is mostly perpendicular to the line. The projection data rebinned in each imaginary plane can then be treated as the standard parallel projection data. To validate the rebinning method, we tested with the representative deterministic algorithms, such as the filtered backprojection method and the algebraic reconstruction technique. Our experimental results indicate that the rebinning method can be useful when the direct application of existing deterministic methods is needed for Compton camera reconstruction.

SVD Pseudo-inverse and Application to Image Reconstruction from Projections (SVD Pseudo-inverse를 이용한 영상 재구성)

  • A singular value decomposition (SVD) pseudo-inversion method has been applied to the image reconstruction from projections. This approach is relatively unknown and differs from conventionally used reconstructioll methods such as the Foxier convolution and iterative techniques. In this paper, two SVD pseudo-inversion methods have been discussed for the search of optimum reconstruction and restoration, one using truncated inverse filtering, the other scalar Wiener filtering. These methods partly overcome the ill-conditioned nature of restoration problems by trading off between noise and signal quality. To test the SVD pseudo-inversion method, simulations were performed from projection data obtained from a phantom using truncated inversefiltering. The results are presented together with some limitations particular to the applications of the method to the general class of 3-D image reconstruction and restoration.

Wavelet based Image Reconstruction specific to Noisy X-ray Projections (잡음이 있는 X선 프로젝션에 적합한 웨이블렛 기반 영상재구성)

  • In this paper, we present an efficient image reconstruction method which is suited to remove various noise generated from measurement using X-ray attenuation. To be specific, we present a wavelet method to efficiently remove ring artifacts, which are caused by inevitable mechanical error in X-ray emitters and detectors. and streak artifacts, which are caused by general observation errors and Fourier transform-based reconstruction process. To remove ring artifacts related noise from projections, we suggest to estimate the noise intensity by using the fact that the noise related to ring artifacts has a strong correlation in the angle direction, and remove them by using wavelet shrinkage. We also suggest to use wavelet-vaguelette decomposition for general-purpose noise removal and image reconstruction. Through simulation studies. we show that the proposed method provides a better result in ring artifact removal and image reconstruction over the traditional Fourier transform-based methods.

Three Dimensional Target Volume Reconstruction from Multiple Projection Images

  • The aim of this study is to reconstruct the 3D target volume from multiple projection images. It was assumed that we were already aware of the target position exactly, and all processes were performed in Target Coordinates whose origin was the center of the target. We used six projections: two projections were used to make a Reconstruction Box and four projections were for image acquisition. Reconstruction Box was made up of voxels of 3D matrix. Projection images were transformed into 3D volume in this virtual box using geometrical based back-projection method. Algorithm was applied to an ellipsoid model and horse-shoe shaped model. Projection images were created using C program language by geometrical method and reconstruction was also accomplished using C program language and Matlab(The Mathwork Inc., USA). For ellipsoid model, reconstructed volume was slightly overestimated but target shape and position was proved to be correct. For horse-shoe shaped model, reconstructed volume was somewhat different from original target model but there was a considerable improvement in target volume determination.

  • An algorithm, which can obtain a reconstructed image from incomplete projections in computed tomography, is proposed. The algorithm is accomplished with a simple operations of iterative correction in reconstruction - reprojection process using the measured incomplete projections the object's crossection boundary, and so on, To demonstrate effectiveness of the algotithm the results of a computer simulation is presented.

Influence of CT Reconstruction on Spatial Resolution (CT 영상 재구성의 공간분해능에 대한 영향)

  • Computed tomography, which obtains section images from reconstruction process using projection images, has been applied to various fields. The spatial resolution of the reconstructed image depends on the device used in CT system, the object, and the reconstruction process. In this paper, we investigates the effect of the number of projection images and the pixel size of the detector on the spatial resolution of the reconstructed image under the parallel beam geometry. The reconstruction program was written in Visual C++, and the matrix size of the reconstructed image was $512{\times}512$. The numerical bar phantom was constructed and the Min-Max method was introduced to evaluate the spatial resolution on the reconstructed image. When the number of projections used in reconstruction process was small, artifact like streak appeared and Min-Max was also low. The Min-Max showed upper saturation when the number of projections is increased. If the pixel size of the detector is reduced to 50% of the pixel size of the reconstructed image, the reconstructed image was perfectly recovered as the original phantom and the Min-Max decreased as increasing the detector pixel size. This study will be useful in determining the detector and the accuracy of rotation stage needed to achieve the spatial resolution required in the CT system.

  • Recently developed Computed Topography (CT) reconstruction algorithms are reviewed in a more generalized sense and a few reconstruction examples are given for illustration. The construction of an image function from the physically measured projections of some object is Discussed with reference to the least squares optimum filters, originally derived to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in communications theory. The computerifed image processing associated with topography is generalized so as to include 3 distinct parts: the construction of an image from the projection, the restoration of a blurred, noisy image, degraded by a known space-invariant impulse response, and the further enhancement of the image, e.g. by edge sharpening. In conjunction with given versions of the popular convolution algorithm, n6t 19 be confused with filtering by a 2-diminsional convolution, we consider the conditions under which a concurrent construction, restoration, and enhancement are possible.   • In order to render 3D model of the bone, the stack of cross-sectional images must be reconstructed from a series of X-ray radiographs, served as the projections. In the case where the distance between x-ray source and detector is not infinite, image reconstruction from projection based on parallel-beam geometry provides an error in the cross-sectional image. In such case, image reconstruction from projection based on conebeam geometry must be exercised instead. This paper is devoted to the determination of detector center for SART conebeam Technique which is critically effect the performance of the resulting 3D modeling.

  • A true three-dimensional cone-beam reconstruction (TTCR) algorithm for the complete sphere geometry is derived, which is applicable to the direct volume image reconstruction from 2-D cone-beam projections. The algorithm is based on the modified filtered backprojection technique which uses a set of 2-D space-invariant filters and is derived from the previously developed parallel-beam true three-dimensional reconstruction(TTR) algorithm. The proposed algorithm proved to be superior in spatial resolution compared with the parallel-beam TTR algorithm.

  • This research deals with a problem of reconstructing 3D surface structures from their 2D projections, which is an important research topic in computer vision. In order to provide robust reconstruction algorithm, that is reliable even in the presence of uncertainty in the range images, we first present a detailed model and analysis of several error sources and their effects on measuring three-dimensional surface properties using the space encoded range imaging technique. Our approach has two key elements. The first is the error modeling for the space encoding range sensor and its propagation to the 3D surface reconstruction problem. The second key element in our approach is the algorithm for removing outliers in the range image. Such analyses, to our knowledge, have never attempted before. Experimental results show that our approach is significantly reliable.
