  • In this paper, the power burden of High-TC superconducting (HTSC) module comprising the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with two triggering currents during the fault period was analyzed. The short-circuit tests for the simulated power system with the SFCL in the different fault positions, which were expected to affect the amplitude of the fault current, were carried out. Through the comparative analysis on the power burden of the HTSC modules, the proposed flux-lock type SFCL was confirmed to be effective to divide into two power burdens according to the amplitude of the fault currents.

  • We Investigated the current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) by fault angles. The flux-lock type SFCL consists of the primary and the secondary copper coils wound in parallel through the iron core and YBCO thin film. In this paper, the current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL by fault angles in case of the subtractive and the additive polarity windings were compared and analyzed. The flux-lock type SFCL limited fault current more quickly as the fault angles increased. On the other hand, the initial power burden of the superconducting element during the fault increased as the fault angles increased. In addition, we found that the resistance of the flux-lock type SFCL in case of the subtractive polarity winding was more increased than that of the additive polarity winding. The peak current of the fault current in case of the subtractive polarity winding was larger than that of the additive polarity winding.

  • To apply the superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) into a power system, the analysis for its recovery characteristics as well as the consideration for its cooperation with other protecting machine such as a circuit breaker is required. The recovery characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL like its current limiting characteristics are dependent on the winding direction of two coils. In this paper, the experiments of the current limiting and the recovery characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL with YBCO thin film were performed. From the analysis on the experimental results due to the winding direction of two coils, the limited fault current in case of the additive polarity winding was observed to be lower than that for the case of the subtractive polarity winding. In addition, the recovery time was found to be faster in case of the additive polarity winding compared to the subtractive polarity winding.

  • In this paper, the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using double quench was suggested and its transient current limiting characteristics were analyzed. The suggested flux-lock type SFCL using double quench consists of two magnetically coupled windings and two $high-T_{c}$ superconducting (HTSC) elements connected in series with each winding. To analyze the transient current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL using double quench, the short-circuit tests according to the fault angles, which affect the transient component of the fault current right after the fault occurs, were executed. From the comparative analysis for the short-circuit tests at both $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ fault angles, the useful transient current limiting operations of the suggested flux-lock type SFCL through the double or the single quench occurrence were confirmed.

  • In this paper, the fault current limiting characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with peak current limiting function were analyzed through its short-circuit tests. The setting condition for the peak current limiting operation was derived from its electrical equivalent circuit, which was dependent on the inductance ratio between the third coil and the first coil. Through the analysis on the short-circuit tests for the flux-lock type SFCLs with the different inductance ratio between the third coil and the first coil, the setting value for the peak current limiting operation of the flux-lock type SFCL with peak current limiting function could be confirmed to be adjusted with the variation of the inductance ratio between the third coil and the first coil.

  • In order to increase the capacity of the superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL), the current and voltage grades of the SFCL must be increased. As a method for the increase of the current and voltage grades of the SFCL, we compared the various characteristics between the flux-lock type SFCL "With three superconducting units connected in series and the transformer type SFCL using the transformer with three secondary circuits. One of three superconducting units had not quenched in the flux-lock type SFCL. Therefore, the unbalanced power burden happened because of the voltage difference generated by unbalanced quenching between the superconducting units. In the meantime, the three superconducting units were all quenched in the transformer type SFCL using the transformer, and the voltage difference generated between the superconducting units was decreased. Therefore, the difference of critical characteristics was complemented by distribution of fault current in accordance with the turn's ratio between primary and secondary windings. The unbalanced power burden of the superconducting units was reduced due to flux-share between the superconducting units in the transformer. In conclusion, the capacity increment of the SFCL using a transformer was easier due to equal distribution of voltages generated by simultaneous quench of the superconducting units. We think that the characteristics is improved more because of the decrease of saturation in the iron core if the secondary winding is increased in the SFCL using the transformer.

  • We investigated the characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) considering magnetization characteristic of iron core. The flux-lock type SFCL, like other types of SFCLs using the iron core, undergoes the saturation of the iron core during the initial fault time. Therefore, if the design to prevent the saturation of the iron core is considered, the effective fault current limiting operation can be achieved. Through the analysis for its equivalent circuit including the magnetization characteristic of the iron core, the limiting impedance of the flux-lock type SFCL was drawn. The magnetization currents and the limited currents of SFCL, which were dependent on the winding direction and the turns' ratio between two coils, were investigated from the short circuit experiment. It was confirmed that their experimental results agreed with the analysis ones.

  • The flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) can apply the magnetic field into the high-$T_C$ superconducting(HTSC) element by adopting the magnetic field coil in its third winding. To apply the magnetic field into the HTSC element effectively, the capacitor for LC resonance is connected in series with the magnetic field coil. However, the current waveform of third winding for the application of the magnetic field is affected by the LC resonance condition for the frequency of the source voltage and can affect the waveform of the limited fault current. In this paper, the current waveform of the third winding in the flux-lock type SFCL according to LC resonance condition during a fault period was analyzed. From the differential equation for its electrical circuit, the current equation of the third winding was derived and described with the natural frequency and the damping ratio as design parameters. Through the analysis according to the design parameters of the third winding, the waveform of the limited fault current was confirmed to be influenced by the current waveform of the third winding and the design condition for the stable fault current limiting operation of this SFCL was obtained.

  • The hysteresis characteristics of flux-lock reactor, which is an essential component of flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), was investigated. The hysteresis loss of iron core in flux-lock type SFCL does not happen due to its winding's structure especially in the normal state. From the equivalent circuit for the flux-lock type SFCL and the fault current limiting experiments, the hysteresis curves could be drawn. Through the hysteresis curves together with the fault current level due to the inductance ratio for the 1st and 2nd winding, the increase of the number of turns in the 2nd winding of the flux-lock type SFCL had a role to prevent the iron core from saturation.

  • In this work, the current limiting and recovery characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with series connection of two coils were effectively improved by adding a third winding into the conventional flux-lock type SFCL with series connection of two coils. To confirm the contribution of the third winding to the current limiting and recovery characteristics of this type of the SFCL, short-circuit testing was carried out with consideration of the third winding, and the effect of the third winding on the current limiting and recovery characteristics was examined by comparative analysis of the amplitude of the limited fault current and the power burden of the high-TC superconducting (HTSC) element comprising the SFCL. Through the analysis of both the limiting impedance and the operational current as the main design parameter of the SFCL, the improved current limiting and recovery characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL using the third winding could be verified.
