  • In this paper, we propose a method about producing skin color model adaptively in input image and face detection. The principle process which we proposed is finding eyes candidates by applying the eye features to neural network, and then using the around color to find the distribution of color value. There will be a verification process that producing face region by using color value distribution which is detected as skin region and find mouth candidate in corresponding face region; if eye candidate and mouth candidate's connection structure is similar with face structure, then it can be judged as a face. Because this method can detect skin region adaptively by finding eyes, we solve the rate of false positive about the distorted skin color which is used by existing face detection methods. The experiment was performed about detecting the eye, the skin, the mouth and the face individually. The results revealed that the proposed technique is better than the traditional techniques.

  • A method for the simple, rapid, specific, and accurate detection of Bacillus anthracis spores was developed by employing specific capture peptides conjugated with fluorescent quantum dots (QDs). It was possible to distinguish B. anthracis spores from the spores of B. thuringiensis and B. cereus using these peptide-QD conjugates by flow cytometric and confocal laser scanning microscopic analyses. For more convenient high-throughput detection of B. anthracis spores, spectrofluorometric analysis of spore-peptide-QD conjugates was performed. B. anthracis spores could be detected in less than 1 h using this method. In order to avoid any minor yet false-positive signal caused by the presence of B. thuringiensis spores, the B-Negative peptide, which can only bind to B. thuringiensis, conjugated with another type of QD that fluoresces at different wavelength was also developed. In the presence of mixed B. anthracis and B. thuringiensis spores, the BABA peptide conjugated with QD525 and the B-Negative peptide conjugated with QD585 were able to bind to the former and the latter, specifically and respectively, thus allowing the clear detection of B. anthracis spores against B. thuringiensis spores by using two QD-labeling systems. This capture peptide-conjugated QD system should be useful for the detection of B. anthracis spores.

  • A short-range underwater target detection and identification techniques using mid- and high-frequency bands have been highly developed. However, nowadays the long-range detection using the low-frequency band is requested and one of the most challengeable issues. The waveform inversion technique is widely used and the hottest technology in both academia and industry of the seismic exploration. It is based on the numerical analysis tool, and could construct more than a few kilometers of the subsurface structures and model-parameters such as P-wave velocity using a low-frequency band. By applying this technique to the underwater acoustic circumstance, firstly application of underwater target detection is verified. Furthermore, subsurface structures and it's parameters of the war-field are well reconstructed. We can confirm that this technique greatly reduces the false-alarm rate for the underwater targets because it could accurately reproduce both the shape and the model-parameters at the same time.

  • Recently, there are active studies on a forward collision warning system to prevent the accidents and improve convenience of drivers. For collision evasion, the vehicle detection system is required. In general, existing learning-based vehicle detection methods use the entire appearance of the vehicles from rear-view images, so that each vehicle types should be learned separately since they have distinct rear-view appearance regarding the types. To overcome such shortcoming, we learn Haar-like features from the lower part of the vehicles which contain tail lights to detect vehicles leveraging the fact that the lower part is consistent regardless of vehicle types. As a verification procedure, we detect tail lights to distinguish actual vehicles and non-vehicles. If candidates are too small to detect the tail lights, we use HOG(Histogram Of Gradient) feature and SVM(Support Vector Machine) classifier to reduce false alarms. The proposed forward vehicle detection method shows accuracy of 95% even in the complicated images with many buildings by the road, regardless of vehicle types.

  • Corona discharge is always a sign of failure processes of high-voltage electrical apparatus, including those utilized in electric railway systems. Solar-blind ultraviolet (UV) cameras are effective tools for corona inspection. In this work, we present an automatic railway corona-discharge detection system based on solar-blind ultraviolet detection. The UV camera, mounted on top of a train, inspects the electrical apparatus, including transmission lines and insulators, along the railway during fast cruising of the train. An algorithm based on the Hough transform is proposed for distinguishing the emitting objects (corona discharge) from the noise. The detection system can report the suspected corona discharge in real time during fast cruises. An experiment was carried out during a routine inspection of railway apparatus in Xinjiang Province, China. Several corona-discharge points were found along the railway. The false-alarm rate was controlled to less than one time per hour during this inspection.

  • In this paper, we proposed image processing technique for automatic real-time fire and smoke detection in tunnel environment. To avoid the large scale of damage of fire occurred in variety environments, it is purposeful to propose many studies to minimize and to discover the incident as fast as possible. But we need new specific algorithm because tunnel environment is quite different and it is difficult to apply previous fire detection algorithm to tunnel environment. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed specific algorithm which can be applied in tunnel environment. To minimize false detection in tunnel we used color and motion information. And it is possible to detect exact position in early stage with detection, test, verification procedures. In addition, by comparing properties of each algorithm throughout experiment, we have proved the validity and efficiency of proposed algorithm.

  • This paper proposes a signal detection method for IoT door lock system which is a new application field of VLC (Visible Light Communication). This paper describes the signal detection technique for user recognition that needs to be overcome in order to apply VLC to door lock system which has a demand for new technology due to security issue. This system has security and high signal detection characteristics because it uses existing infrastructure to communicate with visible light. In order to detect the signal using FFT, the signal of the user who accesses the authentication channel based on the pilot signal is detected, and the performance of the false alarm probability and detection probability is shown in the channel model.

  • This paper is an experimental study to find an optimal detection method for detecting fire early in a rack-type warehouse stored with goods. In this study, we constructed rack-type structure with the fourth floor of 13.5 m high and conducted fire experiments which were to measure flow of heat/smoke in rack-type structure and response time of fire detectors. The detectors used at experiments were fixed temperature type detectors, rate of rise detectors, photoelectric smoke detectors, air sampling smoke detectors and flame detectors. The used ignition sources are n-heptane fire for response of heat detection and cotton fire for response of smoke detection. The fixed temperature type detectors, rate of rise detectors and photoelectric detectors were installed to every rack level respectively. The results show that the rate of rise detector should be installed every 2 levels and photoelectric smoke detector should be installed every 4 levels for the early stage fire detection. Air sampling smoke detectors can detect fire early in response to control of sensitivity, but there is a problem in false alarm. The fixed temperature detector is not suitable for early stage fire detection in warehouse and flame detector not worked if flame is not visible, so it need to install combination with other detector.

  • Cyclic Codes can be used for burs(or time slot) synchronization as well as error detection as that the overhead bits of the burst, which would be nessary to seperate burst synchronization and error detection systems, may be eliminated. In this paper a new method for combined burst synchronization and error detection is proposed which requires CRC decoding once only, while the previous method which inspects channel error after searching for burst synchronization requeires CRC decoding twice. The proposed method has the advantage of simple implementation and reducing processing time over the previous one, still showing the same detection perfdormance. It may occur that a burst different from the actually transmitted one is falsely accepted in the presence of channel errors. The exact expression for the false acceptance probability is newly presented through a simple derivation basied on the fact that it is determined by channel errors but not by detection methods.

  • In this paper, we investigate the fundamental performance limits of the cooperative sensing using energy detection by considering the unlimited number of sensing nodes. Although a lot of cognitive radio research so far proposed various uses of energy detection because of its simplicity, the performance limits of energy detection have not been studied when a large number of sensing nodes exist. First, we show that when the sensing nodes see the independent and identically distributed channel conditions, then as the number of sensing nodes N goes to infinity, the OR rule of hard decision achieves zero of false alarm Pf for any given target probability of detection $\bar{P_d}$ irrespective of the non-zero received primary user signal to noise ratio ${\gamma}$. Second, we show that under the same condition, when the AND rule of hard decision is used, there exists a lower bound of $P_f$. Interestingly, however, for given $\bar{P_d}$, $P_f$ goes to 1 as N goes to infinity. Third, we show that when the soft decision is used, there exists a way of achieving 100% utilization of secondary user, i.e., the sensing time overhead ratio goes to zero so does $P_f$.We verify our analyses by performing extensive simulations of the proposed unlimited cooperative sensing. Finally, we suggest a way of incorporating the unlimited cooperative sensing into a practical cellular system such as long term evolutionadvanced by exploiting the existing frame structure of absolute blank subframe to implement the in-band sensing.
