The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship between self-esteem and mental health in Middle school students, and provided basic data to develop a nursing program for the prevention of mental disease and the promotion of mental health in adolescence. Subjects were 153 students in the third year of three middle schools located in K city. Instruments used in this study were the self-esteem questionnaire developed by Choi, B. K. & Jun, G. Y.(1993) and the simplified SCL-90 developed by Lee, H. K.(1986) for measuring mental health. Data were analyzed by Cronbach's alpha, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient by using SPSS/PC+ program. It was found that the mean score of the self-esteem was 3.20. The score of self-esteem in family was high and the score of self-esteem in school was low. The mean score of mental health was 1.94. The scores of depression, obsessive-compulsive and interpersonal sensitivity were high, the scores of phobic anxiety and somatization were low. There were significant differences among religions (F=2.709, p= .032), and between personalities (t=-2.285, p= .024) with respect to self esteem. There were no significant differences between general characteristics variables and mental health. However there was significant negative correlation between the mean self-esteem score and the mean mental health score (r=-.431, p= .000). In conclusion, mental health is strongly related to self-esteem. If and adolescent who suffers from mental health is not received proper treatment, his or her mental health prohibits him from managing sound social life even after grown-up. Thus, nursing intervention in adolescence should be developed to enhance the self-esteem of adolescence and to help him raise sound mind.
The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the guided imagery program on stress of adolescents. The study design was nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest study. The Data were collected from the 1st to 30th of September in 2000. Two schools were selected as an experimental group and a control group. Each group included two classes. The experimental group was consisted of 40 male students and 42 female students and the control group was consisted of 41 males and 42 females. The guided imagery was provided with audiotapes to the subjects in the classroom for 8 minutes per each therapy, 5 times a week for 4 weeks. The pretest was given before the therapy to measure variables for both groups and the posttests were performed twice after 2 weeks and 4 weeks from the start of intervention. The Instruments used in this study were perception of stress scale developed by Park(1996), Vividness of Imagery Scale; short form of bett's test scale developed by Sheenhan(1967). The data were analyzed by the SAS program using Chi-square test, t-test, repeated measure ANOVA and Bonferroni correction. The results of this study are as follows: 'The level of stress of adolescents who received the guided imagery will be significantly lower than that of control group' was supported(F=10.14, p=.00). In conclusion, the guided imagery was suggested as an effective nursing intervention did reduce the stress of adolescents which school nurses could utilize for adolescents at school.
This study investigated the effects of the cognitive acceleration program devised for accelerating the development of formal reasoning ability of students. ‘Thinking Science’ activities developed by the Cognitive Acceleration through Science Education(CASE) project were implemented to 420 students in 5th grade aged 10+ in four elementary schools over a period of two yea. Homogeneity between the experimental group and control group was tested with SRT II, and the improvement of formal reasoning ability of the students was tested with SRT III. The results were analyzed by treatment, gender, and cognitive levels of the students. Statistically significant gains were shown in the CASE group compared with those in the control group. Cognitive level of girls in the CASE group increased as compared with the control group, while there was moderate effect in boys for the primary school. These results implied that the thinking science activities were effective in cognitive acceleration of girls aged 10+. It was shown that much more CASE students in concrete operational level shifted to formal operational level as compared with the control group while there were no significant effects in the other levels for primary school.
Background: To analyze the effect of self-regulation on the fear of dental treatment in order to use it as basic data for efficient oral health care among male adolescents. Methods: A survey was administered to 241 first graders of specialized high schools in Daegu using a self-entry method. Twenty questions about fear of dental treatment and fifteen questions about self-regulation were included. The higher the score, the higher the fear of dental treatment and the self-regulation ability, showing a high reliability of 0.972 and 0.750, respectively. Results: The mean score of the participants' self-regulation ability was 3.25±0.51 and that of the degree of fear for dental treatment was relatively low at 1.72±0.85. It was confirmed that the higher the academic performance (F=7.635, p<0.01), the better was the self-regulation based on self-diagnosis (F=3.142, p<0.05), and was associated with higher health awareness (F=5.894, p<0.01). The degree of fear for dental treatment was significantly higher in the self-diagnosis-induced poor health group (F=4.933, p<0.01) and associated with a lower awareness of health (F=3.093, p<0.05). The participants' self-regulation ability was significantly negatively correlated with the degree of fear regarding dental treatment (r=-0.269, p<0.01). Regression analysis was performed using the degree of fear as a dependent variable and including sub-area variables of self-diagnosis-based health status, perception of health, and self-regulation ability as independent variables (β=-0.163, p<0.05). Among the self-regulation abilities, controlled composition (β=-0.232, p<0.01) had a significant effect; the higher the composition, the lower the degree of fear. The total explanatory power of this variable was 8.5%. Conclusion: An appropriate customized education program that can encourage individuals to practice self-care and maintain oral hygiene along with a clear understanding of underlying individual oral health conditions during adolescence is essential for promoting oral health.
Instroduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate safety education-related backgrounds and safety behaviors of elementary school children at a local area in Jeonbuk province. Methods: Study subjects were 308 5th and 6th graders from 6 schools located in J City and the data were collected from June 16-27, 2003. Research instrument to test safety behaviors was 4-points summated scale (Cronbach${\alpha}$= .94) composed of 54-items with three sub-categories school life safety (${\alpha}$= .88), traffic safety (${\alpha}$= .86), and daily life safety (${\alpha}$= .84), The data was analyzed by percentage, x2-test, t-test, ANOVA and Duncan test using SPSS/PC 10.0. Results: 1. Safety Education-related Characteristics: Safety education was mostly conducted during extracurricular hour as picnic (37%) and regular class (37.2%); and the instructors of safety education were school nurse (33.2%), classroom teacher (30.9%), and parents (23.4%) in order. About two third (71.0%) of the subjects have had many kinds of school event program such as essay writing, poster drawing, oratorical contest in the course of safety education According to gender, girl students was more favorable about school events as a effective safety education measure (x2=9.188, p= .010); and according to school location, nural school taught more at moming & closing session (x2=7.383, p= .025), by school nurse or classroom teacher (x2=36.574, p= .001), and had more frequent (x2=63.337, p= .001) safety education class. 2. Practice of safety behaviors: Mean scores of safety behaviors was $106.9{\pm}24.92$ out of 162 points. According gender, the scores of girl students (t=-3.296, p= .001) were significant higher than boy students. But there was not any significant difference according to school area According to safety education-related characteristics, the scores of safety behaviors was significantly higher in the group who thought that school event program was more effective on safety education (F=4.024, p= .019), and who were more interested in current safety education class (F= 10.203, p= .001) Conclusions: From the above findings, the authors concluded that school-based safety education was mainly conducted at extra-curricular and regular class, and by school nurse or classroom teacher in elementary school. Even though the mean scores of safety behaviors of elementary school children was in medium level, those. were significant higher in girl students and in rural school children. And extra-curricular activities and school event programs were suggested as more effective strategies for school-based safety education Based on the above findings, safety education class can be recommended in regular curricular basis; and various extracurricular activities and school event programs need to be developed for more effective school-based safety education. In addition, further study on gender-specific factors on safety behaviors and nationwide survey on school-based safety education should be needed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a safety education program for elementary school students by comparing elementary school teachers and students on their demands for safety education. Method: The data were collected from 1,754 1-6th grade elementary school students and 335 elementary school teachers (6 elementary schools) using self- report questionnaires. Results: 1) The mean score for level of demand for safety education by elementary school teachers was 4.43 ({\pm}.44$) and for students, 4.01({\pm}.65$). 2) There was a significant difference in the level of demand for safety education between the elementary school teachers and students (t=-14.46, p=.000). 3) There were significant differences in the level of demand for safety education according to teachers' gender (t=-4.36, p=.000), teachers' concern about a safe life (t=5.14, p=.000), teachers' perception of a safe life (t=3.08, p=.002), students' gender (t=-3.89, p=.000), students' grade (t=5.06, p=.000), students' concern about safe life (t=13.09, p=.000), students' safe life practices (t=11.64, p=.000), students' previous experience of safety education (t=2.02, p=.045), and students' recognition of the importance of safety education (F=67.31, p=.000). Conclusion: To develop effective safety education programs for elementary school students, it is necessary to give precedence to demands and interest in safety education of the students.
It has been many changes in traditional Korean food habits according to the improvement of household income levels and the rise of standard of living. Therefore, the pattern of consumption in animal origin processed/convenient foods would have changed. This research aims to find the tendency of consumption in some animal origin processed/convenient foods compared with typical Korean traditional foods according to household income levels. Therefore, this survey was made on 698 children from 10 elementary schools located in Seoul. They were divided into 6 groups according to their household income levels. The data were analysed using Chi-square test and F-test in SPSS package program. From this research, the following results were obtained: 1. Their average monthly household income levels were between 500, 000~1, 500, 000 won(64.2%) and their family were of mostly 4~5 members. There were no significant differences in children's physical status among various income groups. As the household. income level increases, the food expenditure per month increases and Engel's coefficient decreases. 2. The animal origin processed/convenient foods that have no significant differences are ham, sausage, milk, yogurt, canned fish, and fish meal. The high-income groups preferred bacon, cheese, pork cutlet, and fried chicken, compared to those of low-income groups. The low-income groups preferred crab-flavored meal, compared to those of high-income groups. 3. In some Korean traditional foods, there were significant differences according to income levels. Those were Bulgogi, baked fish, fried meat, cooked fish and meat with soy-bean sauce. Fried fish and anchovy have no significant differences in food intake frequency according to household income levels. Chicken and egg saute are liked by children in every income groups. 4. Between the animal origin processed/convenient foods and the typical Korean nonprocessed traditional foods, children preferred the former regardless of income levels. In conclusion, animal origin processed/convenient food consumption patterns were not affected by household income levels.

Purpose: This study aimed to provide basic data for infection control education plans based on infection control awareness and performance of paramedic students during clinical field training. Methods: Data were collected from paramedic students with experience in clinical field training. The data collection period was from May 4, 2023, to June 4, 2023, and 132 copies of the collected survey were analyzed using the SPSS27.0 program. Results: Infection control awareness and performance were 4.80±0.24 points and 4.49±0.55 points out of 5, respectively. The infection control awareness of the participants according to clinical field training-related characteristics differed significantly in university education before clinical field training (t=2.100, p=.038). In addition, there were significant differences in performance in the number of clinical field training sessions (F=9.149, p=.000), hospital education before clinical field training (t=5.365, p=.000), and hospital education during clinical field training (t=3.094, p=.002). Conclusion: Before clinical field training, schools should provide infection control education that combines theory and practice suitable for hospital practice so that students can complete the infection control education organized by the hospital. Furthermore, if a university develops infection control in the clinical field training guidelines, it will have a positive impact on students' infection control performance through prior education.

The purpose of this study was to investigate eating habits. nutritional knowledge and the active use of information from the eating habits chapter of the textbook by middle school students of Korea and Japan. 9th grade students of 7 middle schools residing in Gyeongju and Hukuoka. Japan (592 Korean students. 546 Japanese students) participated in this study. Research data were collected by means of questionnaires and analyzed by such means as frequency, percentage. means. standard deviation. $\chi$$^2$-test, t-test, F-test and Pearson's correlation analysis employing SPSS Program. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. In terms of the physical features of middle school students, the height of Korean students tend to be taller than Japanese students. The weight of Korean students are on the average heavier than Japanese students. Research also proves that Japanese families have more family members. Korea has more full time housewives as well. Regarding their health. Korea has more people who consider themselves healthy than Japan does. 2. More students in Japan tend to eat breakfast and dinner everyday compared with Korea. Students eat snacks at night more in Korea than Japan. The average meal takes less than 20 minutes in Korea. It takes less than 30 minutes in Japan. Dinner is considered to be most important meal by the students of Korea and Japan. Meat. noodles. bread and cake are highly enjoyed by the students of both nations. 3. There was a little difference between Korean and Japanese students. concerning the necessity of nutrition education because they both study home economics. 4. The use of information from the textbook shows. most students eat green vegetable almost everyday but Korean students tested as eating more. Japanese students more often say they drink more than a cup of milk everyday The Japanese students have higher rates of using information from the textbooks. drink milk everyday. eat bean paste soup. eat a lot of meat and fish. 5. It turns out that students who have more nutritional knowledge have a low late of eating convenience food and student who utilize the chapter in the textbook in everyday life have low rates of eating convenience food.

Purpose: This study was conducted to suggest direction and strategy of safety education proper to elementary school children. Method: The subject of this survey consisted of 313 3rd- 5th grade from 4 elementary schools in Kyungi-Do and Kwangwon-Do. Data were collected from March to May, 2002 using a questionnaire about 「safety education needs」, 「knowledge about injury prevention」, 「attitude about injury prevention. Result: 1. The degree of safety education needs showed averaged 77.50 on the basis of 100 points. 2. The degree of knowledge and attitude about injury prevention showed averaged 72.81 and 81.74 seperately on the basis of 100 points. 3. With the respect to the demographic characteristics, there were stastically significant differences in safety education need according to children's grade(F=8.692, p=.003), sex(t=-2.059, p=.040), family type(t=-2.229, p=.027) and in knowledge & attitude about injury prevention, there statiscally significant difference according to experience of injury prevention education(t=3.058, p=.003; t=5.308, p=.000) each. 4. The level of safety education needs is correlated at signficant level with knowledge and attitude about injury prevention of childrens(r=.166, p=.048; r=.265, p=.001) and between knowledge and attitude about injury prevention, there was significant correlation (r=.427, p=.000). Conclusion: From this results, nurses can plan safety education program appropriate to children's needs, level of knowledge and attitude about injury prevention.
