  • The present study examined the moderating influences of firm type(B2B, B2C) on the relationships between SMEs' utilization of government export assistance programs, firm capabilities(marketing & technology capabilities) and export performances(financial and strategic performances). The results of regression analyses on 247 B2B and 137 B2C cases showed that the positive influence of utilization of export assistance programs on financial performance was greater for B2B than for B2C SMEs. This construct, however, had no influence on strategic performance for neither B2B nor B2C cases. Further, both marketing and technology capabilities have positive influences on each of financial and strategic performances. Marketing capability, however, had a greater influence on financial performance for B2C than for B2B SMEs. Technology capability had a greater influence on financial performance for B2B than for B2C SMEs. Implications, limitations, and future studies were also discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of a firm's dynamic capabilities measured by sensing, seizing, transforming, coordinating, and learning capabilities on its competitive capabilities, such as product quality, process flexibility, delivery speed, and low cost. The relationship among dynamic capabilities, competitive capabilities, and export firm performance is set up as a research model based on empirical studies related to the existing dynamic capability perspective and competitive capabilities. To test this research model, this study collected 102 samples of data using a questionnaire survey on both manufacturing and exporting firms. The partial least squares method is used and the following results are derived from an empirical analysis. First, dynamic capabilities have a positive effect on competitive capabilities, such as product quality, process flexibility, delivery speed, and low cost. Second, product quality and process flexibility have a positive effect on export firm performance. Third, unlike previous research results, this study finds that the competitive capabilities of a firm in the areas of delivery speed and low cost do not significantly affect its performance. These findings provide meaningful implications for export venture firms that need to acquire and maintain competitive advantage in a rapidly changing environment.

  • This study investigates how entrepreneurial orientation and absorptive capacity influence strategic capabilities (technology, marketing, and market-linking capabilities), as well as how strategic capabilities affect performance in Korean export venture firms. To analyze this empirically, we hypothesized the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation, absorptive capacity, strategic capabilities, and firm performance based on an existing resource-based review and empirical literatures. We collected data using questionnaires and used a partial least squares (PLS) structural equation model for hypothesis testing. The following results were obtained from the empirical analysis. First, entrepreneurial orientation has a significant positive impact on absorptive capacity. Second, entrepreneurial orientation has a significant positive effect on technology, marketing, and market-linking capabilities. Third, absorptive capacity has a significant positive influence on technology, marketing, and market-linking capabilities. Fourth, technology and marketing capabilities have a significant positive effect on firm performance. However, market-linking capabilities have no significant influence on firm performance.

  • This paper analyzes changes in the export potential and competitiveness of China, Japan, and Korea. The analysis of Japan's export market share reveals that in sectors where Korea's potential was strong in the early 1990s, Japan's market share diminished. This suggests the possibility that Korea was catching up with Japan, eating into Japan's market share. The same analysis of Korea's export market share in the 2000s shows, for items in which China's export potential was high, Korea's market share has declined comparatively since 2010, with the tendency growing much larger. China's export potential continues to expand in markets for Korea's key export products, making it difficult to rule out the possibility that Korea's competitiveness in key export products will be hindered, driven by the catching up of China. To respond to these challenges, it is important for Korea continuously to foster and enhance creative and core capabilities that latecomers will not easily be able to emulate.

  • This study aims to examine an effective path that links the use of export promotion programs(EPPs) to the export performance of SMEs. In particular, the study focuses on what role the export innovativeness of SMEs plays between EPPs and export performance. In order to verify the conceptual model, the structural equation modeling is applied, using the data collected from a sample of 152 Korean SME exporters. The study highlights the notion that the relationship between the use of EPPs and export performance is not direct and that higher performance can be achieved through export innovativeness, the ability to reconstruct internal resources and to respond quickly to changes in the export market. The results of the empirical analysis show that EPPs partially mediate the relationship between export market-orientation and export innovativeness, and that such mediated export innovativeness continues to fully mediate the relationship between EPPs and export performance. That is, if SMEs make good use of EPPs that meet their needs, they can be encouraged to re-bundle or strengthen their existing resources and capabilities, which in turn lead to higher export performance. The study thus helps extend understanding of EPPs and export performance literature.

  • As advancement into global markets becomes increasingly important, there are increasing interests in high-tech companies' export. This study is an empirical investigation of the determinants of high-tech companies' export in the Daegu region seen from a resource-based perspective with focuses on organizational resources and innovative capabilities. The empirical analysis revealed that the export determinants hold truer for high-tech companies compared to companies overall, and that high-tech companies' key export determinants include organizational age as a organizational resource and international intellectual property rights (IPRs) as an innovative capability. In this sense, policies to promote high-tech companies' export should be designed to support high-tech companies that have a relatively longer history and international IPRs. The results also suggest that in the working level high-tech companies should establish their internal capabilities from a resource-based perspective, for example history and experience in their fields and international IPRs, rather than trying to target global markets from the beginning as born-global companies do.
