All the plants on earth live under an electric and magnetic field because the earth is a magnet and there is an electric field between the charged cloud and the ground. It has been reported that electromagnetic fields influence both the activation of ions and polarization of dipoles in living cells of seeds and plants, though the mechanism of these actions is still poorly understood. In this paper, the effects of the electric and magnetic fields and exposure times to the germination of several vegetable seeds and its early growth have been investigated experimentally to find out the feasibility of a plant factory for mass production of clean and unpolluted vegetables. The germination rate and the growth rate of some seeds under the fields exposed were analysed and compared with those of unexposed ones. It is found that the germination rate and its early growth rate of exposed seeds under the fields were accelerated about 1.1-1.4 and 1.7-2.2 times in maximum compared with those of unexposed ones. But, however, an inhibitory effect on germination and plant early growth were shown in the case of the higher electric and magnetic fields.
The control over microstructure in block copolymer thin films using external electric fields has become an interesting research topic. In this article, the effect of nanoparticle on the microdomain alignments in block copolymer (polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine)/nanoparticle (Au) thin films under electric fields has been examined with transmission electron microscopy. The homogeneous dispersion of Au nanoparticles into the block copolymer matrix was achieved by surface modification of nanoparticles with compatible ligands. Compared with the phenomenon seen in the pristine block copolymer thin films, a peculiar alignment behavior was observed in the block copolymer/nanoparticle hybrid thin films under electric fields. In addition, the different pathways observed in the pristine and nanoparticle incorporated block copolymer thin films were also monitored as a function of exposure time. This work can provide the fundamental information for understanding microdomain alignment in block copolymer/nanoparticle thin films under external electric fields.
For measuring the transient electromagnetic fields and related quantities created by disconnector operations in GIS, one needs the wide bandwidth sensors with simple transfer functions. This paper describes a new developed electric field sensor to measure the very fast transient electric fields and voltages, and the measuring principle, design and construction of planar electric field sensor are described. A calibration and/or correction technique of the sensor is investigated which enables an accurate determination of the sensor response to the time-changing electric fields. As a consequence, the low voltage calibrations certify that a rise time of 1.7 [ns] is achieved for the planar electric field sensor and a total bandwidth extending from several Hz to 200 MHz for the measuring system which presents the constant division ratio as a function of frequency.

This paper shows that the configuration of power transmission lines currently in place is suitable on the basis of calculated magnetic field strengths. The magnetic fields were computed for typical current distributions on power transmission lines for electric railways, which are characterized by severe load fluctuations and phase distortions. The result of the numerical analysis are compared with th ELF guidelines of magnetic fields from several case studies. The final conclusion reached in that effects of the magnetic fields near power transmission lines for electric railways are not significant enough to cause a biological safety concern.

A nationwide survey for electric and magnetic fields(EMFs) near overhead transmission lines has been conducted. The median values of the electric and magnetic fields of 208 transmission lines were 0.50 kV/m and 12.6 mG, respectively. The maximum values were 3.16 kV/m and 125 mG. The measured EMFs were compared with the calculated ones. The causes of the discrepancy between measured and calculated EMFs are also discussed.
In this study, we propose an analytical model to elucidate the formation of electric fields between two parallel conducting plates. Using nine Gaussian surfaces, we investigated the charge redistributions and electric fields formed by parallel conducting plates when two charged plates get close together. The electric charges are redistributed via a new electrostatic equilibrium to create the electric field of each plates. As a result, the electric field start from + electrode plate to - electrode plate via inducing a new electrostatic equilibrium, implying that the application of Gaussian surfaces to only one of the electrodes of parallel-plate capacitors is deserved. The results will help undergraduate students understand the charge redistribution and the electric field formation in parallel-plate capacitors in a reasonable manner.

In spite of increasing public concern about the human exposure to electric and magnetic fields(EMFs), there is little information about the EMF levels in the vicinity of power facilities and of home appliances. To provide such information, a nationwide survey for EMFs near overhead transmission lines has been conducted. The median values of the electric fields and magnetic fields of 153 transmission lines were 0.47 kV/m and 11.6 mG, respectively. The maximum values were 3.16 kV/m and 125 mG. These were low values in comparison with any EMF guidelines or standards of advanced contries. Measurements of the magnetic fields of typical home appliances and daily human exposure records have been also conducted. These magnetic field values were comparable to those of the transmission lines.
The characteristics of gas free jet flows in laminar with having applied electric fields have been investigated experimentally. A single electrode configuration was adopted such that electric fields were applied directly to nozzle and thus the surrounding could be an infinite ground. The experimental results showed that breakdown point at laminar flow has been measured by varying the applied voltage and frequency of AC. The effect of applying electric fields to free jet flow in laminar was discussed in detail.
In this paper, measurement and analysis of ELF electric and magnetic fields due to a transmission line have been carried out and the power frequency field strength measuring system is designed. In order to evaluate electric and magnetic fields associated with 60 Hz electric power transmission and distribution lines, the actual survey near a transmission tower has been made and analyzed. It may be inferred from these results that the maximum electric and magnetic fields strength in the vicinity of a line tower do not exceed 3.5[kV/m] and 20[${\mu}T$]. The results of the field measurements agree with limits and guidelines recommended by various authorized international institutes.

A non-thermal micron size plasma needle is applicable for medical treatment because it includes radicals, charged particles, ultraviolet emission, and strong electric fields. The electric fields around the plasma needle device driven by a radio frequency wave are investigated in order to calculate the power delivered to the cell. A commercial multi-physics code, CFD-ACE, was utilized for the calculation of electric fields for the optimization of the needle structure. The electric field and energy absorption profiles are presented with the variation of the device structure and the distance between the needle and tissues. The living tissues effectively absorb the radio frequency power from the plasma needle device with the covered pyrex structure.
