  • The main object of this study was to investigate experimentally the characteristics of cyclone-bag filter with bottom inlet to decrease the high pressure drop which was one of main problems of fabric bag filter. The experiment was executed for the analysis of collection efficiency and pressure drop(specially, pressure drop of fabric filter) characteristics of the cyclone-bag filter in comparison with those of general fabric bag filter with various experimental parameters such as the inlet velocity, dust loading and variation of vortex region, etc. In the results, the tangential inlet type showed higher collection efficiency for submicron particles below $1{\mu}m$ in diameter than of center inlet, and over 99% for overall collection efficiency. For the inlet particle concentration $100mg/m^3$, pressure drop reduction ratios were shown as 15~38% with the inlet velocity in case of large bag, while 30~48% for small bag due to the increase of vortex region.

  • Concerning the national health, it is important to develop an accurate prediction method of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) because being exposed to such fine dust can trigger not only respiratory diseases as well as dermatoses, ophthalmopathies and cardiovascular diseases. The National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) employs a decision tree to predict bad weather days with a high PM concentration. However, the decision tree method (even with the inherent unstableness) cannot be a suitable model to predict bad weather days which represent only 4% of the entire data. In this paper, while presenting the inaccuracy and inappropriateness of the method used by the NIER, we present the utility of a new prediction model which adopts boosting with quantile loss functions. We evaluate the performance of the new method over various ${\tau}$-value's and justify the proposed method through comparison.

  • Accumulating epidemiological evidence indicates that exposure to fine air pollution particles (APPs) is associated with a variety of adverse health effects. However, the exact physiochemical properties and biological toxicities of fine APPs are still not well characterized. We collected four types of fine particle (FP) (diesel exhaust particles [DEPs], natural organic combustion [NOC] ash, synthetic organic combustion [SOC] ash, and yellow sand dust [YSD]) and investigated their physicochemical properties and in vitro biological toxicity. DEPs were almost entirely composed of ultrafine particles (UFPs), while the NOC, SOC, and YSD particles were a mixture of UFPs and FPs. The main elements in the DEPs, NOC ash, SOC ash, and YSD were black carbon, silicon, black carbon, and silicon, respectively. DEPs exhibited dose-dependent mutagenicity even at a low dose in Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 and 100 strains in an Ames test for genotoxicity. However, NOC, SOC, and YSD particles did not show any mutagenicity at high doses. The neutral red uptake assay to test cell viability revealed that DEPs showed dose-dependent potent cytotoxicity even at a low concentration. The toxicity of DEPs was relatively higher than that of NOC, SOC, and YSD particles. Therefore, these results indicate that among the four FPs, DEPs showed the highest in vitro biological toxicity. Additional comprehensive research studies such as chemical analysis and in vivo acute and chronic inhalation toxicity tests are necessary to determine and clarify the effects of this air contaminant on human health.

  • The government has recently come up with a policy to tighten regulations on air pollutant emissions due to public concerns over the emission of pollutants such as fine dust. The coal-fired power plant is speeding up the improvement of the performance of environmental facilities, and this paper deals with the cases of performance improvement by adding a catalyst to the 500 MW standard coal-fired power DeNox system, and examines the change in the performance factors according to the addition of catalysts and the efficiency of NOx removal. The DeNOx efficiency before and after improvement increased from 80% to 88%, and the conversion rate of SO2/SO3, ammonia slip which are performance factors satisfied the design assurance value, but exceeded the design assurance value for differential pressure. At the same time, the ammonia slip concentration and differential pressure items increased as the NOx removal efficiency increased, resulting in the need for management and improvement.

  • Background: Exposure to particulate matter (PM) emitted from vehicle exhaust might disrupt systemic function and elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease. In this study, we examined the changes of cardiometabolic biomarkers among vehicle inspectors exposed daily to PM0.25 and components. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at two vehicle inspection centers, Pulogadung and Ujung Menteng, located in East Jakarta, Indonesia. The exposed respondents were 43 workers from vehicle inspection centers, and the unexposed group consisted of 22 staff officers working in the same locations. Vehicle exhaust particulate matter was measured for eight hours using a Leland Legacy personal pump attached to a Sioutas Cascade Impactor. The used filters were 25 and 37-mm quartz filters. The particulate matter concentration was analyzed using a gravimetric method, whereas trace elements were analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence. An EEL Smoke Stain Reflectometer analyzed black carbon. Results: The personal exposure concentrations of PM0.25 were 10.4-fold higher than those in unexposed groups. Calcium and sulfur were the major components in the obtained dust, and their levels were 3.3- and 7.2-fold higher, respectively, in the exposed group. Based on an independent-samples t-test, high-density lipoprotein, triglyceride, HbA1c, total immunoglobulin E, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and nitric oxide levels were significantly different between the groups. Conclusions: In summary, it was suggested that PM0.25 exposure from vehicle exhaust might affect cardiometabolic biomarkers change.

  • This study analyzes the fuel conditions and environmental effects of converting heating in rural villages that rely on fossil fuels into wood fuel. In particular, we tried to derive the most important considerations when using wooden chips as fuel in aging agricultural villages where various variables such as weather, facility characteristics, fuel quality, and maintenance capabilities work. Above all, an experiment was conducted by comparing it with oak trees to determine whether Italian poplar, a representative attribute water created to supply fuel wood in Korea, is suitable for heating fuel. Through experiments, 1) Even though the supply of poplar wood chips during 10 hours of operation was 60.74 kg less than that of hardwood chips, the production of hot water was 140 kWh higher. 2) The higher the exhaust gas temperature, the proportional (increase) oxygen concentration and inversely (decrease) PM and CO emissions. 3) Poplar has twice as much ash content as hardwood and three times more fine dust has been detected, but it meets all the standards for wood quality at the Korea Forest Science Institute. 4) Under the condition that there is a difference in water content (7.7%), hardwood cost 1.13 times more wood chips per 1 MWh than poplar, and even if the water content is corrected equally, hardwood cost 1.05 times more per 1 MWh than poplar. 5) In conclusion, it was proved that the fuel possibility, economic possibility, and environmental possibility of poplar wood chips are sufficient.

  • In these proceedings, we will address the problem of air pollution on the premises of the Cement factory SHARRCEM L.L.C. in Hani Elezit in the Republic of Kosovo respectively around the clinker cooler, rotary kiln, and raw material mill. By air pollution, we mean the introduction of chemicals, particles, or other harmful materials into the atmosphere which in one way or another causing damage to the development of plants and organisms. Air pollution occurs when certain substances are released into the air, which depending on the quantitative level, can be harmful to human health, animals, and the environment in general. The analysis of air shows the influence of the extractive and processing industry on the chemical composition of air. Parameters analyzed though under control such as the case of carbon dioxide, due to the increasing production capacity of cement, the production of hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of CO2 gas made CO2 production a concern. With the purchase of the latest technology by the SHARCEM Factory in Hani Elezit, the amount of air pollution has been reduced and the allowed parameters of environmental pollution have been kept under control. Air pollutants are introduced into the atmosphere from various sources which change the composition of the atmosphere and affect the biotic environment. The concentration of air pollutants depends not only on the quantities that are emitted from the sources of air pollution but also on the ability of the atmosphere to absorb or disperse these emissions. Sources of air pollutants include vehicles, industry, indoor sources, and natural resources. There are some natural pollutants, such as natural fog, particles from volcanic eruptions, pollen grains, bacteria, and so on.

  • This study investigated the distribution behaviors of PM2.5 and PM10 at two air quality monitoring sites, Go-eup (GO) and Backseokeup (BS), located in Yangju City, South Korea. The amounts of emissions sources of pollutants were analyzed based on the Clean Air Policy Support System (CAPSS), and the contribution rates of neighboring cities were enumerated in Yangju. Yangju has a geological basin structure, and it is a city with mixed urban and rural characteristics. The emission concentration of particulate matter was affected by geological and seasonal factors for all sites observed in this study. Therefore, these factors should be considered when establishing policies related to particulate matter. Because the official GO and BS station sites in Yangju are both situated in the southern part of the city, the representativeness of both stations was checked using correlation analysis for the measurement of PM2.5 and PM10 by considering two more sites-those of Bongyang-dong (BY) and the Gumjun (GJ) industrial complex. The data included discharge amounts for business types 4 and 5, which were not sufficiently considered in the CAPSS estimates. Because the 4 and 5 types of businesses represent over 92.6% of businesses in this city, they are workplaces in Yangju that have a significant effect on the total air pollutant emission. These types of businesses should be re-inspected as the main discharge sources in industry, and basic data accumulation should be carried out. Moreover, to manage the emission of particulate matter, attainable countermeasures for the main sources of these emissions should be prepared in a prioritized fashion; such countermeasures include prohibition of backyard burning, supervision of charcoal kilns, and management of livestock excretions and fugitive dust in construction sites and on roads. The contribution rates by neighboring cities was enumerated between 6.3% and 10.9% for PM2.5. Cooperation policies are thought to be required with neighboring cites to reduce particulate matter.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the influence of various pre-planting $NO_3:NH_4$ ratios in the coir dust+peatmoss+perlite (3.5:3.5:3, v/v/v) medium on the growth of tomato plug seedlings (cv. Dotaerang Dia), changes in chemical properties of root media, and tissue nutrient contents. With the fixation of N concentration to $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, the $NO_3:NH_4$ ratios were adjusted to 100:0, 73:27, 50:50, 27:73, 0:100. Then, root media containing various $NO_3:NH_4$ ratios and equal concentration of other essential nutrients were filled into 50-cell plug trays and the seeds of 'Dotaerang Die' tomato were sown. The investigation of seedling growth and tissue analysis for mineral nutrient contents based on the dry weight of above-ground tissue were conducted 6 weeks after sowing. As seedlings grew, the EC decreased quickly and pH increased gradually in the all treatment media. The plant height, fresh weight and dry weight of seedlings in the treatment of 50:50 ($NO_3:NH_4$) were 29.0 cm, 13.7 g, and 1.21 g, respectively, which were the highest among treatments tested. However, the seedlings in the treatment of 0:100 ($NO_3:NH_4$) had 26.5 cm, 11.2 g, and 0.92 g in plant height, fresh weight and dry weight, respectively. These were the poorest among the treatments tested. The tissue contents of N were 2.77 to 3.22% in all the treatments. The treatment of 27:73 ($NO_3:NH_4$) had the highest contents of Fe, Mn and Zn and that of 0:100 ($NO_3:NH_4$) had the lowest contents of Mg, Na, Cu, Mn and Zn among the treatments tested. The results indicate that $NH_4$ ratio should be lower than 50% in the coir dust+peatmoss+perlite (3.5:3.5:3, v/v/v) medium for seedling growth of tomato and the optimum ratio will be used to draw up guide lines for plug seedling production.
