  • In the present study, the variation of settlement, pore water pressure and undrained shear strength through model tests were measured. Also, the variation of water content, unit weight and shear strength by the vane shear tests were observed. In this study, appropriate deposit time of construction equipments used in treatment of hydraulic fills is determined from the prediction curve of increased shear strength in dredged fills.

  • Recently, the hydraulic fill method is commonly used in many reclamation projects due to lack of fill materials. The method of hydraulic fill in reclamation is executed by transporting the mixture of water-soil particles into a reclaimed land through dredging pipes, then the dredged soil particles settle down in the water or flow over an out flow weir with the water. In the present study, practice each three method in order to suggest method of determining the loss rate of the dredged fills. The first sieve and hydrometer analysis were performed with the soil samples obtained before and after dredging and then apply theory of particle breakage, the second compare with the volume of dredged soil between at the dredging area and the target pond and the last compare with weight of dredged soil between before and after dredging at the dredging area and in the target pond for estimating the amount of soil particles residual at the reclaimed area and the loss of soil particles passed through the weir. In addition to compare with the loss ratio between as using Marsal's modified theory of particle breakage and measured weight and volume in the field.

  • In order to investigate the effect of improvement with bamboo mats on dredged fills, several tests were performed with different widthes (0.0B, 0.5B, 1.0B, 2.0B). The results indicate that the failure modes of the models without bamboo mats are close to local shear failure, and change to general shear failure as the width of a bamboo mat increases. A series of tests with four different widths (0.0B, 0.5B, 1.0B, 2.0B) were carried out on the models which have no desiccated surface layers, to find out the width that the general shear failure might occur. Finally, a series of tests with this width were performed on the models with three different desiccated surface layers (3cm, 5cm, 10cm). Throughout the tests, strength and deformation according to the thickness of desiccated surface layer was investigated.

The method of hydraulic fill in reclamation is executed by transporting the mixture of water-soil particles into a reclaimed land through dredging pipes, then the dredged soil particles settle down in the water or flow over an out flow weir with the water. In the present study, to compare the soil and sand-mat mixed method with sand-air jet method for shallow improvement of hydraulic fills at southern seashore, the model tests were performed. Through the model test results, the behavior of surface as disturbance of desiccation crust is analyzed.

  • Volume change of the dredged soils is composed of loss amount of the soil particles flowing over an outflow weir with water and settlements due to both the self-weight consolidation in reclaimed layer and the desiccation at the surface of reclaimed layer. In order to estimate the amount of soil particles flowing over an outflow weir with water, the breakage theory and the results of hydrometer analyses. To verify a validity of the proposed procedure, evaluated loss ratio is compared with various estimates from the other existing methods.

  • Comparative study has been performed to investigate the behavior of dredged fills on rigid (Model 1) and flexible (Model 2) containers. The study was focused on the sedimentation of soil fills and the development of total stresses. Model 1 is made of an acrylic cylinder and Model two is a scale-size geotextile tube. Results indicate that for rigid containers, significant decrease of the sediment height is apparent during the dewatering process. On the other hand, because the geotextile is permeable, the water is gradually dissipated during the filling process on flexible containers. Hence, significant loss in the tube height is not apparent during the duration of the test. Pressure spikes are apparent on rigid containers during the filling process which can be attributed to the confining effect due to hydrostatic pressure. For the flexible containers, the pressure readings gradually increases with time during the filling process and normalize at the end on the filling stage. No pressure spikes were apparent due to the gradual dissipation of pore water pressure.

  • In the present study, mainly to determine the embarkation time of equipment in dredged clay fills, an analytical approach is performed to predict a variation of the undrained shear strength in the outermost layer. In this approach, Gibson's non-dimensional linear constant defining the relationship between the void ratio and the effective stress is employed. Also in this approach, void ratios and settlements associated with the volume change due to the self-consolidation and the desiccation shrinkage are evaluated at various elapsed times based on the finite difference solution technique proposed by the authors(1999) and the developed computer program named as DSCON. Predicted results(water content ratio, unit weight and undrained shear strength) are compared with those of laboratory model tests conducted with soil samples obtained from the Koheung site. Based on the predicted undrained shear strengths, possible embarkation time of a equipment is also evaluated. In addition, further analyses are made to indirectly verify the efficiency of the analytical approach proposed in the present study using the PSDDF computer program which can consider the drainage efficiency.

  • A series of tests were conducted to examine the filled tube shape with respect to the filling module type used and to investigate cone resistance properties of a dredged-soil-filled geotextile tube under water and drained conditions. Results based on the filling observation showed that the distribution of the accumulated fills inside the acrylic cell and vinyl tubes differs with respect to the type of filling modules. A crater formation around the inlet area was found during the test using I-type filling module and a horizontal sediment distribution was found during the test using inverse T-Type filling module. The dredged fill material was obtained from the Saemangeum area. The geotextile tube deformation of each filling stage was almost converged when the tube was fully drained. The cone resistance of the dredged fill in the geotextile tube under drained condition is large and is approximately 2~6 times that of the tube under water condition.

  • Dredged fills have been widely used to secure a land for the engineering activities. Before the useful application of the area, the soils should be consolidated to acquire the aquate shear strength. Several research projects have attempted to develop a method fur accelerating the consolidation of soft clay. Our study examined the effect of ultrasonic energy on the consolidation of soft clay, Tests were conducted using specially designed and fabricated equipment that was capable of directly applying ultrasonic energy to soil samples during consolidation tests. The specimens were prepared from slurry using a centrifuge facility, and tests were conducted at various levels of ultrasonic power and treatment time. The study showed that ultrasonic energy had a considerable effect on consolidation time, suggesting that ultrasound can be used to reduce the consolidation time of soft clay.
