  • This paper introduces a new steel jacketing method for reinforced concrete columns with lap splice and evaluates its performance by a series of axial tests of concrete cylinders. At first, 45 concrete cylinders were fabricated with varying the design compressive strengths of 21, 27 and 35 MPa and, then, the part of them was jacketed with two-split-steel jackets under lateral confining pressure. The parameters in the first test were the steel jacket's thickness and the existence of adhesive between steel and concrete surface. In the second test, whole steel jackets were used to wrap cylinders with lateral pressure. Also, a double-layer jacket consisted of two steel plates was introduced; a cylinder was jacketed by two steel plates one after another. The effect of the new method was verified through comparing the results of the compressive tests for plain and jacketed cylinders. The steel jacket built following the new method showed good results of increasing the compressive strength and ductility of the jacketed cylinders with respect to the plain cylinders. The thicker steel jackets showed the more increased compressive strength, and the ductility at failure depended on the welding quality on steel jackets. The adhesive between steel and concrete surface reduced the confining effect of the steel jackets. The whole jacket showed more ductile behavior than the two-split jackets. The double-layered jackets were estimated to possess an equal performance to that of a single steel jacket having the same thickness of the double-layered jacket. Finally, the experimental results were compared with the constitutive model of steel-jacketed concrete; which showed a good agreement between the experimental results and the models.

  • Silicon field emitter arrays (FEAs) have been fabricated by a novel method employing a two-step tip etch and a spin-on-glass (SOG) etch-back process using double layered thermal/tetraethylortho-silicate (TEOS) oxides as a gate dielectric. A partial etching was performed by coating a low viscous photo resist and $O_2$ plasma ashing on order to form the double layered gate dielectric. A small gate aperture with low gate leakage current was obtained by the novel process. The hight and the end radius of the fabricated emitter was about 1.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and less than 100$\AA$, respectively. The anode emission current from a 256 tips array was turned-on at a gate voltage of 40 V. Also, the gate current was less than 0.1% of the anode current.

  • The narrative of the film, Sweet Smell of Success has a multi-layered structure. In Clifford Odets's scenario work, numerous lines for the main plot and subplots repeated a cycle of creation, decomposition, deletion, and modification to enhance the density of the story. As a result, whenever an actor spoke a line or paused, an action or an event that would trigger another line was created, giving depth and persuasiveness to the character's performance. The music of Sweet Smell of Success has multi-layered elements. The non-diegetic music was covered by the orchestral pieces performed by Elmer Bernstein's big band orchestra and the jazz pieces performed by Fred Katz's combo band. The diegetic music was mostly covered by the jazz pieces performed by the Chico Hamilton Quintet. The practical task of the film music was to reinforce or supplement the effect of the narrative driver, and the additional task was to realize the estrangement effect and the aesthetics of stagnation. The possibility and significance of intertextuality of subplots and double sound of this film are not simply confined to the limits of the film noir genre.

  • Photoreaction of guest organic anions in layered organic-inorganic hybrid materials was investigated. The layered hybrids were synthesized by an anion-exchange reaction of $[LiAl_2(OH)_6]Cl{\cdot}yH_2O$ layered double hydroxide with aqueous (Z,Z)- and (E,E)-muconates under inert atmospheric condition, to give new organicinorganic hybrids of $[LiAl_2(OH)_6]_2[(Z,Z)-C_6H_4O_4]{\cdot}zH_2O$ and $[LiAl_2(OH)_6]_2[(E,E)-C_6H_4O_4]{\cdot}H_2O$, respectively. The basal spacings calculated by XRPD of intercalates indicate that muconate anions have almost vertical arrangements against the host $[LiAl_2(OH)_6]^+$ lattices in the interlayer of organic-inorganic hybrid materials. When UV light was irradiated on the suspension of $[LiAl_2(OH)_6]_2[(Z,Z)-C_6H_4O_4]{\cdot}zH_2O$, the (Z,Z)-muconate anions of the gallery space of hybrids were polymerized in the aqueous media while it was isomerized into more stable (E,E)-muconate in the methanollic suspension in the presence of catalytic amount of molecular iodine. All the products were characterized using elemental analysis, TGA, XRPD, FT-IR, $^1H$ NMR and $^{13}C$ CP-MAS NMR.

  • Microwave dielectric properties of the layered and functionally graded materials (FGMs) of $Mg_{0.93}Ca_{0.07}TiO_3$ (MCT) and $(Ca_{0.3}Li_{0.14}Sm_{0.42})TiO_3$(CLST) were investigated as a function of the volume ratio of two components. Dielectric constant was decreased with an increase of the volume ratio of MCT which had a lower dielectric constant thant CLST. For the layered FGMs specimens, the difference of thermal expansion coefficients between two components induced thermal strain to dielectric layers, which was confirmed by the plot of ${\Delta}$k (X-ray diffraction peak width0 versus k (scattering vector) using the double-peak Lorentzian function, f(x). Quality factor of the specimens was affected by the thermal strain of dielectric layer, especially MCT layer. For the specimen with the volume ratio of MCT/CLST = 2, the qulaity factor of the specimen showed a minimum value due to the maximum thermal strain fo MCT layer.

  • In order to predict the indoor air pollutant, the VOCs emission rate is used through small chamber in the design process. However, the small chamber method has limitations as the convective mass transfer coefficient, the most important factor when predicting VOCs contamination of indoor air, is different between the small chamber result and the measured data in the actual building. Furthermore, the existing studies which analyzed mass transfer coefficient in the small chamber were directed on the small chambers developed at the time and FLEC(Field and Laboratory Emission Cell), thus, are different from the current small chamber which has been changed with improvements. The purpose of this study is to determine the emission rate of pollutant in multi-layered building materials, and predict the indoor pollutant concentration through the CFD(Computational of Fluid Dynamics) and CRIAQ2 based on the mass transfer coefficient on singled-layered building material by using the current small chamber widely used in Korea. Futhermore, this study used the new convective mass transfer coefficient(hm') which indicates the existing convective mass transfer coefficient(hm) including VOC partition coefficient(k). Also, formaldehyde was selected as target pollutant.

  • In this study, numerical analyses were conducted to investigate the load transfer mechanisms and dynamic responses between the vertical shaft and the surrounding soil using a dynamic analysis method and a pseudo-static method (called response displacement method, RDM). Numerical solutions were verified against data from the literature. A series of parametric studies was performed with three different transient motions and various surrounding soils. The results showed that the soil stratigraphy and excitation motions significantly influenced the dynamic behavior of the vertical shaft. Maximum values of the shear force and bending moment occurred near an interface between the soil layers. In addition, deformations and load distributions of the vertical shaft were highly influenced by the amplified seismic waves on the vertical shaft constructed in multi-layered soils. Throughout the comparison results between the dynamic analysis method and the RDM, the results from the dynamic analyses showed good agreement with those from the RDM calculated by a double-cosine method.

  • This study aims to develop a form-finding algorithm for a single-layered pneumatic membrane. The initial shape of this pneumatic membrane, which is an air-supported type pneumatic membrane, is to find a state in which a given initial tension and internal pneumatic pressure are in equilibrium. The algorithm developed to satisfy these conditions is that a nonlinear optimization problem based on the force method considering the deformed shape is formulated, and, it's able to find the shape by iteratively repeating the process of obtaining a solution of the governing equations. An computational technique based on the Gauss-Newton method was used as a method for obtaining solutions of nonlinear equations. In order to verify the validity of the proposed form-finding algorithm, a single-curvature pneumatic membrane example and a double-curvature air pneumatic membrane example were adopted, respectively. In the results of these examples, it was possible to well observe the step-by-step convergence process of the shape of the pneumatic membrane, and it was also possible to confirm the change in shape according to the air pressure. In addition, the calculation results of the shape and internal force after deformation due to initial tension, air pressure, and self-weight were obtained.

  • Multiple slab waveguides are analyzed by using the transfer matrix method and by introducing a virtual leaky layer. It is shown that the analysis is conceptually equivalent to the prism coupling phenomenon. The Lorentzian function is made use of toobtain the eigenvalues of multiple waveguides. Computer simulations are performed onsingle layered, double layered wavegurdes. The calculation results are confirmed to agree well with those of the finite difference method.

  • In this study, functional transparent conducting layers were investigated for Si-based photoelectric applications. Double transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films were deposited on a Si substrate in the sequence of indium tin oxide (ITO) followed by aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO). First, we observed that the conductivity and transparency of AZO dominate the overall performance of the double TCO layers. Secondly, the double layered TCO film (consisting of AZO/ITO) deposited by sputtering was compared to a AZO-only film in terms of their optical and electrical properties. We prepared three different AZO films: ITO:3min/AZO:10min, ITO:5min/AZO:7min, and ITO:7min/AZO:4min. The results show that the optical properties (transmittance, absorbance, and reflection) can be controlled by the film composition. This may provide a significant pathway for the manipulation of the optical and electrical properties of photoelectric devices.
