  • Maintenance monitoring of the tunnel which offers continuous data during and after tunneling has been applying to tunnels in order to meet the maintenance of tunnel and to confirm continuous security of the tunnel after tunneling. But, the maintenance monitoring of tunnel results for long period is not easy to find, and moreover, the rational analysis method on tunnel monitoring has not been established yet. In this study, the relationships between displacement and stress of the tunnel concrete lining using various analysis methods are compared with maintenance monitoring. The tunnel behavior were measured in the subway tunnel passing comparative soft the weathering and analyzed both security and mechanical characteristics of the tunnel concrete lining. Also, analyzed relationship between residual water pressure applied on tunnel design and one obtained by monitoring.

  • In this paper, the optimal design of trusses using advanced analysis and genetic algorithm is performed. An advanced analysis takes into account geometric nonlinearity and material nonlinearity. The micro genetic algorithm is used as optimization technique. The weight of structures is treated as the objective function. The constraint functions are defined by load-carrying capacities and displacement requirement. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by comparing the results of the proposed method with those of other method.

  • Recent building structures are superior in its ability but they are light and flexible, and so have problems of vibration. In general, the serviceability of RC slabs was known to be good against vibration because of its hardness. However, recent high-rise apartment slabs are mostly light and long, the serviceability of RC slabs due to vibration could be a problem. In this paper, a basic investigation about vibration problems of RC slabs was performed. Basic information and its influence on vibrations of RC slabs were revealed. Also, its serviceability against vibration was examined. Many tests were conducted on existing building located in Chung-Nam area. As a results, damping ratio, natural frequency, acceleration amplitude and displacement amplitude which were used to examine serviceability of the RC slabs were obtained. These results on the test building proved that its serviceability conditions were satisfied to meet the code against vibration.

  • The evaluation of habitability to building vibration is conducted by the values of natural frequency, amplitude displacement, damping ratio. These values can be obtained from test or analytical results. Data acquisition through test may be possible in existing building, however, to estimate the serviceability of the building, it is necessary to evaluate those values at the stage of design. The natural frequency is important and basic factor for the evaluation of the serviceability. Calculation method of the effective stiffness in RC slab is proposed. To prove the efficiency of the proposed method, sample results of the analysis and the test are compared. These results proved that the effective width proposed to calculate the effective stiffness is proper to evaluate the natural frequency.

  • The viscoelastic dampers are considered to be one of the most efficient means of upgrading existing structures against seismic loads. Generally in the dynamic analysis of a structure with added viscoelastic dampers the internal forces of the dampers are represented by constants that are linearly proportional to displacement and velocity. The purpose of this study is to verify the validity of the linear Kelvin model by comparing the results from the linear analysis with those obtained from the more rigorous nonlinear model such as fractional derivative model. According to the results the structural responses of 1-DOF structure obtained using the linear model are very close to those obtained from nonlinear model. However for multi-D0F structure the difference between the results from both models is enlarged as a results of the assumptions associated with the linear modeling of the viscoelastic dampers.

  • In this experimental program specimens. designed by the test variables, such as percentage of steel fiber incorporated, were constructed and tested to evaluate the flexural performance of reinforced steel fiber concrete beams. Based on the test results reported in this study, the following conclusions are made. Comparing with the load-displacement relationship of standard specimen, specimen over 0.5% of steel fiber incorporated, could be improved significantly flexural performance, such as capacity, ductility, and crack pattern. As increasing in quantity of steel fiber incorporated(0.5%~2.0%), the flexural strength of each specimen was shown the enhancement of 13%~40% in comparision with the standard specimen BSS.

  • Numerical studies were carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of competent hysteric isolators for seismic design of bridge. For dynamic analysis, bridges with isolator were simplified to a model with single degree of freedom. The initial stiffness and the yielding forces of hysteric isolators were varied. Seismic responses obtained by time history analysis show that about 4% of the weight acting as the inertia force is appropriate for the yielding force of isolator. And also better results could be achieved with the values about two times the weight per unit displacement for the initial stiffness of isolator.

  • In this study, a seismic reinforcement system was developed considering the rocking behavior of walls. The rocking behavior is to rotate left and right around the vertical axis of the wall, and the development system is a method of dissipating energy by installing a damper to a large displacement part. Developed steel rod damper was used, and steel rod diameter and length(aspect ratio) were selected as variables. As a result of the experiment, it was evaluated to have excellent seismic performance when the damper length was 260mm.

  • In the past few years, the nondestructive inspection technology has greatly developed due to the increased necessity to gain a complete understanding of the bridge behavior. Especially, the deformations of bridges contain a lot of informations about its health state. By measuring these deformations it is possible to analyze the loading and aging behavior of the structure. However, the current, methods (such as LVDT, dial gage, optical displacement transducer, etc) are often of changeable application on site and have the limitations of installation. In this paper, the classical beam theory was reviewed and the deflections of structure are estimated using measured strain which is easy to acquire. The applicability of this algorithm is verified by laboratory(simple reinforced concrete beam) and field test. By this test, we proposed correction factor to estimate deflection of reinforced concrete beam after cracking, and analyze about the generation of correction factor. Also fiber optic sensors as well as resistive strain gages were installed in the concrete beams to establish the applicability of fiber optic sensors in the field of civil engineering.

  • A method for inspecting defects in display substrates utilizing Fourier optics is proposed in this paper. A cost-effective inspection system can be realized with the proposed method, because it does not require a high-magnification microscope. Also, the proposed method can avoid tight tolerance for variations in displacement between substrate and camera, which is stems from shallow depth of field of the high-magnification microscope. In addition, possible damage caused by collisions between substrate and the inspection equipment can be avoided. The decision algorithm can be simpler than for a conventional inspection system, because spatial shift of periodic substrate patterns does not affect the intensity distribution of the diffracted light, by the Fourier transform property. The proposed method is explained with numerical studies, and experiments are carried out to check its feasibility for color-filter substrates of a liquid-crystal display.
