Computational Thinking Framework-based Analysis of Afterschool Scratch Team Project Experiences (컴퓨팅 사고 프레임워크 기반 방과후 스크래치 팀프로젝트 경험의 분석)

  • This study aims to provide suggestions for software education in an afterschool program, deriving from the analysis of student experiences of working on Scratch team projects. This study reports on the implementation of the 12 week afterschool software education program in an elementary school, where students worked in pairs to learn Scratch programming from ideation to design and presentation. For an in-depth study of student-generated artifacts, we selected three groups' Scratch projects and conducted artifact-based interviews to unpack student experiences working on Scratch projects as a group. Adopting the computational thinking framework as an overarching analytical lens, we focused on examining student experiences from three dimensions of computational thinking (CT), namely, CT concepts, CT practices, and CT perspectives. The present study provides both theoretical and practical implications. Firstly, we demonstrate the feasibility of applying the CT framework for assessing student-generated artifacts in design-oriented software education. We also believe that this study provides important suggestions to future software education programs adopting CT as an overarching design and assessment framework.

Co-evolving with Material Artifacts: Learning Science through Technological Design

  • Recent studies of science and technology "in-the-making" revealed that the process of designing material artifacts is not a straightforward application of prior images or theories by one (or more) person(s) isolated from his or her (their) environment. Rather, designing is a process contingent on the social and material setting for both engineering designers and students. Over the past decade, designing technological artifacts has emerged as an important learning environment in science classrooms. Through the analyses of a large database concerning an innovative simple machines curriculum for sixth-and seventh-grade students, we accumulated valid evidence for the nature of the designing process and science learning through it. In this paper, we show that design actions intertwine with the transformation of the objectified raw materials and artifact, the designer collective, and the mediating tools enabling that transformation, which constitute the elements of an activity from the perspective of cultural-historical activity theory. We conceptualize the continuous change of relation between material artifacts, designers, and tools throughout the design activity as co-evolution. Two episodes were selected to exemplify synchronic and diachronic change of relations inherent in co-evolving activity system. Finally, we discuss the implications of co-evolution during design activity for science learning.

Filter Design to Eliminate Motion Artifact of Pulse Oximetery (펄스 옥시메터의 동잡음 제거 필터 설계)

  • Oxygen saturation of blood is defined as ratio of total hemoglobins density to oxyhemoglobins density And the accuracy of pulse oxymeter that measures the oxygen saturation of blood by a noninvasive method is influenced by a measuring environment, breathing and motion of patient. Especially when patient moved his arms and fingers, it is difficult to eliminate motion artifact because the motion artifact signal has features that are overlap or closed at normal signal in frequency domain. We propose the filtering method that construct the filter banks and a matched falter to improve the Problem. When experimented by the proposed method, the ratio regulation of the proposed methods has 4.1% below than an adaptive filter (39.7%) and a moving average filter (11.2%). So. the Proposed method will be able to get a stable ratio of SpO2.

An Analysis of the Cotton Fabric armour(綿甲) in the late Joseon Korea - with Emphasis on the Remaining Artifact in the National Museum of Korea - (조선 후기 면갑(綿甲) 유물 분석 - 국립중앙박물관 소장 유물을 중심으로 -)

  • The cotton fabric armour for lower class soldiers can be found from the historical records of the mid-Joseon Korea. And the records show that the form and the structure of the armour was modified in the late 19th century in order to provide better protection from gunshots for the soldiers in the midst of the invasions from the West. This is a survey and research of the only artifact of the cotton fabric armour remaining in Korea - for its form, dimensions, and design. Using the historical records as reference, we can confirm the structure and characteristics of the cotton fabric armour of the Joseon period. This cotton fabric armour, preserved in National Museum of Korea, is a vest-type armour made of 30 layers of cotton. On the right shoulder, there is a button for tying knots and strings were tied under both armpits. On the surface of the cotton fabric armour there were some characters and patterns stamped in black. Presently, this artifact in Korea is the only specimen relic of its sort, but there are some other related relics in foreign countries including helmets and belts. Continuous researches would help extend the scope of armour study beyond the traditional researches that only focuses on the armours of the officials, thus helping us to understand the military costumes in traditional Korea.

Improvement of Gibb's Phenomena in Fast Spin Echo Imaging Using Symmetric Echo Arrangement and Filtering (대칭적 에코 배치 및 필터링을 통한 Fast Spin Echo 영상에서의 Gibb's 현상 개선)

  • Fast spin echo imaging utilizes multiple spin echoes to encode multiple k-space lines instead of multiple $T_2-weighted$ images. As results, intensities in k-space data are varying according to T2 decay, which generates Gibb's artifact in the reconstructed image. The echo time for e encoding dc block determines contrast, as is specified by the effective echo time, however, all location of other echoes to different k-space frequency blocks in fast spin echo imaging is not f fully investigated. In this study, symmetric arrangement of multiple echoes in k-space is investigated to reduce Gibb's artifact. Design of filters based on the measurement of multiple e echo intensities is also proposed in two stage manner, i.e., equalization and filtering. From s simulation and experiment, it was observed that Gibb's phenomena were substantially reduced b by the proposed methods.

  • This paper is in the intersection of software engineering and system engineering, two intimately intertwined disciplines. A dominating theme in this paper is the integral conceptualization of systems at large, as well as an underlying concern with software systems. In the software development life cycle, challenges still exist in translating requirements into a design artifact and then into an implementation (e.g., coding), then validating the results. From our perspective, software engineering requires an integrating paradigm toward a unified modeling orientation. Many methodologies, languages, and tools exist for facilitating system development processes. This paper is a venture into project development. To focus the materials, we concentrate on Harel's novel (and classic) development environment, which integrates a scenario-based engineering object orientation and statecharts through developing a railcar system. The railcar system is used as a detailed sample of translating requirements into a design artifact and then into an implementation, then validating the result. The project is re-cased as a single integrated modeling endeavor to be contrasted with the scenario and statecharts' development. The result of this scheme is an enriched understanding through experimenting with and contrasting various development methods of software projects.

A Study on the 'Theater of the World' and the 'Roman Forum' in Analogical Aspect (유추적 관점에서 본 '포로 로마노'와 알도로시의 '세계극장'에 대한 고찰)

  • Aldo Rossi explained Roman Forum as a significant urban artifact, because Roman Forum analogically showed not only an image of Roman Empire but also a figure of primitive design for its region. Thus the comparison and analysis between characteristics of Aldo Rossi's architectural works which are based on the theory of 'Analogical city' and the forums, the urban artifacts, was proceeded in this study. Consequently, it was discovered that Aldo Rossi had used his analogical thinking from the forum for his architectural languages such as gable roofs, square windows with depth, columns and so on. His analogical use of organizing spaces, such as courtyard type and pillar corridor type, has also shown that their types came from forum spaces. His analogical aspects of the forum: a space where urban images are analogically formed; were expressed in the 'Theater of Science' with the urban architecture form as the actor and the Theatre as the stage for analogical urban performances. Nevertheless, the expression of primitive design which divides the Roman Forum from other forums was actualized in 'the Theater of the World'. He not only analogically used types from Roman Forum in architectural design but also used boat in Water space, which decided the lifestyle and culture of Venice even before the civilization, to express the primitive design of Venice. Consequently, Aldo Rossi, by aiming the severance from the tradition, provided the possibility of explaining the newest modem type within the historical meaning by forming type which finds its continuance in history through 'the Theater of the World' and through analogical thinking along with the level of modern culture, to our urban architectural atmosphere that has lost its historical meanings.

  • Derivation of modern products from the by gone age has contributed much for the new modern living. It has been generally recognized that the various ethnicities in Borneo with different backgrounds had made Borneo a place of cultural diversity. However as time passed, most indigenous products are no longer in used or are stored in poor condition. Most products nearly aged over a century are still in a good condition with invaluable sentiments. Indigenous product is an artifact that had been designed and used by certain community of people such as tools, clothing, crafts and goods. Each design may have its own identity to the community. Some of the indigenous products which are no longer in use at present are kept by the community as their collections. The research reveals similarities in the interests of indigenous products, concerns and realities of indigenous communities from the different regions. The study suggests that learning about indigenous materials, such as hand-made products and machine-made products is necessary for the local industry to develop a product identity that is distinctly local. Most indigenous products show evidence of connections to old traditions, yet are new to the design market.

  • Because of the properties of software such as invisibility, complexity, and changeability, software configuration management (SCM) for software artifacts generated during software life-cycle has been used for guarantee of the quality of the software. However, the existing SCM system has only focused on code artifacts and software development document artifacts such as Software Requirements Specification (SRS), Software Design Description (SDD), and Software Test Description (STD). Moreover, software research-oriented project comes out late the code artifacts and the software development document artifacts. Therefore, there is a need for trace and management of software research document artifacts composed of highly abstracted non-functional requirements like 'the purpose of the project', 'the objectives', and 'the progress' before generation of the code artifacts and the software development document artifacts for a long time. Nevertheless, the existing SCM system cannot trace and manage them. In this paper, we propose content-based configuration management system comprised of the relevance link generation phase and content-based testing phase to trace and manage them. The preliminary application results show applicability and feasibility of the proposed system.
