  • In this paper, we propose an ellipsoid modeling method for coding of a face depth picture. The ellipsoid modeling is firstly based on a point of a nose tip which is defined as the lowest value of the depth in the picture. The proposed ellipsoid representation is simplified through a difference of depth values between in the nose tip and in left or right boundary point of the face. Parameters of the ellipsoid are calculated through coordinates and depth values to minimize differences from the actual depth pixels. A picture is predicted by the modeled ellipsoid for coding of the face depth picture. In simulation results, an average MSEs between the face depth picture and the predicted picture is measured as 20.3.

  • The Depth Picture can be Encoded by the Plane Coding Mode that is the Method for Coding Mode by Considering a Part of the Picture as the Plane. In this Paper, we Propose the Method of Determining the Variable-sized Block for Variable Block Coding in the Plane Coding Mode for the Depth Picture. The Depth Picture Can be Encoded in the Plane Coding Through Estimating the Plane Which is Close to Pixels in the Block Using Depth Information. The Variable-sized Block Coding in the Plane Coding can be Applied as Follows. It Calculates the Prediction Error between Predicted Depths by the Plane Estimation and the Measured Depths. If Prediction Error is Below the Threshold, the Block is Encoded by Current Size. Otherwise, it Divides the Block and Repeats Above. If the Block is Divided Below the Minimum Size, the Block is not Encoded by the Plane Coding Mode. The Result of the Simulation of the Proposed Method Shows that the Number of Encoded Block is Reduced to 19% as Compared with the Method Using the Fixed-sized Block in the Depth Picture Composed of one Plane.

  • The conventional 3D-HEVC uses the depth data of the other view instead of that of the current view because the texture data has to be encoded before the corresponding depth data of the current view has been encoded, where the depth data of the other view is used as the predicted depth for the current view. Whereas the conventional 3D-HEVC has no other candidate for the predicted depth information except for that of the other view, the scalable 3D-HEVC utilizes the depth data of the lower spatial layer whose view ID is equal to that of the current picture. The depth data of the lower spatial layer is up-scaled to the resolution of the current picture, and then the enlarged depth data is used as the predicted depth information. Because the quality of the enlarged depth is much higher than that of the depth of the other view, the proposed scheme increases the coding efficiency of the scalable 3D-HEVC codec. Computer simulation results show that the scalable 3D-HEVC is useful and the proposed scheme to use the enlarged depth data for the current picture provides the significant coding gain.

  • In this paper, an prediction method is proposed for coding of depth pictures using spherical modeling. An spherical surface which has the least error from original depth values is modeled in a block. Pixels in the block are predicted through the parameters of the modeled spherical surface. Simulation results show that average prediction errors and entropy powers are improved to 30% and 200% comparing to the intra prediction of H.264/AVC, selection ratios of the proposed spherical modeling mode is more than 25%.

  • This paper proposes an efficient depth-map coding method for generating virtual-view images in 3D-Video. Virtual-view images can be generated by the view-interpolation based on the depth-map of the image. A conventional video coding method such as H.264 has been used. However, a conventional video coding method does not consider the image characteristics of the depth-map. Therefore, this paper proposes an adaptive depth-map coding method that can select between the H.264/AVC coding scheme and the proposed gray-coded bit plane-based coding scheme in a unit of block. This improves the coding efficiency of the depth-map data. Simulation results show that the proposed method, in comparison with the H.264/AVC coding scheme, improves the average BD-rate savings by 7.43% and the average BD-PSNR gains by 0.5dB. It also improves the subjective picture quality of synthesized virtual-view images using decoded depth-maps.

  • MPEG 과 VCEG 의 공동협력팀인 JCT-VC(Joint Collaboration Team on Video Coding)에서는 H.264/AVC 보다 두 배 이상의 높은 부호화 효율을 목표로 HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) 표준화를 진행하고 있다.

  • In this paper, we propose an intra-picture prediction method by a quadratic surface modeling method for depth video coding. The pixels of depth video are transformed to 3D coordinates using distance information. A quadratic surface with the smallest error is found by least square method for reference pixels. The reference pixel can be either the upper pixels or the left pixels. In the intra prediction using the quadratic surface, two predcition values are computed for one pixel. Two errors are computed as the square sums of differences between each prediction values and the pixel values of the reference pixels. The pixel sof the block are predicted by the reference pixels and prediction method that they have the lowest error. Comparing with the-state-of-art video coding method, simulation results show that the distortion and the bit rate are improved by up to 5.16% and 5.12%, respectively.

  • In this paper, we propose an intra prediction method for depth picture using CNN and Attention mechanism. The proposed method allows each pixel in a block to predict to select pixels among reference area. Spatial features in the vertical and horizontal directions for reference pixels are extracted from the top and left areas adjacent to the block, respectively, through a CNN layer. The two spatial features are merged into the feature direction and the spatial direction to predict features for the prediction block and reference pixels, respectively. the correlation between the prediction block and the reference pixel is predicted through attention mechanism. The predicted correlations are restored to the pixel domain through CNN layers to predict the pixels in the block. The average prediction error of intra prediction is reduced by 5.8% when the proposed method is added to VVC intra modes.

  • Motion estimation in video coding greatly affects implementation complexity. In this paper, a reducing method of the complexity in motion estimation is proposed by using both the depth and color cameras. We obtain object information with video sequence from distance information calculated by depth camera, then perform labeling for grouping pixels within similar distances as the same object. Three search regions (background, inside-object, boundary) are determined adaptively for each of motion estimation blocks within current and reference pictures. If a current block is the inside-object region, then motion is searched within the inside-object region of reference picture. Also if a current block is the background region, then motion is searched within the background region of reference picture. From simulation results, we can see that the proposed method compared to the full search method remains the almost same as the motion estimated difference signal and significantly reduces the searching complexity.
