  • Purpose: To determine effects of irrational parenthood cognition, family support, and resilience on depression in infertile women. Methods: Subjects were 118 infertile women who agreed to participate in this study. Data were collected from April 16 to July 31, 2018. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson's correlation and multiple regression with SPSS WIN 23.0 program. Results: Depression significantly differed according to the burden of treatment cost and presence of people giving stress. Depression showed significantly positive correlation with irrational parenthood cognition and significantly negative correlations with family support and resilience. Factors affecting depression were irrational parenthood cognition, family support, and resilience. Irrational parenthood cognition had the greatest effect on depression. These three variables explained 35.8% of total variance. Conclusion: Irrational parenthood cognition, family support, and resilience affected depression of infertile women, with irrational parenthood cognition having the greatest effect. Therefore, it is important to develop and implement programs that can reduce irrational parenthood cognition and increase family support and resilience in order to lower depression of infertile women. • Purpose: This study aims to identify the factors influencing the depression of teachers in child day care centers. Methods: The study 181 teachers working at national/public or child day care centers certified by Seoul Metropolitan government in Seoul, South Korea. Data from September to October 2021, and emotional labor, job stress, ego resilience, stress resilience, and depression. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The average depression of child day care center's teachers 8.52±7.58 out of 60 points, and the depression group (above 21 points) was 9.4%. Depression in child day care center's teachers was positively correlated with job stress (r=.42, p<.001) and negatively correlated with ego resilience and stress resilience (r=-.55, p<.001). Factors affecting depression of child day care center's teachers were found to be job stress (p=0.005), ego resilience (p<.001), stress resilience (p=0.031) and the explanatory power of these variables was 39%. Conclusion: Results of this study indicate that in the future development of depression intervention programs for teachers of child day care centers, it is necessary to include measures that reduce job stress and strengthen ego resilience and stress resilience.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the mediating effects of health concern and depression on the stress and fatigue of COVID-19 self-quarantine. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 227 people with COVID-19 self-quarantine experience were recruited during May 2021. Participants were invited to complete self-reported questionnaires that measure stress, health concern, depression, fatigue and demographic information. The data obtained were analyzed using multiple regression and dual mediation model applying the PROCESS macro with 95% bias-corrected bootstrap confidence interval. Results: This study analyzed the direct effects of COVID-19 stress on the health concern, depression and fatigue. And COVID-19 stress had indirect effects on their fatigue via health concern and depression. Both health concern and depression had dual mediating effects in the influence of COVID-19 stress on fatigue. In the relationship between COVID-19 stress and fatigue, the mediating effect of depression was significant. Conclusion: Fatigue due to prolonged COVID-19 can be alleviated by managing stress and mediating health concern and depression, and so therefore active nursing intervention is required.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the roles and function of family in mediating the relationship between depression and quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Most studies have found that depression is particularly common in patients with PD and further associated with poor quality of life. Family function, as a mediator, is based on a strength orientation perspective that emphasizes not only their responsibilities and risks but also recuperative powers and growth potential. Methods: Overall 157 adults with idiopathic Parkinson's disease were enrolled in this study via outpatient clinic and completed a set of assessment to measure depression using BDI, family APGAR questionnaire, and patients' quality of life using PDQ-8. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the mediating role of family APGAR score in the relationship between BDI and PDQ-8. Results: Patients' depression, gait disturbance, duration of illness, and family function were statistically significant on quality of life. These factors accounted for 60% of the variance in quality of life. Family function has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between depression and quality of life. Conclusion: Findings from the study suggest that although PD patients' depression impacts their quality of life, by having strong family function, the extent to which depression impacts the quality of life can be favorably mitigated. Additionally, these outcomes have important implications for future model development regarding PD patients.

  • Background: As the population is aging, chronic diseases and depression are becoming the main problems in a country's healthcare system. In this study, we aimed to explore the associations between chronic diseases and depression among the elderly in South Korea. Methods: We analyzed 9,975 (men, 4,147; women, 5,828) respondents obtained from the 2014 National Survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Korean Older Persons. Our dependent variable was either 1 or 0 according to whether a respondent had depression or not, where depression was defined when the Short Form of Geriatric Depression Scale score was 8 or more points. Variables of interest were 24 types of chronic diseases and covariates included various socio-demographic and health behavior characteristics. We performed Rao-Scott chi-square tests and hierarchal logistic regression analyses by gender, reflecting the characteristics of the survey. Results: A significant difference was found in the proportion of having depression between genders (men 18.9% vs. women 23.4%). According to fully adjusted, multivariable analyses, for elderly men, relative to those without any chronic disease, the odds ratio of depression was 1.56 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10-2.22) in the stroke patients group and 1.82 (95% CI, 1.01-3.25) in the osteoporosis patients group. For elderly women, the odds ratio was 1.96 (95% CI, 1.28-3.00) in the fracture/dislocation and aftereffects patients group and 1.30 (95% CI, 1.03-1.64) in the group of patients with other diseases. Conclusion: Even after being adjusted for diverse characteristics, some chronic diseases were significantly associated with depression in the elderly and the association differed between genders. Therefore, public health and medical interventions are needed to manage such chronic diseases together with curing depression symptoms.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of fatigue, depression and sleep disorders and to find the correlation between them in patients with chronic liver disease. Methods: The participants consisted of 130 patients with chronic liver disease who visited the C University Hospital in Daegu, Korea from July to August, 2011. Data were collected by a self-reporting questionnaire of the Revised Piper Fatigue Scale, Depression Inventory (BDI) and Sleep Scale. Collected data were analyzed by using PASW Statistics 18.0 program for descriptive statistics, T-test, one-way ANOVA and Correlation Analysis. Results: There were significant differences in fatigue scores (t=8.415, $p$=.004) and depression scores (t=10.08, $p$=.002) between subjects with symptoms of liver disease and those with no symptoms. There was no significant difference in sleep disorder scores. In addition, there is a significant correlation between fatigue and depression (r=.641), linking fatigue and sleep disorders (r=.578), and between depression and sleep disorders (r=.572). Conclusion: It is necessary to develop multidisciplinary intervention programs to relieve patientsuffering.
