Variation of the Representation Ellipsoid for Refractive Index of Bi12GeO20Single Crystal by an Electric Field (전기장에 의한 Bi12GeO20 단결정의 굴절률 표시타원체의 변형)

  • We derived a formula which can calculate the space distribution of refractive index variation by an applied electric field about Bi$_{12}$ GeO$_{20}$ single crystal. Stereographic projection maps of refractive index variation by an applied electric field were made out using numerical value to be calculated by this formula. By the calculated results, since an electric field had applied to [(equation omitted) 1 1] direction and [1 (equation omitted) 1] direction of Bi$_{12}$ GeO$_{20}$ crystal, positive variation of the refractive index of [(equation omitted) 1 1] direction and [1 (equation omitted) 1] direction was the largest. The incremented refractive index per unit electric field was +3.2410${\times}$10$^{-11}$ V$^{-1}$ for the wavelength of 6328 $\AA$. Since an electric field had applied to [1 1 1] direction and [(equation omitted) 1] direction, negative variation of the refractive index of [1 1 1] direction and [(equation omitted) 1] direction was the largest. The decremented refractive index per unit electric field was -3.2410${\times}$10$^{-11}$ V$^{-1}$ for the wavelength of 6328 $\AA$.

  • The effect of the buyancy and thermocapillarity for differnent aspect ratio of flow field on melt motion and mass transfer has been numerically investigated in magnetic Czochralski crystal growth of silicon. During the process of crystal growth, the melt depth of crucible reduces so the aspect ratio of flow field also reduces. Therefore the shape of magnetic field of the flow field changes and the flow pattern also changes significantly. Together with the melt flow which forms the Marangoni convection (or thermocapillary flow) that comes from the inside the flow field, a flow circulation is observed near the corner close both to the crucible wall and the free surface. Due to this circulation, buoyancy effect has been turned out to be local rather than global. As the aspect ratio decreases, the radial component of the magnetic field prevails compared with the axial component in the flow field. Under the influence of this magnetic field, the melt flow and the temperature distribution in a meridional plane tend to depend on the radial position. As the aspect ratio decreases, the temperature gradient near the edge of the crystal decreases yielding smaller thermocapillarity, and the oxygen concentration near the crystal and the oxygen incorporation rate also decrease.

Modeling an e-Beam Addressed Liquid Crystal Projection Display

  • We have carried a theoretical study on e-beam addressed liquid crystal projection display in which the liquid crystal is switched by the electric field of the charge, produced by an electron beam, on the surface of the display. We calculated the electric field produced by the surface charge, the liquid crystal director configuration and the profile of the transmitted light. We studied the factors affecting the resolution of the display. We also studied the effect of pretilt angle on the performance of the display. The e-beam addressed liquid crystal projection display potentially has the advantages of high resolution and high brightness.

  • There are various application of liquid crystal materials to devices, especially, blue phase liquid crystal (BPLC) and nano-structured liquid crystal mixture have been studied recently because BPs existing temperature range has been expanded by polymer-stabilization and liquid crystal has been confined in room which has certain coherence length so that their particular characters, such as fast response time and optically isotropic state at no electric field, could apply to advanced liquid crystal display devices. However, there is an crucial problem which is high operating voltage from low Kerr constant and limited electric field utilization using in-plain electric field. In this paper, we will analyze cell structure in the way of using electric field and show effective electric field utilization to reduce operating voltage.

  • We have studied 90$^{\circ}$ twisted nematic mode switching by fringe electric field(F-TN mode) using a liquid crystal (LC) with negative dielectric anisotropy. In the device, two polarizers are parallel each other, electrodes exist only on bottom substrate, and one of rubbing direction is coincident with polarizer axis. Therefore, the cell shows a black state before a voltage is applied. With a bias voltage generating fringe-electric field, the LC twists perpendicular to fringe electric field such that the LCs are almost homogeneously aligned except near the bottom surface since the negative type of the LC is used. Consequently, the new device exhibits much wider viewing angle than that of the conventional TN mode due to in-plane switching and relatively high transmittance since the LC director above whole electrode area aligns parallel to the polarizer axis.

Effect of Internal Bias Field on Poling Behavior in Mn-Doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-29 mol%PbTiO3 Single Crystal

  • Electrical poling is a crucial step to convert ferroelectrics to piezoelectrics. Nevertheless, no systematic investigation on the effect of poling has been reported. Given that the poling involves an alignment of spontaneous polarization, the condition for poling should be different when a material has an internal bias field that influences the domain stability. Here, we present the effect of poling profile on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties in Mn-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-29 mol%PbTiO3 single crystal with an internal bias field. We showed that both the dielectric permittivity and the piezoelectric coefficient were further enhanced when the poling procedure ends with a field application along the opposite direction to the internal bias field. We expect that the current finding would give a clue to understanding the true mechanism for the electrical poling.

  • A suppression of turbulent fluid motion and a control of oxygen and dopants could be improved by application of magnetic field in Czochralski growth of silicon. The effect of an axial magnetic field on Czochralski system was numerically calculated. The fluid motions induced by temperature gradients and by crystal and crucible rotations were suppressed by magnetic force. The S/L interface was gradually flattened in proportion to the increase of magnetic field due to a reduced ascending velocity in the vicinity of center line. The t.emperature distributions in the melt at 8=0.3 Tesla were similar to those analyzed by the conduction heat transfer only. The dissipated amounts of heat flux from melt and crystal surfaces by Ar gas blowing was Jess than 3 %.

  • The crystallization behavior of amorphous silicon is affected by direction and intensity of electric field in FALC(Field-Aided Lateral Crystallization). Electric field was calculated in a simplified model using conductivity data of Mo, a-Si, $SiO_2$and boundary conditions for electric potential at the electrodes. The magnitude of electric field intensity in each corner of cathode was much larger than that in the center of patterns, and the electric field direction was 50~60 degree outside to cathode. And electric field intensity at a relatively small pattern was larger than that of a large pattern.

Petrology of Latite Ridge Latite in the East Tintic Velcanic Field, Utah in U.S.A. (미국 유타주 이스트틴틱 화산지대에 분포하는 Latite Ridge Latite에 대한 암석학적 연구)

  • The Latite Ridge Latite in the East Tintic volcanic field, Utah in USA occurs as a welded ash-flow tuff, has 63.7-66 wt% $SiO_2$ on an anhydrous basis, and shows calc-alkaline affinities. The rocks fall in the trachyte field of IUGS classification. It is characterized by unusally high $K_2O$ content (5.9-7.6 wt%), relatively high equilibration temperature (950-973$^{\circ}C$), and biotites with high $TiO_2$ content (7.4-8.2wt%). Various differentiation processes were tested using the XLFRAC program to infer the origin of the Latite Ridge Latite. The results suggests that crystal fractionation from shoshonite is one possible process to generate the Latite Ridge Latite. Shoshonite of the East Tintic volcanic field was possibly formed by crystal fractionation from a subduction-related K-, Mg-rich mafic magma.

  • We have studied electrode-optic characteristics of in-plane switching (IPS) of liquid crystal director driven by an oblique electric field. Because the conventional IPS mode does not have an electrode on top substrate, it shows not only slow response time due to weak electric field but also slow discharging problem when electrostatic field is generated after fabricating the cell. To solve these problems, we have formed additional electrode including dielectric layer in the inner part of the cell on top substrate and studied electrode-optic characteristics of the new device.
