  • Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungus that primarily causes opportunistic infections in immunocompromised hosts. It can also cause various infections in immunocompetent patients. Pulmonary cryptococcosis involving the lymph node is relatively rare in immunocompetent patients. In this report, a previously healthy 17-year-old girl presented with high-grade fever and persistent cough. Chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an anterior mediastinal conglomerate mass that expanded to the right supraclavicular area. Ultrasound-guided gun biopsy revealed histological evidence of cryptococcosis. Immunological screening tests did not identify immunodeficiency. She recovered completely with a combination therapy of amphotericin B and flucytosine for 2 weeks, followed by fluconazole for 8 months. The characteristics of cryptococcosis involving the mediastinal lymph node and the lung should be understood, and the possibility of cryptococcosis even in immunocompetent hosts should be considered.

  • We have been experimenting for industrialize four kinds of wildflowers(Smilax china, Saururus chinensis, Houttuynia cordata and Zizania caduciflora) which are used for Korean medicinal plants for a long time as Korean resources plants. Smilax china, Saururus chinensis, Houttuynia cordata was used for roots and Zizania caduciflora used for leaves. Extraction was carried out in 50% ethyl alcohol, which was concentrated by freezing the material and then injected at a low concentration of 100ppm. The results of the study on the antibacterial potential activity and antifungal potential activity using the four wildflowers strains were as follows. 1. The results of the sterilization and antibacterial potential activity and antifungal potential activity were as follows. Houttuynia cordata showed good inhibitory effect for Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The inhibitory power of Zizania caduciflora was proved to some extent. However, other cultivars showed little antibacterial and antifungal activity. 2. The antifungal potential activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Cryptococcus neoformans was small but some inhibition against Candida albicans was confirmed. There was no inhibition of other fungi potential at all.

  • Antifungal activities of the compounds isolated from Kalopanax pictus against representative fungi of dermatomycosis were investigated using paper disc diffusion method. It was found that kalopanaxsaponins A and I were effective in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans KCTC 1940 and Cryptococcus neoformans KCTC 7224 with minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) of 25${\mu}g$/ml. It showed that antifungal activity of both compounds have strong selectivity against the fungi of dermatomycosis.

  • Two neolignan compound, magnolol $(5,5^{l}-diallyl-2,2^{l}-dihydroxybiphenyl, 1)$ and honokiol $(5,5^{l}-diallyl-2,4^{l}-dihydroxybiphenyl, 2)$ were isolated from the stem bark of Magnolia obovata and evaluated for antifungal activity against various human pathogenic fungi. Compound 1 and 2 showed significant inhibitory activities against Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Microsporium gypseum, Epidermophyton floccosum, Aspergillus niger, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Candida albicans with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) in a range of $25-100{\mu}g/ml$. Therefore, compound 1 and 2 could be used as lead compounds for the development of novel antifungal agents.

  • The fungistatic and fungicidal activities of amphotericin B, fluconazole, miconazole, econazole, and 5-fluorocytosine against Saccharomyces cerevisiae were estimated in the presence of 1/2 minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and 1/2 minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of polygodial, respectively. Among them, the antifungal activities of miconazoles by polygodial was still shown against several yeast-like fungi including Candida albicans, Candida utilis, Cryptococcus neoformans, except for Candida krusei. The combination of polygodial with imidazole drugs against Saccharomyces cerevisiae was further examined using the macrobroth dilution checkerboard method. The fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) and the fractional fungicidal concentration (FFC) index between polygodial and miconazole were 0.16 and 0.19, while the combination of polygodial with econazole exhibited the FIC index of 0.19 and the FFC of 0.25, respectively. These results suggest that polygodial and the imidazoles on the fungistatic and fungicidal action are highly synergistic.

  • The clinical picture and CSF findings in cryptococcus meningitis may be identical with those of tuberculous meningitis. The differential diagnosis can be made by finding the budding yeast organism in the counting chamber or in stained smear, the detection of cryptococcal antigen in CSF by the latex agglutination test, and by culture of the fungus on Sabouraud agar. We experienced a case of cryptococcal meningitis in the 48 years old woman, which was confirmed by Indian ink preparation and culture.

  • A spayed female domestic short-hair cat of unknown age was admitted with a large proliferative mass in the face. Cytology and biopsy results suggested infection with Cryptococcus spp. A latex cryptococcal antigen agglutination test and an ALPHA cryptococcal antigen enzyme immunoassay yielded positive results. Results of canavanine-glycine-bromothymol blue agar test, serotyping and molecular typing by URA5 - RFLP and MLST analysis identified the isolates as C. neoformans var. grubii VNI/ST31. Two other cats were also diagnosed with the same methodology showing Crytococcosis with VNI/ST31. Cats presenting with facial or respiratory signs should be assessed for cryptococcosis in Korea.

  • Intracranial calcifications are relatively common computed tomographic findings in the field of neurosurgery, and cysticercosis, tuberculosis, HIV, and cryptococcus are acquired intracranial infections typically associated with calcifications. However, intracranial calcification caused by a bacterial brain abscess is rare. Here, we present a rare case of intracranial calcification caused by a bacterial brain abscess, from which staphylococcus hominis was isolated. To the best of our knowledge, no previous report has been published on intracranial calcification caused by bacterial brain abscess after decompressive craniectomy for traumatic brain injury. In this article, the pathophysiological mechanism of this uncommon entity is discussed and relevant literature reviewed.

Seventeen of Cryptococcus neoformans, eight of Candida albicans and Microporum gypseum, six of M. coorei, and three of Sporothrix schencrii were identified group. 3. An association of C. neoformans with avian habitats was found. Ten of the 11 isolates came from areas frequently by pigeons such as pigeon nest and pigeon excreta. 4. • The composition of essential oils in the leaves of three cultivars (Ban-Chung-Gat, Chung-Gat and Dolsan-Gat) of Brassica juncea L. were analyzed and their antifungal activity were investigated in this study. Allyl isothiocyanate, 2-phenyl ethyl isothiocyanate, 4-isothiocyanato-1-butene, 5-methyl isothiazole, benzene acetaldehyde, benzene propane nitrile and beta-ionone have been identified in all of the experimented oils. The main component of the oils from Ban-Chung-Gat and Chung-Gat was 2-phenyl ethyl isothiocyanate while allyl isothiocyanate was the representing compound in the oil of Dolsan-Gat. The antifungal activities of the oils were tested by micro broth dilution method and disc diffusion method. As the result the oils exhibited significant inhibiting activities against Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, Trichoderma viride, Candida albicans, C. utilis, C. tropicalis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Trichosporon mucoides, Trichophyton tonsurans and Geotrichum capitatum.
