  • Interior design education has been developed rapidly since the discipline established in Korea in 1980s but unfortunately the development was without any progressive transition until 1990's. When Korean Institute of Interior Design/KIID inaugurated in 1992, interior design education and related research activities began to be intensified. Despite its effort, there were still confusion about the discipline as there were many similar discipline tracks (architecture, design, fine art, & home economic, etc.) each having an own definition of interior design and introducing different aspects of educating the subject. Education program for interior design still not sufficiently supporting the needs of today's rapidly changing industry nor to prepare the diverse needs of the client. In order for interior design major to be effective in the future and fulfill the needs of current industry development within our society, re-evaluation of our current interior design educational programs in Korea is important. This study will be the beginning of a research series. As the first part of the research series, this particular study has been focused on reviewing of current status of interior design majors in the nation and its current condition. While making suggestion for the changes in curriculum, the following points will have to be considered as basic principle. First, understanding the duality of technology and design to accommodate the contents of design discipline. Second, understanding the need of practice and theory combined for practical education. And lastly, considering ways to adopt the human experience in order to develop creativity in oneself. The focus of this research is only on the interior design discipline, and research method as the following; first, analyze current status by reviewing admission data for 2010. Second, process a survey regarding the interior design education and practice-related issues in admissions and collect opinions from educators and professional designers in the field. Thirdly, with reference to previous studies, suggestions will be made for the discipline to be effective in the field. As mentioned earlier, this study series will continue and develop to suggest improvement in interior design program as well as to provide curriculums for students get ready for the industry with more up-to-date knowledges and creativities.

  • This is an experimental study that aimed to find out a possible relationships between the noise of the ship and the intelligent quotient, and the creativity of the crew member during June 5, to August 24, 1975. The experiment was carried out on the university training ship, the Oh-Bae-San Ho(1,126 tons), and the Kwan-Ak-San Ho (243 tons) and the training ship Baek-Kyung Ho (380 tons) of Je-ju College, where the total number of 144 students engaged on their tasks of practical exercise. And the following results were obtained : The decreases of I.Q. was evident as compared to the score obtained at the class room; soon after the embarking of the ship, the students on the deck decreased the score by $7\%$ of what they obtained at the class room while the students in the engine room decreased by $13\%$. The I.Q. was regaining the normal state after three days of embarking seemingly showing the fact that the students became adapted to the noise of the ship, but no remarkable improvement was visible during the period of 3 days to 35 days on the ship. One of the remarkable fact that had not been expected was that the problems for audio discernment was much easily solved in the midst of noise that made oral communication impossible (102 dB) than in the place of noise where conversation was possible(67 dB).

  • This study analyzed the Entrepreneurial Competencies of Science and Technology Personnel from the point of view of the industry's demanders. It is necessary to change institutional and policy support from quantitative support to improvement of qualitative level. Specifically, this study used the Borich's Needs Assessment Model to determine what capabilities are currently lacking and which should be supplemented. As a result of analysis, it showed that the current level was lower than expected level. Especially, expectation level was high in order of team working, problem solving ability, communication, abstract thinking, job knowledge, Autonomy, leadership, risk-taking, and commercialization are all lower than the overall average. In the analysis of educational need, the most important factor of entrepreneurial competence appeared in order of problem solving ability, teamworking, job related knowledge, abstract thinking, and communication. This means that it is necessary to logically solve the problems that are encountered in various situations in the organization by using cooperation between the teams and their own job knowledge. In addition, education should be conducted to effectively communicate the results to others.

  • This study aims to investigate science teaching and learning for the gifted in comparison with regular classrooms in elementary schools. A questionnaire was developed to survey gifted and general students' perceptions to elementary science teaching and teaming with employing a teaching and learning model for the gifted by Maker and Neilson (1995, 1996). The 28 item questionnaire consisted of four categories of content, teaching and teaming process, student product, and learning environment, and each category included six to nine items. Randomly selected 114 students from gifted classes and 99 students for regular classes responded to the questionnaire through the use of five-point Likert scale. It was found that there are significant differences between gifted and regular classes of science at all four categories of the teaching and learning model for the gifted. Therefore, science teaching and teaming for the gifted seemed to be differentiated from regular classes and emphasized students' creativity. However, no differences were appeared in a few items: study of gifted people and research methods (gifted=3.0; regular=.21 F=2.54), students' freedom of choice for topics of lessons, tasks, etc., (gifted=3.1; regular=3.0, F=0.31), student product addressed to real audience (gifted=2.8, regular=2.6, F=0.96), and students' high mobility to seek for data in library, etc. during class periods (gifted=2.3, regular= 2.3, F=0.01). It was concluded that science education for the gifted in Korea calls for quality improvement in terms of teaching and teaming in various aspects.

  • This study investigated the schemes to apply key competencies to middle school math teaching. Key competencies (KCs, hereafter), however, have been discussed only at the national-level general curriculum. Through the survey with mathematics educators, we selected key competencies that can be better developed through mathematics subject. We investigate ways to apply key competencies into math teaching and learning with the math-talented students who usually lack interpersonal skills and communication skills. Along with KC goals, we selected graphs (or graphing skills in math contents) as learning goals, and we designed and implemented competency-based instruction for the gifted. Through participant observation of math teaching and learning, we identified students' improvement in interpersonal skills and communication skills. We also identified students' skill development in other key competencies such as creativity, problem solving, information processing skills, etc., which can be developed through mathematics teaching and learning. Through this study, we found out that key competencies can be developed through mathematics teaching and we need in-depth studies on this matter.

  • Urban planning and engineering undergraduate students need to understand the earth physical systems and that how human beings interact with the earth systems to planning and engineering urban area. The eco-friendly or geo-friendly design and planning of an urban area is a critical issue not only for economic benefits but more importantly for the sustainable future of urban life. However, little study has been done dealing with the urban engineering students' understanding of the earth as a system and what pedagogical approach is appropriate to improve their understanding of the earth as a system. This study is to investigate the impact of a purposely designed ESS course on urban engineering students' understanding of the earth as a system and their perceptions about the instructional approaches of the course on their learning competency. This study utilized a mixed-methodology with three main data sources: concept maps, student's perception survey about their learning competency, and course contents. Both the survey and concept maps were analyzed quantitatively as well as qualitatively. The result of this study showed that the urban engineering students' experience of team-based research about the topic they chose based on their own interest had a positive impact on their understanding of the earth as a system and their learning competency. The results of this study suggest that structuring and presenting the earth system contents in the context of engineering students' understanding and their future career be effective not only for the improvement of students' content knowledge but also for the enhancement of their learning competency such as creativity and problem-solving skills in everyday life situation.
