The applicability of resistivity cone for contaminant investigation in farm land was examined in laboratory and in-situ. To verify the resistivity variations in sand with contaminants, laboratory experiment used soil resistivity test box was performed. Heavy metal and others ions were appeared steep variations in low concentration. Pilot test results were the same as laboratory test results. In the in-situ test used resistivity cone, resistivities of waste landfill layer were low than the common soil layers and resistivities had been difference with concentration of contaminant components. Therefore contaminant investigation in farm land using resistivity cone was expected very effective.
A windows-based software package, named DREDGE, is developed for estimating sediment resuspension and contaminant release during dredging operations. DREDGE allows user to enter the necessary dredge information, site characteristics, operational data, and contaminant characteristics, then calculates an array of concentration using the given values. The program mainly consists of the near-field models, which are obtained empirically, for estimating sediment resuspension and the far-field models, which are obtained analytically, for suspended sediment transport. A linear equilibrium partitioning approach is applied to estimate particulate and dissolved contaminant concentrations. This software package which requires only a minimal amount of data consists of three components; user input, tabular output, and graphical output. Combining the near-field and far-field models into a user-friendly windows-based computer program can greatly save dredge operator's, planners', and regulators' efforts for estimating sediment transports and contaminant distribution.
Surfactant-enhanced ozone sparging (SEOS), an advanced version of SEAS (surfactant-enhance air sparging) was introduced in this study for the first time for removal of non-volatile contaminant from aquifer. The advantages of implementing SEAS, enhanced air saturation and expanded zone of sparging influence, are combined with the oxidative potential of ozone gas. Experiments conducted in this study were tow fold; 1-dimensional column experiments for the changes in the gas saturation and contaminant removal during sparging, and 2-dimensional box model experiment for the changes in the size of zone of influence and contaminant removal. An anionic surfactant (SDBS, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate) was used to control surface tension of water. Fluorescein sodium salt was used as a representative of watersoluble contaminants, for its fluorescence which is easy to detect when it disappears due to oxidative degradation. Three different gases (air, high-concentration ozone gas, and low-concentration ozone gas) were used for the sparging of 1-D column experiment, while two gases (air and low-concentration ozone gas) were used for 2-D box model experiment. When SEOS was performed for the column and box model, the air saturation and the zone of influence were improved significantly compared to air sparging without surface tension suppression, resulted in effective removal of the contaminant. Based on the experiments observations conducted in this study, SEOS was found to maintain the advantages of SEAS with further capability of oxidative degradation of non-volatile contaminants.
Spatial distribution of groundwater contaminant concentration has special characteristics such as approximate symmetric profile, for example, in the transversal direction to groundwater flow direction, a certain ratio in directional propagation distances, etc. To obtain a geophysically appropriate semivariogram which is a key factor in estimation of groundwater contaminant concentration at desired locations, these special characteristics should be considered. Specifically, the concepts of symmetry and ratio are considered in this paper. By applying these two concepts, significant improvement of semivariograms, estimation variances, and final estimation results compared with the ones by conventional approaches which usually do not account for symmetry and ratio are shown using field experimental data.
In this paper, a method for finding appropriate symmetric axes is introduced. Statistical analyses for the choices of symmetric axes and mathematical models for semivariograrns are performed. After implementing symmetry, the corresponding semivariograrns, kriging variances, and final estimated results show significant improvement compared with those obtained by conventional approaches which usually do not account for symmetry.
Pollutants from industry, mining, agriculture, and other sources have contaminated sediments in many surface water bodies. Sediment contamination poses a severe threat to human health and environment because many toxic contaminants that are barely detectable in the water body can accumulate in sediment at much higher levels, the purpose of this study was to make convenient sampling method and optimal treatment of sediment for water quality improvement in reservoir or stream based on an evaluation of degree of contamination. Results for analysis of S-reservoir sediments were observed that copper concentration of almost areas were higher than the regulation of soil pollution (50 mg/1) for the riverbed. S-stream sediments were observed that copper, arsenic and TPH concentration of almost areas were exceeded soil pollution concerning levels for factorial areas. We used Remscreen(version. 1.0) program which is contaminated soil recovery program to select optimal treatment method of contaminant sediments. The result was shown in the order of Thermal Calcination > Excavation, Retrieval and Off-site Disposal(comparative less then contaminant) > Low Temperature Thermal Desorption + Solidification/Stabilization.
This paper presents results of modeling of the passive contaminant diffusion from a continuous line finite-size source located on the underlying surface of a neutral near-ground atmospheric layer obtained by using the non-local two-parameteric turbulence model and the transport equation of mean concentration. In the proposed diffusion model the turbulent diffusion coefficient changes not only with the vertical coordinate but also with the distance downstream from the source according to the experimental data. The results of the modeling reproduce structural features of the concentration field.
The purpose of this study is to suggest conceptual models based on finite numerical method that can be used to assess contaminant transport through subsurface and estimate exposed concentration at contaminated site. This study tested various assumptions of the numerical models for contaminant transport in unsaturated and saturated zones to simulate the pathways to the human exposal point. For this purpose, models for seven possible scenarios of contaminant transport were simulated using the numerical code MODFLOW and MT3D. The simulation results that showed different peak concentrations and travel times were compared. In conclusion, the potential utility of the numerical models in the site specific risk analysis suggested as well as future research ramifications.
