This study presents the dynamic wetting characteristics of an impact droplet on hole-patterned textured surfaces. The flat surfaces were manufactured by a drilling machine to generate the micro-order holes, leading to make the surface hydrophobic. Other flat surfaces were fabricated by the anodizing technique to make hydrophilic texture surfaces with a nanometer order. For hydrophilic and hydrophobic textured surfaces with similar texture area fractions, the impinging droplet experiments were conducted and compared with flat surface cases. As results, an anodized textured surface decreases apparent equilibrium contact angle and increases contact diameters, because of increase in contact area and surface energy. This is attributed to more penetration inside holes from larger capillary pressure on nanometer-order holes. On the other hand, temporal evolution of the contact diameter is smaller for the hydrophobic textured surface from less penetration on the micro-order holes.
Surface characterization of materials has been considered critical in the development of biomaterials, as many unfavorable responses from the body occur at the interface between a material and the body component. The contact angle measurement is one means to characterize the surface properties and to correlate them to the biocompatibility of materials. In this paper, surface characteristics of silk fibroin/S-carboxymethyl kerateine, representative fibrous proteins, were investigated by contact angle measurements of ESCA. The biocompatibility of the blends was evaluated based on minimal interfacial free energy concept, and compared with other potential biomaterials. It was also hypothesized that the enhanced surface polarity of the blends was generated from the conformational transition of proteins. This approach to evaluate the biocompatibility of materials based on surface characteristics may find wide utility in many biomedical applications.
There is few research about contact problem for a rigid surface with an arbitrary shape in SPH. The variational equation based on the virtual work principle is derived and its solution is obtained by the penalty method. It is proposed a new method that can determine the parameters for a penetration and a penetration rate used in the penalty method. The reproducing condition is adopted to correct the deficiency of kernel on the boundary. In order to calculate a penetration of particles, after checking boundary particles for deformable body boundary normal vectors were determined on the rigid surface. Numerical simulations for models which have rigid surface with an arbitrary shape were conducted to validate the proposed method in 2D. The results of those analysis represent that the contact algorithm proposed in this study works properly.

Nd:YAG($\lambda$=266 nm, pulse) laser beam was irradiated on the PDMS surface to improve its chemical reaction, wettability, adhesive property. The various surface modification methods of PDMS were already studied using oxygen plasma, ozone and corona discharge. The surface modification using laser has the advantage of the simple experiment that only directly irradiated laser beam on the PDMS surface in the air. After the laser treatment, the PDMS surface was investigated using a contact angle measuring instrument. The contact angle was decreased with a increase of the surface oxygen content. In conclusion, the wettability of PDMS surface was improved by the laser treatment without changing of its bulk characteristics.
Generally, Hertz theory is used to analyze the contact problem of two bodies. It is simple derivation of solution in the contact part. And calculation time is short Moreover, it can mean well that many wear occurs relatively. However, material property becomes plastic deformation when large perpendicular pressure acts on a small contact surface product. In this case, Hertz theory is inapplicable. Therefore this thesis carried the finite element analysis in consideration of material elasticitystrain and the shape of the geometric from contact point. And it compared with Hertz theory that change of the contact surface and contact pressure.
In this study, a contact algorithm for the finite element analysis of free surface contact problem in materials forming is presented. The proposed contact algorithm consists of two parts. The first is the contact searching part, and the second, the constraint part. The contact searching algorithm does not require any a priori knowledge of the pairs of contact nodes or segments and the impenetrability constraint is satisfied using the penalty function scheme. void colsure in open-die forging was simulated to verify the accuracy and capability of the currently developed contact algorithm. The simulation results, obtained from ABAQUS simulation, were compared well to the experimental data available in the literature.
Through this study, we investigate the effects of ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) technology on the fatigue life of needle roller bearings. The fatigue life of untreated and UNSM-treated needle roller bearings is evaluated using a roller fatigue tester at various contact stress levels under oil-lubricated conditions. We can ascertain that the fatigue life of an UNSM-treated needle roller bearing was extended by approximately 34.3% in comparison with an untreated one, where the effectiveness of UNSM technology diminishes with increasing contact stress. The surface roughness and surface hardness of needle roller bearings before and after being treated by UNSM technology are compared and discussed to understand the role of UNSM technology in improving the fatigue life of needle roller bearings. In addition, a fractograph of the damaged bearings is observed using a scanning electron microscopy to shed light on the fracture mechanisms of bearings under different contact stress levels. We can therefore conclude that the application of UNSM technology to the needle roller bearings improves the fatigue life by reducing the friction coefficient and increasing the wear resistance; this may be attributed to a reduction in surface roughness from 0.5 to $0.149{\mu}m$ and an increase in surface hardness from 58 to 62 HRc.
