A Decision Support Methodology for Remediation Planning of Concrete Bridges

  • Bridges are critical and valuable components in any road and rail transportation network. Therefore bridge remediation has always been a top priority for asset managers and engineers, but identifying the nature of true defect deterioration and associated remediation treatments remains a complex task. Nowadays Decision Support Systems (DSS) are widely used to assist decision makers across an extensive spectrum of unstructured decision environments. The main objective of this research is to develop a requirements-driven methodology for bridge monitoring and maintenance which has the ability to assess the bridge condition and find the best remediation treatments using Simple Multi Attribute Rating Technique (SMART); with the aim of maintaining a bridge within acceptable limits of safety, serviceability and sustainability.

  • The cut slope sliding which has been frequently encountered in Pohang area has been reported due to the rapid reduction of shear strength in mudstone after being exposed to the air. Mudstone has characteristics that it has high enough strength and stiffness in a dry condition, but the strength and stiffness decrease in a wet condition with groundwater infiltration. The case study in this paper shows that mudstone which had enough strength in a boring stage has lost the strength after installing PRD steel pipe pile inducing an insufficient bearing capacity, which has been ascertained by the static load test. Test construction has been performed to investigate the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone with various methods such as MSG (Micro Silica Grouting) around the tip and side of a pile, the perimeter grouting combined with Micro pile reinforcement, and concrete filling after tip reinforcing grouting. From the test construction, MSG has been turned out to be the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone, which has been confirmed by the static load test.

  • The object of this study is vibrating compaction and curing method in the production process of Design concrete for precast concrete(Design-PC) product.   • Ultra-high-strength concrete exposed to high temperature is likely to cause spalling. Spalling is caused by the vapor pressure of the concrete, and the vapor pressure may be different depending on the heating conditions of the concrete. Therefore, in this study, a ring-type restrained specimen was fabricated using ultra-high-strength concrete and the vapor pressure generated in the concrete by heating condition(rapid and slow heating) was evaluated.

  • The high-temperature creep of Ultra-High-Strength Concrete (UHSC) has been investigated in this study. The purpose of this study is to evaluated total strain and high-temperature creep at elevated temperatures under loading condition of UHSC. As results, Total strain of UHSC increased showing shrinkage with increasing compressive strength. The high-temperature creep of UHSC increased with the temperature and higher level of compressive strength showed bigger high-temperature creep.

  • Recently, the research on durability of concrete proceed rapidly in the building industry. Deterioration due to do-icing salts occurs in practice in bridge structure, dike, barrier and similar structure. This paper reports the results of effect of chlorides on the freeze-thaw properties of concrete bridge deck in winter. The case fresh water condition where the concrete will receives a freez-thaw effect compared to decrease of durability quotient a lot occurs is a possibility of knowing from brine condition.

  • The floor slip test method using O-Y·PSM was developed based on the risk assessment and sense of slip by the users implementing actions such as changing walking direction on a floor. This test method is regulated under the Korea Industrial Standard KS M 3510, and in the Korea Industrial Standard KS F 3230, the article of KS M 3510 is cited. Yet, in the standard, the surface condition of test or slip adjustment method is merely mentioned or difficult to be found, and thus it creates confusion in floor slip test using O-Y·PSM. Therefore, this study is to provide the useful data to revise the relative standard through the standardization study including various surface conditions of sample and slip adjustment method used in floor slip test method using O-Y·PSM.

Analytical approximate solutions for large post-buckling response of a hygrothermal beam

  • This paper deals with large deformation post-buckling of a linear-elastic and hygrothermal beam with axially nonmovable pinned-pinned ends and subjected to a significant increase in swelling by an alternative method. Analytical approximate solutions for the geometrically nonlinear problem are presented. The solution for the limiting case of a string is also obtained. By coupling of the well-known Maclaurin series expansion and orthogonal Chebyshev polynomials, the governing differential equation with sinusoidal nonlinearity can be reduced to form a cubic-nonlinear equation, and supplementary condition with cosinoidal nonlinearity can also be simplified to be a polynomial integral equation. Analytical approximations to the resulting boundary condition problem are established by combining the Newton's method with the method of harmonic balance. Two approximate formulae for load along axis, potential strain for free hygrothermal expansion and periodic solution are established for small as well as large angle of rotation at the end of the beam. Illustrative examples are selected and compared to "reference" solution obtained by the shooting method to substantiate the accuracy and correctness of the approximate analytical approach.

  • In this study, a database composed by 46 cases of tunnel collapses has been built up. Based on the database, comprehensive data analysis is carried out, providing us a number of the technical lessons, which can be considered in future design and construction to minimize possibility of tunnel collapse disaster. For making a better understanding, the technical lessons are given in two divisions: mountain tunnel and urban tunnel. Tunnel collapses taking place in the former tunnel are generally due to bad discontinuity condition of jointed rock mass. Otherwise, urban tunnel has weak condition generally on ground water and weathering of ground. Most of technical comments given in this paper are made based on the cases of tunnel collapses only used in this study, so that the comments seems to be hard to be available to all the tunnelling cases. However, the comment should be valuable technical lessons for tunnel engineers to consider in tunnel design or construction.

  • Recently, the strenuous industrial waste is scattered and one of the oyster also make the serious environmental contamination. The purpose of this study is investigating an utilization ability as calcium binder of the oyster with Hwang-To according to a rate(10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%). This study grasp physical properties of the oyster powder, bake production of the paste, and conduct the flow test, stiff time test and strength test. According to baking condition, strength of $1000^{\circ}C$(120minutes, rate 30%) is higher than any other condition. The oyster powder from above $900^{\circ}C$ seem possibility as binder hereafter. It is thought that the continuous research will be necessary.
