  • CAD/CAM system may have such advantages of cost reduction, production time shortening, and product quality improvement. But current advanced versions of CAD/CAM system for 3-D NC data generation are too much expensive to purchase and too difficult to make full use for small-scale manufacturers whose main products are of 2-D simple shapes. The objective of this paper is to introduce a cost-effective way to 2-D NC data generation with a widely spread CAD software. Using VISUAL LISP in the well-known AUTO-CAD, the contents and steps of an automatic NC data generation program are presented for 2-D machining of contours and pockets. To approve the usefulness of program, a test application to a real part is exhibited also.

  • In order to reduce the lead-time and cost, the technology of rapid prototyping (RP) has been widely used. A new rapid prototyping process, transfer-type variable lamination manufacturing process by using expandable polystyrene foam (VLM-ST), has been developed to reduce building time, apparatus cost and additional post-processing. At the same time, VLM Slicer, the CAD/CAM software for VLM-ST has been developed. In this study, algorithms for accuracy improvement of VLM-ST, which include offset and overrun of a cutting path and generation of a reference shape are developed. Offset algorithm improves cutting accuracy, overrun algorithm enables the VLM-ST process to make a shape of sharp edge and reference shape generation algorithm adds additional shape which makes off-line lamination easier. In addition, proposed algorithms are applied to practical CAD models for verification.

  • This study provides a methodology for development of the Seismic Damage Evaluation System (SDES) in Korea. Major systems and status of database related to road networks in Korea are investigated to analyze the usability of the required information for developing the SDES. In this study, the SDES is composed of four components that are the road network component, the ground motion component, the fragile structure component, and the cost component. In addition, the procedures for the construction of database which support the SDES is proposed, and a prototype of the SDES for expressway of Korea is developed based on the developed methodology. The National Geospatial Information System (NGIS) and the National Earthquake Information System (NEIS) are used to develop the road network component and ground motion component, respectively. For the fragile structure component and the cost component, Highway Bridge Management System (HEMS) was used.

  • In this paper, a new pixel decimation algorithm for the estimation of motion vector is proposed. In traditional methods, the computational cost can be reduced since only part of the pixels are used for motion vector calculation. But these methods limits the accuracy ofmotion vector because of the same reason. We derive a selection criteria of subsampled pixels that can reduce the probablity of false motion vector detection based on stochastic point of view. By using this criteria, a new pixel decimation algorithm that can reduce the prediction error with similar computational cost is presented. The simulation results applied to standard images haveshown that the proposed algorithm has less mean absolute prediction error than conventional pixel decimation algorithm.

  • In this article, we propose exponentially fitted error correction methods(EECM) which originate from the error correction methods recently developed by the authors (see [10, 11] for examples) for solving nonlinear stiff initial value problems. We reduce the computational cost of the error correction method by making a local approximation of exponential type. This exponential local approximation yields an EECM that is exponentially fitted, A-stable and L-stable, independent of the approximation scheme for the error correction. In particular, the classical explicit Runge-Kutta method for the error correction not only saves the computational cost that the error correction method requires but also gives the same convergence order as the error correction method does. Numerical evidence is provided to support the theoretical results.

  • Recently, the importance of multi-objective optimization techniques and stochastic search methods is increasing. The stochastic search methods have the concepts of the survival of the fittest and natural selection such as genetic algorithms(GA), simulated annealing(SA) and evolution strategies (ES). As many accidents of oil tankers cause marine pollution, oil tankers of double hull or mid deck structure are being built to minimize the marine pollution. For the improvement of oil tanker design technique, an efficient optimization technique is proposed in this study. Multi-objective optimization problem of weight and cost of double hull and mid deck tanker is formulated. Discrete design variables are used considering real manufacturing, and the concept of relative production cost is also introduced. The ES method is used as an optimization technique, and the ES algorithm was developed to generate a more efficient Pareto optimal set.

  • This paper describes the application of discretized continuum-type optimality criteria (DCOC) for the reinforced concrete continuous beams. The cost of construction as objective function which includes the costs of concrete, reinforced steel, formwork is minimized. The design constraints include limits on the maximum deflection in a given span, on bending and shear strengths, optimality criteria is given based on the well known Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions, followed by an iterative procedure for designs when the design variables are the depth and the steel ratio. The self-weight of the beam is included in the equilibrium equation of the real system. Two numerical examples of reinforced concrete continuous beams with rectangular cross-section are solved to show the applicability and efficiency for the DCOC-based technique

  • This paper describes the application of discretized continuum-type optimality criteria (DCOC) for the multispan partially prestressed concrete beams. The cost of construction as objective function which includes the costs of concrete, prestressing steel, non-prestressing steel and formwork is minimized. The design constraints include limits on the maximum deflection, flexural and shear strengths, in addition to ductility requirements, and upper and lower bounds on design variables as stipulated by the design code. Based on Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions, the optimality criteria are explicitly derived in terms of the design variables-effective depth, eccentricity of prestressing steel and non-prestressing steel ratio. The prestressing profile is prescribed by parabolic functions. The self-weight of the structure is included in the equilibrium equation of the real system, as is the secondary effect resulting from the prestressing force. Two numerical examples of multispan PPC beams with rectangular cross-section are solved to show the applicability and efficiency fo the DCOC-based technique.

  • Design of civil infrastructures is generally based on 2-D drawings and analyses. Design provisions also specify the limit states using member based equations. Most construction projects are done through collaboration of engineers who have different specialized knowledge. Information technologies can dramatically enhance the performance of the collaboration. For the information transfer, we need a mediator between engineers. Object based 3-D models are useful for the communication and for the owners who have to maintain whole the information of infrastructures. In this paper, basic guidelines for the 3-D design according to design phases. Adequate interoperability of 3-D objects from any CAD system is essential for the collaboration. Owners, contractors and design consultants were considered as users of 3-D objects. Cost and performance of each design phases was investigated through the existing data.
