Physical Activity and Cancer Prevention: Awareness and Meeting the Recommendations among Adult Saudis

  • Background: There is a scarcity of information about the proportion of the adult Saudi population that meet the recommended guidelines of physical activity (PA) to reduce cancer risk. Moreover, their awareness about the role of PA in cancer prevention is unclear. Objectives: This cross-sectional study aimed at estimating the proportion of adult Saudis meeting the PA guidelines, specifically those recommended by American Cancer Society (ACS) for cancer prevention, and to assess the public awareness about the role of PA in cancer prevention. Materials and Methods: Using a multistage sampling method, 2,127 adult Saudis of both genders were recruited from 6 urban and 4 rural primary health care centers in Al Hassa, Saudi Arabia. Participants were personally interviewed to gather information about their sociodemographic characteristics, searching activity about PA and cancer, and the time spent in leisure time PA (moderate and vigorous)/week using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire with show cards. Finally, items about the role of PA in cancer risk reduction were inquired. Results: Of the included participants, 11.6% met the recommendations for cancer prevention (${\geq}45$ minutes of moderate-vigorous PA activity/${\geq}5$ days/week or 225 minutes/week). Multivariate regression showed that being male (AOR=1.49, CI=1.09-2.06), <20 years of age (AOR=3.11, CI=2.03-4.76), and unemployed (AOR=2.22, CI=1.57-3.18) were significant predictors for meeting PA recommendations for cancer prevention. Only 11.4% of the sample indicated correctly the frequency and duration of PA required for an average adult to be physically active and while >70% of them indicated the role of PA in prevention of hypertension, coronary heart disease and lowering elevated blood cholesterol, only 18.6% and 21.7% correctly mentioned the role of PA in reducing colon and breast cancer risk, respectively. Poor knowledge was found among those with less than college education and aged ${\geq}50$ years. The level of knowledge was significantly positively correlated with total leisure time PA of the participants. Conclusions: A minority of adult Saudis in Al Hassa was aware about the role of PA in cancer prevention and engaged in sufficient LTPA for cancer risk reduction benefits, highlighting the need for public health actions to include policies and programs that address factors deterring their participation in LTPA and increasing their awareness with remedies to manage the prevalent misconceptions.

초등학교 학교 텃밭의 조성현황과 운영실태 분석 - 전북지역을 중심으로 (Set up and Running Status of School Gardening at Elementary Schools - Focus on Jeollabuk-do)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the set up and running status of school gardening at elementary schools in Jeollabuk-do. Among 416 elementary schools in Jeollabuk-do, 164 schools (39.4%) had school gardens. Ninety-seven schools in cities and 67 in counties had school gardens. The total area and school garden size at schools in Jeollabuk-do were $45,490m^2$ and $277m^2$ per school, respectively, as well as $1.6m^2$ per students. School gardens varied in type, and percentages of outdoor and off-campus gardens were 67.2% and 17.2%, respectively. There were differences in the set up, type of garden, annual operating budget, and participants in school garden programs according to the location (city or county) of the school The installation and automation of facilities in the garden (such as greenhouse, tool shed, resource recycling facility, etc.) were poor. Most schools grew various kinds of plants, including vegetables, crops, ornamentals, and fruits. Teachers most often operated school gardens and taught students. Teachers had difficulty managing school gardens due to absence of knowledge about sustaining gardens. Most respondents reported the need for a school garden training program. Sixty-one percent of schools reported that the garden was used for academic instruction, especially during class. The majority of respondents agreed that school gardens have a positive effect and wanted to increase classes related to school gardens. Accordingly, in order to sustain school gardens and maximize their effects, systematic and customized support is needed that considers the characteristics and circumstances of the school. The facilities and features of the garden should be improved, and the school garden training program for teachers should attempt to reduce the effort required to manage the garden and increase utilization efficiency. In addition, participation of garden coordinators, parents, and community volunteers in managing gardens and implementing garden lessons is required.

학습코칭과 보상시스템의 융합적 운영이 학습공동체 참여 대학생들의 학업적 자기효능감과 학습성과에 미치는 효과 (The effect of the convergent operation of learning coaching and reward system on learning community students' academic self-efficacy and learning outcome)

  • 학습코칭과 보상시스템의 융합적 운영이 대학생들의 학업적 자기효능감과 학습성과에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 하였다. 2학기에는 학습코칭과 학습성과에 따른 보상시스템을 마련하여 사전 공지하고 그에 따른 학업적 자기효능감을 측정하고자 학습공동체 운영 전 후 설문조사를 실시하였다. 또한 참여학생의 학습성향 진단하기 위해 G대학 재학생에게 MLST-II 학습전략진단검사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 G대학 재학생은 학습동기와 결과기대가 낮고 정체형과 잠재형 학습자가 많아 학습공동체 참여 과정에서 학습코칭에 거부감을 느끼고 부정적인 결과를 예상하였지만 2학기 학습공동체 운영 결과 학업적 자기효능감과 학습성과에 유의미한 향상을 나타내었다. 그러므로 부정적인 학습성향의 학생이라도 자율성에 맡기기 보다는 전문가의 학습코칭과 보상시스템이 학생들의 학업적 자기효능감과 학습성과에 긍정적인 결과를 야기하므로 교육 현장에서도 이러한 융합적인 프로그램 운영방식에 대한 고려가 필요할 것이다.

주민참여를 통한 농촌중심지 활성화 방안 연구 - 정읍시 내장상동을 중심으로 - (The Activation Plan of an Agricultural Region through Resident Participation - Focusing on Jeongeupsi Naejangsangdong -)

  • 과거 농외소득 향상을 목적으로 하던 마을중심의 농촌지역개발사업이 최근 농어촌중심지를 중심으로 진행되고 있다. 농어촌중심지 사업은 지역주민의 소득 이외에 지역주민의 생활여건 개선을 도모하는 것을 목표로 한다. 시대가 변하면서 농촌과 농촌 중심지의 모습도 다양하게 변화하였다. 농촌과 도시가 하나의 지역으로 융합되어 한 지역에서 농촌과 도시의 복합적 성격을 띠는 러번지역이 발생함에 따라, 현대사회에서 농촌의 중심지는 자연스럽게 도시적 인프라를 갖춘 러번지역으로 집중되게 되었다. 본 연구의 대상인 정읍시 내장상동 또한 농촌의 자연환경을 가지고 있지만, 동시에 도시지역의 구조 형태를 가지는 도농통합적 생활권 중심지이다. 기존 정부의 하향식 농촌개발사업으로 나타난 문제점을 해결하기 위해 러번지역에 조직되어 있는 공동체를 활용한 주민참여형 사업이 진행되어야 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 도시적 성격을 가진 러번지역의 특성과 주민들의 수요분석을 통해 생활서비스 증진을 위한 러번지역의 중심지 활성화 계획을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 주민 워크숍 및 시범활동과 같은 주민역량강화 단계를 기본계획수립 과정에 반영함으로써 주민들의 자생력을 강화시키고자 하였다. 연구는 대상지 현황 및 여건분석, 기본구상 및 발전방향설정, 세부사업계획, 사업추진계획의 과정으로 진행되었으며, 현장조사와 주민수요를 기반으로 도보환경 개선, 공동체 기반시설 조성, 살기 좋은 생활환경 조성의 세 가지 목표를 설정하였다. 또한 본 연구에서는 러번지역이라는 발전된 형태의 농촌지역에서 주민들이 실제로 필요로 하고, 이미 구성되어 있는 지역공동체 등의 활동 단체를 사업의 실행주체로 참여시킬 수 있는 주민참여형 농촌중심지 활성화 방안을 제시하였다. 늘어나는 러번형태의 지역 특성에 맞는 주민 자생적 농촌중심지 활성화 계획을 통해 지역의 능동적이고 성공적인 성장을 기대한다.

우리나라 노인주간보호시설의 실내공간 특성과 계획안 (Characteristics of Interior Space and Planning for Elderly Day Care Center in Korea)

  • Day care center for the elderly is an alternative for community care for frail elderly who need social participation and physical cares and services outside the family. The purpose of this study was to identify the present situation of day care center for the elderly and to suggest desirable interior space plans for elderly day care center. Data were collected by two ways; a mail survey and case studies of existing day care centers. Five cases of day care centers were analyzed to find out Physical and space problems, available programs and services. Also, the staffs in 96 day care centers for the elderly in nationwide were selected for a mail survey and 68.8 percentage of all was collected and analyzed. From the result of case studies, narrow space and lack of accessibility features for wheelchair or other prosthetic devices were the major problems. From the result of a mail survey analysis, the elderly users were over 73 years old, and high proportion had suffered from dementia and apoplexy Also, staffing ration was 1:7 In other words, one staff was caring of 7 old people, and supporting staff was insufficient. Therefore, supportive, therapeutic environment Was more important issue to improve quality of care. Separate program room and outdoor space, lounging space, treatment room by gardening, separate counselling room, bedroom, a simple kitchen unit, staff office, separate physical treatment room, resting room for staff was indicated more necessarily. When priority of planning interior space was safety followed by accessability and convenience, it was also reported that sire of each room was generally narrow. The most serious problem in interior space was the lack and narrowness of space, and accessible features for mobility. Based on the literature review and the findings of this study, two types of floor plans for elderly day care center were suggested;‘a mixed type for the elderly with and without dementia’and‘a separate type for the elderly with dementia.’The main goals for designing interior space for two types of elderly day care center were to provide safe environment, encouraging environment for remaining abilities of users, sanitary environment, therapeutic environment, familiar environment, and socially-encouraging environment. The recommendations for further studies were suggested.

일반인의 심폐소생술 교육 희망에 대한 영향 요인 분석 (Which Laypersons Want Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Education?)

  • Purpose: Few data exist regarding the cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) education in relationship to characteristics of socio-economic status and health-medical conditions in Korea. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the characteristics of which laypersons want the CPR education. Methods: Based on a health survey of Incheon Metropolitan City adults(n=5,114), tests of the differences between the group that wants the CPR (n=1318) and the group that doesn't (n=3576), and a logistic regression analysis of two groups was performed on socio-economic status-gender, age, marital stats, education level, numbers of family members, and monthly household income-and health-medical conditions-diseases, accident experience, EMS(emergency medical system) experience, and health status. Results: Even the participation rate of the CPR education in Korea is only 4.3%, which is extremely lower than other developed countries, there are statistically significant differences between the group that wants the CPR and the group that doesn't on gender(p=0.005), age(p=0.000), education level(p=0.000), numbers of family members(p=0.000), monthly income(p=0.000). diseases(p=0.000). health status(p=0.042). Furthermore, age(OR: 1.025, p=0.000), education level(OR : 0.721, p=0.000), numbers of family members(OR: 0.809, p=0.000), and health status(OR: 1.077, p=0.000) are statistically significant factors on the wish for the CPR education. Conclusion: Accident and EMS experiences are not so much influential factors on that laypersons want the CPR education in Korea. Therefore, certain subgroups of laypersons such as high-risk patients and family members need targeted outreach programs in CPR education.

인간수행공학을 적용한 도서관활용수업의 저해요인 분석 연구 (Analysis on Library-Aided Instruction's Obstacle Factors based on Human Performance Technology Model)

  • 본 연구는 초 중등학교 교육현장에서 실시되고 있는 도서관활용수업이 어떠한 저해요인에 의해 활성화되지 않는지 원인을 분석하여 해소방안을 제시하기 위한 연구로 첫째, 도서관활용수업방법의 실증적 개선을 위한 평가 분석의 모형을 인간수행공학모형을 기반으로 재구성하였으며 둘째, 도서관활용수업에 관한 기존 연구의 이론적 토대를 기초로 실태를 파악하고 도서관활용수업의 바람직한 수행목표를 도출하였으며 셋째, 실제 연구대상학교를 중심으로 재구성된 인간수행 공학모형을 적용하여 도서관활용수업을 저해하는 요인을 도출하고 분석기법에 따라 수행요인을 분류하여 저해요인의 해소방안을 제시하였다. 연구의 결과 제시된 도서관활용수업 저해요인의 해소방안으로는 도서관활용수업에 대한 명확한 기대치 제공과 학습목표의 정확한 기술, 도서관활용수업 지원체제 구축, 교사들의 외적 동기 유발 시스템 개발, 다양한 도서관활용수업 프로그램 개발, 그리고 학교장과 일선 교사들의 도서관활용수업에 대한 인식전환 등으로 요약할 수 있으며 학교도서관매체센터가 도서관활용수업의 활성화로 인해 학교교육의 핵심적 역할을 수행할 수 있기를 기대한다.

개별접촉 교육이 고혈압 환자의 지식$\cdot$태도와 자기건강관리 이행 및 혈압 변화에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Individual Education for Hypertensives at Home on Knowledge of Hypertension, Attitude about Chronic Disease, Self-care Management And Blood Pressue.)

  • This is the quasi experimental study to evaluate the effect of individual health education for hypertensive patients at home on knowledge of hypertesnion, attitude about chronic disease, self-care management. The individual health education program was performed at each patient's home every one month through, 1 years. The first data collection was carried out in May 1991. and the last was done in July 1992 through questionaires. The study results were as follows; 1) The subjects were 22 hypertensive patients who agreed the participation of study among registered patients at a public health center in Incheon. They were consisted of thirteen males and nine females. And their duration of illness were average 5 years, their mean age were 65 years. The over all living conditions were poor and the average monthly income was 50 thousdand won. 2) The effect of individual health education through home visit was statistically significant. The Knowledge of hypertension (t= -4.40, p<.001), attitude about chronic disease (t=­2.65, p<.05), self-care management of the subjects were significantly improved. (t=-3.76, p<.001), and their blood pressure were decreased. 3) Between the knowledge of hypertesnion and the attitude about chronic disease showed significant positive relationship. But the self-care management had not relationship with these two factors. unexpectedly. 4) The knowledge of hypertension, attitude about chronic disease, and self-care management had not evenly influenced the control of hypertension. These results suggested that the effort needed to find out the other factors influencing self-care management and develop the self-care management measuring tool. And the health education programs for chronic patients were developed, systematically. And the standardized health education model was developed for home health care nursing intervention in community based.

농민조직의 리더십 유형과 개발에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Leadership Style and Development of Agricultural Organization in Korea)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the leadership style and development of agricultural organization in Korea. Specific objectives of the study were to : 1) identify the leadership style of agricultural organization though literature review, 2) survey the members' opinions about their leadership style, 3) examine the leader's self-estimation of their leadership style, 4) identify the desirable leadership style items of the leaders and members, 5) suggest effective way to the development of leadership style. The study was carried out through literature review and questionnaire survey. Total of 715 farmers were surveyed to collect data, and 501 responded. The statistical techniques applied on the data are frequency, percentile, analysis of variance, multiple regression utilizing the SPSS/WIN, and the statistical significance was tested at .05 level. The major findings of the study were: 1) the leaders motivation and problem solving abilities of agricultural organizations were not enough to satisfy the members, 2) members believed the leaders make somewhat arbitrary decisions, 3) the leaders of the organizations had difficulties to coordinate the different opinions of the members, and 4) the leaders of the organizations felt the need of skills and information on leadership style and development of agricultural organization. For improvement of leadership for agricultural organization, this study suggests; 1) the more education programs should be made and practiced to make their leadership special, 2) all members should make much efforts to have channels for rational communication, 3) the leaders have to give members well-polished incentives for active participation, 4) more governmental support should be given to empower those organizations, and 5) the agricultural organizations, universities and government must establish a strong coordinating system to realize above suggestions.

우간다 농촌지도사업의 현재와 미래 (Present and Future of Agricultural Extension System in Uganda)

  • 이 연구는 우간다 농촌지도사업의 발전과정을 조망하고 발전방안을 제시하는 것이다. 우간다에서 농촌지도사업에 대한 많은 접근방법이 사용되었지만, 농업생산성이나 수익성 향상에 도움이 되었다는 선행연구 결과는 없는 실정이다. 그 동안 너무 많은 농촌지도사업에 대한 개혁사업이 이루어졌지만, 부분적으로 상향식 접근방법도 있었지만, 대부분의 접근방법은 하향식 접근방법이었다. 많은 사례에서 농촌지도사업에 대한 이러한 개혁은 농업생산이나 수익성에 영향을 줄 정도로 발전될 수 있는 기회가 주어지지 않았다. 향후 성공적인 농촌지도사업과 농촌개발이 이루어지기 위해서는 기술적인 전문가와 자원의 유용성 증가 뿐만 아니라, 농촌지도사업과 농촌개발 프로그램을 기획하고 수행할 때의 농촌지도사업의 제도적인 역할정립에 대한 정부의 의지와 지역주민의 적극적인 참여가 이루어지도록 해야 할 것이다. 그리고 우간다에서 공공 농촌지도사업은 수요자에 필요한 적절한 지도사업이 이루어지도록 수요자중심의 농촌지도사업이 이루어지도록 해야 할 것이다.
