Characterization and Electrochemical Performance of Composite BSCF Cathode for Intermediate-temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

  • The composite barium strontium cobalt ferrite (BSCF) cathodes were investigated in the intermediate temperature range of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The characteristics and electrochemical performances of composited BSCF/samarium doped ceria (SDC); BSCF/gadolinium doped ceria (GDC); and BSCF/SDC/GDC were compared to single BSCF cathode. The BSCF used in this study were synthesized using glycine nitrate process and mechanically mixing was used to fabricate a composite cathode. Using a composite form, the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) could be reduced and BSCF/SDC/GDC exhibited the lowest TEC value at $18.95{\times}10^{-6}K^{-1}$. The electrochemical performance from half cells and single cells exhibited nearly the same trend. All the composite cathodes gave higher electrochemical performance than the single BSCF cathode (0.22 $Wcm^{-2}$); however, when two kinds of electrolyte were used (BSCF/SDC/GDC, 0.36$Wcm^{-2}$), the electrochemical performance was lower than when the BSCF/SDC (0.45 $Wcm^{-2}$) or BSCF/GDC (0.45 $Wcm^{-2}$) was applied as cathode ($650^{\circ}C$, 97%$H_2$/3%$H_2O$ to the anode and ambient air to the cathode).

Hydrogen isotope exchange behavior of protonated lithium metal compounds

  • The exchange behaviors of hydrogen isotopes between protonated lithium metal compounds and deuterated water or tritiated water were investigated. The various protonated lithium metal compounds were prepared by acid treatment of lithium metal compounds with different crystal structures and metal compositions. The protonated lithium metal compounds could more effectively reduce the deuterium concentration in water compared with the corresponding pristine lithium metal compounds. The H+ in the protonated lithium metal compounds was speculated to be more readily exchangeable with hydrons in the aqueous solution compared with Li+ in the pristine lithium metal compounds, and the exchanged heavier isotopes were speculated to be more stably retained in the crystal structure compared with the light protons. When the tritiated water (157.7 kBq/kg) was reacted with the protonated lithium metal compounds, the protonated lithium manganese nickel cobalt oxide was found to adsorb and retain twice as much tritium (163.9 Bq/g) as the protonated lithium manganese oxide (69.9 Bq/g) and the protonated lithium cobalt oxide (75.1 Bq/g) in the equilibrium state.

분무열분해 공정에 의한 코발트 산화물 나노 분체 제조에 미치는 노즐 팁 크기의 영향 (Effect of Nozzle Tip Size on the Preparation of Nano-Sized Cobalt Oxide Powder by Spray Pyrolysis Process)

  • 본 연구에서는 코발트 염화물($CoCl_2$) 용액을 원료로 하여 분무열분해 반응에 의하여 평균입도 50 nm 이하의 코발트 산화물($Co_3O_4$) 분말을 제조하였으며 원료용액이 분사되는 노즐 팁의 크기 변화에 따른 입자들의 특성 변화를 파악하였다. 노즐 팁의 크기가 1 mm인 경우에는 형성된 대부분의 액적형태는 구형을 이루고 있으며 표면은 매우 치밀한 조직을 나타내고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 최종 형성된 입자들의 평균입도는 20 ~ 30 nm이었다. 노즐 팁의 크기가 2 mm인 경우에는 형성된 액적형태는 일부는 구형을 이루고 있었지만 상당 부분은 심하게 분열된 형태를 나타내고 있었다. 노즐 팁 크기가 5 mm인 경우에는 구형을 이루는 액적형태는 거의 존재하지 않았으며 거의 대부분 심하게 분열된 상태를 나타내고 있었다. 액적형태의 표면조직은 다른 노즐 팁 경우에 비하여 치밀함이 크게 감소하였다. 형성된 입자들의 평균입도는 약 25 nm이었다. 노즐 팁 크기가 1 mm로부터 2 mm 및 3 mm로 증가함에 따라 XRD 피크들의 강도는 거의 변화가 없는 반면 노즐 팁 크기가 5 mm로 증가되는 경우에는 피크의 강도가 현저히 감소하게 되었다. 노즐 팁 크기가 1 mm로부터 2 mm 로 증가함에 따라 입자들의 비표면적은 감소하였으며 5 mm로 증가되는 경우에는 비표면적이 현저히 증가하였다.

Low Temperature Plasma-Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition Cobalt

  • Cobalt thin film was fabricated by a novel NH3-based plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition(PE-ALD) using Co(CpAMD) precursor and $NH_3$ plasma. The PE-ALD Co thin films were produced well on both thermally grown oxide (100 nm) $SiO_2$ and Si(001) substrates. Chemical bonding states and compositions of PE-ALD Co films were analyzed by XPS and discussed in terms of resistivity and impurity level. Especially, we successfully developed PE-ALD Code position at very low growth temperature condition as low as $T_s=100^{\circ}C$, which enabled the fabrication of Co patterns through lift-off method after the deposition on PR patterned substrate without any thermal degradation.

  • Dry sliding wear behavior of electro-pressure sintered Co-Fe, Co-Ni and Co-Fe-Ni compacts was investigated. Pin-on-disk wear tests were performed on the sintered compacts disk specimens against alumina $(Al_2O_3)$ and silica $(SiO_2)$ ball counterparts at various loads ranging from 3N to 12N. Two sliding speeds of 0.1m/sec and 0.2m/sec and a fixed sliding distance of 1,000m were employed. Worn surfaces and cross sections of them were examined by a scanning electron microscopy, and wear mechanism of the compacts was investigated. Effects of the oxide layer that was formed on wearing surface of the compacts on the wear were also studied.

  • Ligand variation was carried out on a cobalt(III) complex of Salen-type ligand comprised of 1,2-cyclohexenediamine and salicylaldehyde bearing a methyl substituent on 3-position and -[$CMe(CH_2CH_2CH_2N^+Bu_3)_2$] on 5-position, which is a highly active catalyst for $CO_2$/propylene oxide copolymerization. Replacement of the methyl substituent with bulky isopropyl group resulted in alteration of the binding mode, consequently lowering turnover frequency significantly. Replacement with an ethyl group preserved binding mode and activity. Replacement of the tributylammonium unit with trihexylammonium or trioctylammonium, or replacement of 1,2-cyclohexenediamino unit with -$NC(Me)_2CH_2N$- decreased activity, even though the binding mode was unaltered.

Photoacoustic Spectroscopic Study on Cobalt Incorporation onto the Surface of Mesoporous Molecular Sieves

  • The incorporation of cobalt into mesoporous molecular sieves MCM-41 and MCM-48 was carried out. Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 were prepared using Co(II) acetate solution adjusted to pH = 3.0 with phosphoric acid by the incipient wetness method. Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) was used to study the local environments of Co(II) incorporated into mesopores. The band around 500 nm in PAS of as-prepared Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 with Co(II) acetate solution was changed to triplet bands around 600 nm. This could be assigned to the 4 A2(F)-> 4T1(P) transition of Co(II) surrounded tetrahedrally by oxygen ions after calcination. It may be attributable to that the octahedral cobalt species containing phosphate ligands in coordination sphere reacting with framework's silanol groups to be dispersed atomically onto the surface of mesoporous molecular sieves as a tetrahedral species. This is unlike that the Co in Co-Cl/MCM41 and direct-synthesized Co-MCM41 transforms to Co oxide phase upon calcination. Co-PO/MCM41 and Co-PO/MCM48 were stable while treated with water.

  • Anion exchange membrane electrolysis is considered a promising next-generation hydrogen production technology that can produce low-cost, clean hydrogen. However, anion exchange membrane electrolysis technology is in its early stages of development and requires intensive research on electrodes, which are a key component of the catalyst-system interface. In this study, we optimized the pressure conditions of the hot-pressing process to manufacture cobalt oxide electrodes for the development of a high uniformity and high adhesion electrode production process for the oxygen evolution reaction. As the pressure increased, the reduction of pores within the electrode and increased densification of catalytic particles led to the formation of a uniform electrode surface. The cobalt oxide electrode optimized for pressure conditions exhibited improved catalytic activity and durability. The optimized electrode was used as the anode in an AEMWE single cell, exhibiting a current density of 1.53 A cm-2 at a cell voltage of 1.85 V. In a durability test conducted for 100 h at a constant current density of 500 mA cm-2, it demonstrated excellent durability with a low degradation rate of 15.9 mV kh-1, maintaining 99% of its initial performance.

Borate 완충용액에서 코발트 산화피막의 생성 과정과 전기적 성질 (Growth Kinetics and Electronic Properties of Passive Film of Cobalt in Borate Buffer Solution)

  • Borate 완충용액에서 Co의 부동화 피막의 생성과정(growth kinetics)과 부동화 피막의 전기적 성질을 변전위법, 대 시간 전류법 그리고 단일 주파수 전기화학적 임피던스 측정법으로 조사하였다. 불안정 부동화가 일어나는 낮은 전극전위에서 생성되는 Co의 부동화 피막 $Co(OH)_2$와 CoO로 구성되었으며, 전극전위가 증가하면 산화피막의 조성이 $Co_3O_4$, CoOOH로 변화되었다. 또한 산화피막의 조성은 전극전위와 산화시간에 따라 변하였다. 이 때 생성되는 산화피막은 Mott-Schottky 식이 적용되는 p-형 반도체 성질을 보였다.

VOID DEFECTS IN COBALT-DISILICIDE FOR LOGIC DEVICES

  • We employed cobalt-disilicide for high-speed logic devices. We prepared stable and low resistant $CoSi_2$ through typical fabrication process including wet cleaning and rapid thermal process (RTP). We sputtered 15nm thick cobalt on the wafer and performed RTP annealing 2 times to obtain 60nm thick $CoSi_2$. We observed spherical shape voids with diameter of 40nm in the surface and inside $CoSi_2$ layers. The voids resulted in taking over abnormal junction leakage current and contact resistance values. We report that the voids in $CoSi_2$ layers are resulted from surface pits during the ion implantation previous to deposit cobalt layer. Silicide reaction rate around pits was enhanced due to Gibbs-Thompson effects and the volume expansion of the silicidation of the flat active regime trapped dimples. We confirmed that keeping the buffer oxide layer during ion implantation and annealing the silicon surface after ion implantation were required to prevent void defects in CoSi$_2$ layers.
