In this paper, for the highly plastic marine soft clay distributed in west and southern coast of Korean peninsula of Kwangyang and Busan New Port areas, correlation between compression index and other indices representing geotechnical engineering properties such as liquid limit, void ratio and natural water content were analyzed. Appropriate empirical equations of being able to estimate the compressibility of clays in the specific areas were proposed and compared with other existing empirical ones. For analyses of the data and test results, data for marine clays were used from areas of the South Container Port of the Busan New Port, East Breakwater, Passenger Quay, Jungma Reclamation and Reclamation Containment in the 3rd stage in Kwangyang. In order to find the best regression model by using the commercially available software, MS EXCEL 2000, results obtained from the simple linear regression analysis, using the values of liquid limit, initial void ratio and natural water content as independent variables, were compared with the existing empirical equations. Multiple linear regression was also performed to find the best fit regression curves for compression index and other soil properties by combining those independent variables. On the other hands, another software of SPSS for non-linear regression was used to analyze the correlations between compression index and other soil properties.

This study selected the promising area of submarine groundwater discharge(SGD) that flows into the sea following unconfined physical aquifer through the electrical resistivity survey of the land and sea. The submarine groundwater discharge(SGD) mostly flows into the sea following fracture zones, and the detection of the fault zone becomes the important guideline of groundwater discharge. Electrical sounding of the land assessed the groundwater flow and integration possibility according to the location of a fault that is a water path between underground reservoir and surface water as well as a rock fracture. In addition, the study conducted sea electrical resistivity to expand the area with high potential and selected the expected water potential groundwater area. The areas of the study were Busan and coastal areas, and for the terrain analysis, the candidates of the ground exploration were selected after analyzing lineaments that is expanded to coast direction.
Marine terraces, a step-like landform, are important geologic markers that provide tectonic information during the Quaternary Period. Marine terraces are well developed along all coastlines(East, West, and South) of the Korean Peninsula, those along the East coastline are the most distinctive. The marine terraces of the East coastline are classified into 4-6 flights that are several meters or several tens of meters above the present sea level. It is believed that these terraces, except for the lowest one, were formed in the middle Pleistocene. In the base of the OSL age dating results and Blake excursion events of magnetostratigraphy, the $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ terraces are correlated to the last interglacial stage. Considering the marine terraces linked to a sea-level curve of the Pleistocene, it is thought that regional tectonic movements have uplifted the East coastal area since the middle Pleistocene. Besides, former shorelines of each terrace have varied elevations from Gangreung to Busan bay, which can be divided into four regions, namely, Gangreung-Yonghanri(I), Homikot-Najung(II), Najung-Bangeojin(III), and Waesung-Busan Bay(IV). The former shorelines of each terrace at both Gangreung-Yonghanri(I) and Najung-Bangeojin(III) are higher than those in the other two regions, due to block movements by regional faults such as the Ocheon Fault or its subsidiaries, the Gampo Lineament and Ulsan Fault. Uplift rate of the East coast ranges from 0.2 m/ky to 0.3 m/ky, but each region shows different uplift rate.

In-situ observational works had been done for the investigation of Cochlodinium polykrikoides cell distributions and abundances off the coast of Busan, Jinhae Bay, and Namhae to Tongyong area in the early June, 2004. The surface water of 11 was concentrated by passing through ${\Phi}$ 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$ mesh and cellular morphological characteristics of the species in the sample was observed under light microscope equipped with digital camera on the vessel. C. polykrikoides cells showed highest cell numbers ranging from 60 to 660 cells/1 at Jinhae Bay. Cell counts at offshore area of Busan ranged from 45 to 330 cells/1. However, no cell was found in the water between Namhae and Tongyong. C. polykrikoides found during the cruise had a large bright red and round cellular materials in one cell and two-celled chain of C. polykrikoides. The red material decreased as C. polykrikoides formed long chains through cell divisions.
In this study, we tried to identify a sea anemone collected from the coast of Gijang, Busan. The anemone was morphologically similar to species belonging to the genus Anthopleura, but its morphological characteristics did not allow for confirmed identification to species level. Multiple genes from mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase III, 12S and 16S rRNA, and nuclear 18S and 28S rRNA, were amplified for multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis using genomic DNA extracted from the sampled anemone and a different primer set. Based on the MLST analysis, the anemone obtained in this study was identified as Anthopleura artemisia. Also, the sequence of internal transcribed spacer-2 was most closely related to A. artemisia, indicating that this single region might be useful for anemone identification. This study shows significance of molecular identification for sea anemones, and will be helpful in studies of sea anemone identification using genotyping-by-sequencing.
Recently, the intensity and frequency of typhoons have been on the increase due to unusual weather phenomena and climate change. In particular, on September 13, 2003, typhoon MAEMI (0314) caused heavy damage in the provinces of Busan and Gyongnam, but also provided an opportunity to perform a variety of studies on storm surge. According to investigation reports on the damage resulting from typhoon MAEMI, the areas where coastal inundation occurred were located in reclaimed land under coastal development. In this study, through an image data analysis of historic and present day typhoons affecting Masan, we found that the inundation damage areas corresponded to reclaimed lands. Therefore, using the area around Busan, including the southeastern coast of Korea where typhoons lead to an increased storm surge risk, we performed a storm surge/inundation simulation, and examined the inundation effect on reclaimed land due to the intensified typhoons predicted for the future by climate change scenarios.
It is important to understand the current status and problems of the North Korean shipping industry to prepare for inter-Korean trade in the future era of peace in the Korean Peninsula. In this study, the status of vessels calling in North and South ports was analyzed by year, cargo type (vessel type), and North Korean port type using Port-MIS data. In particular, considering the three years (2006-2008) in which inter-Korean trade was the most active, the flow of maritime transport was analyzed by visualizing data on vessels' arrival and departure in the North and South ports. Findings revealed that sea transportation between Haeju-Incheon was the most frequent, while the Haeju-Mokpo and Nampo-Incheon routes in the west coast area, and the Najin-Busan route in the east coast area were active. With reference to general cargo vessels, ports located on the west coast of Korea tended to operate between those located on the North coast of North Korea and on the east coast of South Korea. These results are expected to serve as a basis for establishing research and policies related to coastal shipping between the two Koreas in the future.
Distribution of drifting larvae of Anadara broughtnoii SCHRENCK was studied based on the planktonic sampling which has been collected in fifteen sampling areas of southern coast of Korea and Ulsan Bay during summer season from 1973 to 1977. Vertical and horizontal occurrence was analyzed related to the environmental factors such as surface water temperature, current velocity and depth of water column. High density of the larvae was observed in the Chinhae Bay which included the sampling areas Rampo, Sockcheon, Majeon, Changpo, Dangdong, Bedun, Changchoa, and Wonmun. Maximum occurrence of the farvae was accompanied with the highest water temperature of the summer season, and it was usually August when the water temperature was over 27$^{\circ}C$. In August, 1975, the highest density of the farvae was observed, when the mean surface water temperature was the highest compared to those of other years. The first appearence of the drifting larvae was also related to the surface water temperature. Each year the larae begin to appear from the late July and the ready-to-fall larvae appear in abundance from the mid-August. Vertical distribution patterns of the larvae are closely related to the depth of the water column as well as to the current velocity. In shallow water the larvae tend to aggregate in the bottom layer, while they are diffused to some extent in deep water. In shallow water column ( 8m) more or less 75% of the total larvae individuals was observed in the lower 4m layer and in deep water column ( 16m) only 45% of those was found in the lower 4m layer. In the water of lower velocity a large fraction of the larvae population is distributed in the lower depth layer.
Larval morphogenesis and infection rates of Cercaria pectinata Huet were investigated in regards to histological changes and mortality of the hard clam, Meretrix lusoria $(R\ddot{o}ding)$, in Buan located on the Western Coast of Korea. The trichocerous cercariae, Cercaria pectinata, and its sporocysts parasitize mainly in the tissues of goand, digestive gland and gills of the hard clams. One branched sporocyst grows into a great number of cylindrical sporocysts, and a heavily infected clam possesses 2,000 to 5,000 cylindrical spo ro cysts. Each of them produces approximately 30 to 70 germinal cells and cercariae. Of 2,639 clams examined 347 individuals $(13.2\%)$ were found to be infected. The infection rates showed seasonal variations, the rate being highest $(29.6\%)$ in July, and lowest $(2.0\%)$ in March. Whereas, the infection rates did not change significantly with the changes of size class of the shell. No infection was observed in Meretrix petachialis (Lamarck) collected from Myeong-ji, Kimhae Gun located near Busan. In the iefected clams, the gametogenesis (oogenesis and apermatogenesis) did not undergo completely, therefore the heavily infected clam seemed to be castrated. Also the tissues of the digestive gland and gills were compressed by the multiplication of the parasites. When they were kept in aquariums in the laboratory, high mortality has occurred in the infected clams. All of the 60 infected clams died within 35 days.

To describe dinoflagellate cyst distribution from Busan Harbor, eleven surface sediment samples and a vertical sediment sample were collected in 2003. Dinoflagellate cysts were identified 12 genera 22 species, and the total cyst concentrations varied from $210\~869\;cysts/g$. The proportion of heterotrophic dinoflagellate cysts was higher in inner parts than in outer parts of the harbor, which reflects that water quality is worse in inner harborthan that in outer harbor. On the basis of the sedimentation rate of 2.0 mm/yr, total depth of the vertical core reflects marine environment far the past 260 years, where dinoflagellate cysts were identified 9 genera 18 species and the total cyst concentrations were $79\~446\;cysts/g$. The cyst concentrations were low and the proportion of heterotrophic dinoflagellate cysts were incerased in the upper part from $14\~15cm$ depth$(1928\~1933)$, which shows industrialization and urbanization in this study area.
