  • Iksan(翼算) written by Lee Sang Hyuk(李相赫, 1810∼\ulcorner) is unique among mathematical books published in Chosun Dynasty since it is the only book which accomplishes the conceptualization of theory of equations if not that of mathematics itself. We investigate its process by his other publications and mathematical interaction with Nam Byung Gil(南秉吉, 1820∼1869).

Analysis on Gu-il-jip, the mathematical book of Chosun dynasty and its pedagogical applications (조선시대의 산학서 <구일집>의 내용 분석 및 교육적 활용 방안 탐구)

  • Gu-il-jip is a mathematical book of Chosun dynasty in the 18c. It consists of nine chapters including more than 473 problems and their solutions. Analyzing the problems and their solutions, we can appreciate the mathematical researches by the professional mathematicians of Chosun. Especially, it is worth noting the followings: - units for measuring and decimal notations - $\pi$, area of circle, volume of sphere - naming the powers - counting rods - excess and deficit: calculation technique for excess-deficit relations among quantities - rectangular arrays: calculation technique for simultaneous linear equations - 'Thien Yuan' notation: method for representing equations - 'Khai Fang': algorithm for numerical solution of quadratic, cubic and higher equations Based on these analyses, some pedagogical applications are proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine obstacles to progress for 20th century Korean mathematics. In 1945, shortly after Korea was liberated from Japan, there were no Korean mathematics Ph.D. holders, less than ten bachelor degree holders, and only one person with a master's degree in mathematics. We investigate the reasons for this. Korea has to overcome such an unforgiving condition and rebuild quality education programs in higher mathematics over the last several decades. These debilitating circumstances in higher mathematics were considerable obstacles in developing a higher level of mathematical research for the mainstream of 20th century world mathematics. We study policy and curriculums of Korean school mathematics in the late 19th and early 20th century, with some educational and socio-political background.

Approximate Approaches in Chinese and Chosun Mathematics (중국 및 조선 수학에서의 근사적 접근)

  • Approximation is a very useful approach in mathematics research. It was the same in traditional Chinese and Chosun mathematics. This study derived five characteristics from approximation approaches which were found in Chinese and Chosun mathematical books: improvement of approximate values, common and inevitable use of approximate values, recognition of approximate values and their reasons, comparison of their exactness, application of approximate principles. Through these characteristics, we can infer what Chinese and Chosun mathematicians recognized approximate values and how they manipulated them. They took approximate approaches by necessity or for the sake of convenience in mathematical study and its applications. Also, they tried to improve the degree of exactness of approximate values and use the inverse calculations to check them.

History of Indeterminate Equations (불정방정식의 역사)

  • Although indeterminate equations were dealt in Jiu zhang suan shu and then in Sun zi suan fing and Zhang Giu Jian suan Jing in China, they did not get any substantial development until Qin Jiu Shao introduced da yan shu in his great book Shu shu jiu zhang which solves goneral systems of linear congruences. We first investigate his da yan shu and then study the history of indeterminate equations in Chosun Dynasty. Further, we compare Qin's da yan shu with that in San Hak Jung Eui written by Chosun mathematician Nam Byung Gil.

Right Triangles in Traditional Mathematics of China and Korea (산학서의 직각 삼각형)

  • We briefly survey the history of Chinese mathematics which concerns the resolution of right triangles. And we analyse the problems Yucigugosulyodohae(劉氏勾股述要圖解) which is the mathematical book of Chosun Dynasty and contains the 224 problems about right triangles only. Among them, 210 problems are for resolution of right triangles. We also present the methods for generating the Pythagorean triples and constructing polynomial equations in Yucigugosulyodohae which are needed for resolving right triangles.

  • Under 2009 Revised Mathematics Curriculum and 2015 Revised Mathematics Curriculum, mathematics teachers can help students inductively express real life problems related to sequences but have difficulties in dealing with problems asking the general terms of the sequences defined inductively due to 'Guidelines for Teaching and Learning'. Because most of textbooks mainly deal with the simple calculation for the sums of sequences, students tend to follow them rather than developing their inductive and deductive reasoning through finding patterns in the sequences. In this study, we reconstruct 8 problems to find the sums of sequences in MukSaJipSanBup which is known as one of the oldest mathematics book of Chosun Dynasty, using the terminology and symbols of the current curriculum. Such kind of problems can be given in textbooks and used for teaching and learning. Using problems in mathematical books of Chosun Dynasty with suitable modifications for teaching and learning is a good method which not only help students feel the usefulness of mathematics but also learn the cultural value of our traditional mathematics and have the pride for it.

  • This paper aims to investigate how Chinese and Korean evaluate $\pi$ and measure tile area of circle by reviewing the problems in the old mathematical books. The books are Gu-Jang-San-Sul(The nine chapters on tile mathematical art) for China and Gu-Il-Jib for Chosun Dynasty. The result shows that our ancestors used the different values of ${\pi}$ in relation to the accuracy and the various methods for measuring the area of circle.

  • This article explores what is the genuine Koreanness in Korean arithmetic by examining what kind of influence the Chinese arithmetic had on the Korean arithmetic and how the Korean arithmetic scholars had accepted and utilized it. Because the main stream of Korean culture before the end of Chosun dynasty was located under the umbrella of the Chinese philosophy, technique, and culture, it is necessary to make researches on the historical documents and materials in order to establish the milestone in the Korean arithmetic history for the Korean arithmetic scholars. For this research, the arithmetic books published in between the sixteenth century and the end of Chosun dynasty are mainly consulted and discussed, dealing with the bibliographical introduction in the arithmetic Part in Re Outline History of the Korean Science & Technology written by Prof. Yong-Woon Kim.

Study on the Volume of a Sphere in the Historical Perspective and its Didactical Implications (구의 부피에 대한 수학사적 고찰 및 교수학적 함의)

  • This study aims to investigate the evolution of calculating the volume of a sphere in eastern and western mathematical history. In western case, Archimedes', Cavalieri's and Kepler's approaches, and in eastern case, Nine Chapters';, Liu Hui's and Zus' approaches are worthy of noting. The common idea of most of these approaches is the infinitesimal concept corresponding to Cavalieri's or Liu-Zu's principle which would developed to the basic idea of Calculus. So this study proposes an alternative to organization of math-textbooks or instructional procedures for teaching the volume of a sphere based on the principle.
