  • The underground transmission lines which have been built to expand the suppling facilities will be continuously accompanying with high growth of the increase of power demand in the metropolitan area in recent years. So, it is necessary to maximize the ability and reliability of power supply with the current-carrying capability of the underground transmission lines. Design criteria of KEPCO is to be presented and used frequently. But it has to be studied about the installation methods of power cable buried in ground. In this study, we used the program for calculating the current-carrying capability of underground transmission power cables. We estimated the maximum permissible current values by the horizontal arrangement in the installation methods of power cable(154kV XLPE $600mm^2$) buried ducts in ground. To see the general tendency of the analysis, we researched a statistical analysis with such parameters as the maximum permissible current values. Through the regression analysis, we analyze the most highly values of the maximum permissible current on the Ra type duct arrangement.

  • There exists a interface among the different kinds of materials in the solid insulating ones, which effects on the insulating capability heavily. The insulating construction has been developed for each usages and take themselves into several sorts. The conjunction between CV cables have the electrical weakness of solidity and solid interface, so they were focused at the long distance-line. To this background, it is very important to get the information on the interface influencing on the insulating capability of cable and to observe its procedure. In this paper, the interface was made artificially to research the effect owing to the toughness of interface, which results in the aging and treeing proceeding was observed. The polyethylen, as is generally using for the cable, was taken in this research.

  • In order to meet recent increasing demand for electric power in large cities, plans are being made to introduce 345kV lines into large urban areas. Up to now, OF cables have been used for 345kV fines, but nowadays XLPE insulated cables are preferred as they are easier to maintain due to phenomenal advances in plastic insulation technology, therefore cable manufacturing companies are trying to improve the performance and reliability of UHV CV cables and their accessories. For the purpose, our company has developed facilities for testing UHV cables. In this paper, we describes the methodology adopted for the design and development of a test termination, conducted the electrical test of UHV cables. Based on detailed analytical studies for electrical field distribution, the internal electrical design for the testing end has been carried out.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated a partial discharge (PD) detector to diagnose the soundness of CNCV cables by analyzing PD pulses and to predict discharge locations. The PD detector is consisted of a coupling network with a discharge free capacitor and a detection impedance, a voltage follower and a low noise amplifier. Lower cut-off frequency of the detector is adjusted at 175kHz to block AC voltage and to pass discharge pulse only. The discharge location could be obtained by the time of arrival method using travelling wave propagation theory. In a laboratory test on an eighty meter CV cable, we could position the discharge location within a two meter error.

  • In this paper, each specimen blended at weight proportions of 80% HDPE to 20% EVA, 70% HDPE to 30% EVA, 60% HDPE to 40% EVA, and 50% HDPE to 50% EVA was manufactued respectively. FE-SEM, DSC and XRD analysis were carried out as the means of structural and chemical analysis. From the results of DSC and XRD analysis, the lower contents in blended specimens were, the higher melting temperature and crystallinity of main crystal were. It seems that the phenomena was attributes to themoplastic interpenetrating network effect(TPIPN) in which EVA having low melting point penetrated into HDPE. Also, from the decreasing tendeancy of melting point as a function of blend ration, it was confirmd that above resins have compatibility. The thermal and mechanical performance of proposed insulator were compared with conventional XLPE, main insulating material of CV cable. Also, validity was proved by superior and inferior factor respectively.

  • The demand for electric power is increasing every year. All facilities operating at power stations and all facilities used in transmitting high volumes of electric power are therefore expected to operate with a high degree of reliability. 6.6 kV XLPE 100 SQ 1C cables are used to deliver high levels of generated electric power. Depending on the method of manufacture, installation environment, and usage conditions, the deterioration processes of power cables start from the instant of operation. Cable junctions may break down in three years from the start of operation due to manufacturing or construction defects. We have invented the first device in Korea to monitor the status of live cables and installed these at Korea Western Power Co., Ltd.. We have set the criteria to determine deterioration status and specified the degree of deterioration at which one should replace the cables. In this paper, we present the effect of insulation layer and sheath on the insulation resistance status in cables.

  • The high-power 6.6 kV XLPE (or CV) cables at Korean electric power stations have been in operation for the last 40 years. Most of the XLPE cables starts deteriorating in 6-8 years from the operating instant of time, some cables may be breakdown at any moment even though they were installed in recent years, causing, huge socioeconomic losses. In order to prevent unexpected cable accident, the operating status of power cables should be monitored in regularly, timely bases. We have invented a device in order to systematically monitor and prevent an abrupt accidents of high-power cables in operation at power station. It has been installed at Korean Western Power Co. Ltd. at Taean, and operating normally for the last 4 years. In this paper, we introduce the functions and operating principles of the measuring device, and present the relationship between humidity and insulation status of XLPE cables for the load of electric turbine generator.

The insulation performances of the proposed insulator were compared with conventional XLPE, main insulating material of CV cable on the basis of the investigation results of DC insulation performances. From the space charge density, electric field and potential profiles with raising DC voltage and time variation in HE82, distortion of electric field distribution was improved. As EVA mixed into the bulks acts as nucleation in crystallization process of HDPE, the size of spherulites became decreased and finally formed continuous network structure. Ultimately it resulted from extinction of space charge in the interfacial region of spherulites.
